YN Editorial: Patiently Waiting

“Kidnap the President’s wife without a plan”—Nasir Jones

There’s another Jay in my life. Electronica. I call him Jay Elect. Don’t know how it started. Don’t know how it will end. Wait, I know the origin. Twitter. Dude was a beast on that thing. He entertained me with his antics. Even had a baby on that muthafucka. True story. The social networking Gods would often banish him for tweetin’ too much. And he would email me to relay his messages to the masses. I didn’t even know the nigga like that? But I obliged.

Name keep poppin’ up. Just Blaze co-signed him awhile back but I never fully paid attention. Wasn’t my cup of tea. Or so I thought. “Abracadabra”? Love the Steve Miller joint. A tribute to Esco? Um, that’s rich. And what the hell is “Dimethyltriptamine” anyways? “Exhibit A” almost roped me in. But is it called “Transformations”? Who’s makes rap records for Guitar Center? Confused like Young Buck.

Then luck struck. Or the mighty hand of Mr. Smith who on Tony Toca’s show last fall let loose a portion of a song that would become “Exhibit C”. A game changer. From cult following to national recognition. Instant classic. So good. You should and you will PAY for it. Play it over and over and over again. Watch him perform the second verse acapella. Flip cam him. Flip cam him again. The only one who didn’t like it worked for me. Ha! Shit, Russell Rush’s still rollin’ with it.

But now, what’s a bro to do? How’d you follow that up? And should you? Act II talk came and went. No one held a grudge. As far as I know, the lyrical dynamo is still unsigned post the mysterious Decon project. Does he even want a record deal? My homie Ms. Yee is handlin’ some of his biz so I know things are most likely in the works but like you guys I’m fiendin’ to know what’s next? But really, is it worth the risk? I’m scared and I’m nervous.

One song. It can change everything. Ask Lloyd Banks who was irrelevant til he got his car song on. Like the other Jay often does, Elect’s mastered his moment. And by not doin’ anything else has sustained it. You’re only as good as your last record. Stakes is high. You love Nas. Well now you are our savior. Save us. Hip-hop’s not dead—if we still believe. We got you. Do you got us?

No fluke. We want future. A hero ain’t nothin’ but a Subway sandwich but you’ve managed to tug on our heartstrings, no homo. Made us love the culture again. You must fulfill promise. So take your time and do it right. You better do it right. Tonight, I heard you’re gonna be a guest at the N.E.R.D. show? We all know what song you’re gonna do. But none of us know what you’re gonna do next. You included. Good luck, friend.

Cool article and all… Like what you had to say. But damn that sounds so suspect fam..

    ————————-

You fruity as hell, Yellow Niglet.

  3. yez says:

That’s the sort of editorial we want. Reminds me of the good ol’ stuff.. The Source. ah! That M.I.A joint was totally off! Much love to you, YN.

  4. Sheeba says:

I new you fucks would get your anti-homo campaign on in the comments. Oh well.
Just Blaze worked with Saigon and that nigga’s career got derailed. Hopefully he doesn’t allow the same shit to happen to Jay E.

  5. mistah_zee says:

It was once an album to follow up but now it’s just one song. Better got hits in the volt before you release fire or you will have a hard time living up to 5 mins of music.

  6. gt says:

Stop hating this a good article and YN is sexy

  7. bigfamily says:

I’m glad your writing more than hate scribes.

  8. Philly says:

Y’all are a bunch of lames if that’s the ONLY thing you got outta’ this post. Bunch of homophobes around here….

I dug the post, and I seriously look forward to what Mr Electronica has in store for us.

  9. P says:

I was thinking the same. I searched for dudes mixtapes but everything sounds incomplete and unmastered. He’s nice from what i’ve heard though but I can’t sit there and vibe with a track that I could barely hear or that’s only a minute long.

  10. Ac@pella! says:

Mannnn, I like this cat, but at the same time fuck this Michael Petrius lookin ass migga if he’s gonna possibly one hit wonder himself. There’s 2 sides to this shit: I understand good artists, especially new ones, that see the industry as basically shit, and they don’t wanna succomb to it, so they choose not to oversatute themselves in the market to “keep it real” with themselves. Cool. On the other and, in this game, u gotta strike when the iron’s hot. Niggaz’ attention spans ain’t that long in this day and age. We as fans r greedy. If u feed us a sample of good music, we want u to keep feeding us. And we expect nothin less than pan seared chicken cordon bleu. Keep the microwave shit 4 the fickle young ass fans. There are many new artists with “hits” out there. Some put out what they want and some put out what they can. This nigga’s doin this shit by choice which imo is wack. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one sick of Exhibit C. I don’t give a fuck how dope and classic it is. My point is, put out sum new classic material more than u have. Shit, drop an 8 song sampler or somethin! Erykah can’t take of those seeds alone…

  11. Lol at comments that point out supposed homosexual wordplay.

Are we really that insecure with our masculinity now? Do you also point out cats that sag their pants and have their asses showing? Or men with braided hair? Or how about grown ass men with straightened hair and/or doo-rags? Is that also “fruity?”

YN is using hyperbole. Damn! I get really suspect about cats that constantly look for homosexual connotations. I don’t really see how one’s mind can go there if he’s completely comfortable with your manhood.

Anyway, dope editorial. Not sure if Jay or anyone in his position can meet those sorts of expectations.

  12. So Icy Boi! says:

    haha@ Michael Petrius

  13. DGtheEnigma says:

    To YN,

I’m a frequent person to visit you site. I find it to be better than your competitors in that for the most part, commenters stick to whatever post is the topic at hand. Unlike that (in)famous blog where out-of-school 18 year olds have way too much time on their hands and discuss a bunch of nothingness for the majority of the day.

To my point, EVERY editorial finds some way to directly or indirectly mention Jay-Z. Look, we get it. You believe that Jay-Z has single-handedly kept hip-hop relevant since 1996. Understandable. It’s your site. Your opinion. But lately, it’s gotten out of hand. “Name keep poppin’ up”, “Another Jay in my life”, “Like the other Jay…mastering the moment”.

In my humble opinion, you might want to consider taking your good friend Funk Flex’s cue and at least admit that you are Jay-Z’s number one fan unequivocally. If a man helped me get my start, I’d be loyal too, but you run a hip-hop and much more. You have a responsibility to keep the culture progressing. Not stagnant.

“We want future…” You damn right! So leave the stanning to Roc Nation.

    Respectfully,

    Loyal Rap Radar visitor

  14. koa29 says:

I liked the past editorials, but this & the guru one seem really terribly written. Half written ideas, etc… make it sound more readable YN…

  15. B.Dot says:

you have a responsibility to keep the culture progressing. Not stagnant.

    ^
how is YN making anything stagnant?

  16. mikey says:

Make one on eminem after his single is released

  17. J. Pitts says:

I am surprised that YN didn’t mention or just straight up hasn’t heard The Pledge (Eternal Sunshine).

Straight up one of the best songs of the past decade hands down. It’s so fucking epic.

  18. DGtheEnigma says:

In my opinion, in YN’s mind, everything in hip-hop must relate or go through or come back to Jay-Z in some way shape or form.

Post about Game? Jay’s mentioned. Post about Jay Elect? Jay’s mentioned. Point being, to what benefit is it to always stan for Jay?

The other day, YN called the BP3 a classic…that’s right, classic. And no sooner than 30 minutes later almost the entire comments section disputed that. Does that make YN out of touch? Or does that mean he’s stagnant? Nothing in hip-hop in right, unless it’s Jay-Z.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s his opinion. But as someone who openly admits that YN means alot to the culture, it would be nice to see him move with it. That is all.

  19. King JuggaNott says:

New Orleans Stand up…..Nigga came a long way from the LD (Last Driveway) of the Magnolia Projects!! Glad he’s showing that we have lyricist down here. Cash Money casts a huge shadow down here and It’s hard for cats to get get heard on some lyrical shit down here. Too bad he had to leave the crib to get shine but fuck…by any means my nicca. I’m fucking proud of you even though niccas down here don’t even know who the fuck you are. I listen to the radio and imagine how crazy it is that they don’t even mention dude…..anyways….keep doing ya fucking thing. Pretty soon they will start to recognize.

Throw ya’ fucking U up nicca we in the fucking building!!!

  20. yaboitone says:

I’m one of the BIGGEST haters of the whole “everything is gay” movement, but NOT to the point that i ignore shit that IS gay? lmao. “i have another jay in my life.” if he proofread it, he knew it looked suspect but convinced himself everything was cool and posted it anyway. lol. Im SURE the guy isn’t gay for jay-z. he just has a mancrush. lol. anyway back to topic,

not feelin this kat. how long ago was that damn song that everybody (except me, guess imma hater) fell in love with? i think ANYbody off of the streets who cares about hip hop and pays attention can find it in themselves to write ONE “so called” classic song (if they REEEALLY tried) in their lifetimes. real talk. Can’t help but to believe this dude is a flake who got lucky. That whole “i dont wanna saturate the game” shit is a bogus excuse. Difference between new mixtape everyday and keeping the masses fed.

if u DON’T keep em comin, u CANT keep em comin.

  21. MiloD says:

this might the realest blog in hip hop with real writers not some mto

  22. Frontrunner says:

    Good post..YN’s Rap RAdar editorials>>>>YN’s XXL edits…..
I myself have doubts that J can follow up with a consistently quality effort in the form of a mixtape or CD….but I can hope as you do…

  23. DARKAQUA says:

TILL I SEE ANY DIFFERENT…I’LL KEEP USING MY RESPONSE FROM THE PREVIOUS POST ABOUT JAY ELECT…WANNA HEAR IT, HEAR IT GO:

“WHATEVER…DUDE DON’T WANT IT…HE GETS CLOSE, THEN RUNS

ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT WHAT HE GOING TO DO OR WHAT’S IN THE WORKS

    NAW…HE DOESN’T WANT SUCCESS…TOO MUCH PRESSURE

    ….AND HE’S DOWNGRADE FROM COMMON…WORD!!!”

  24. Gordon B. says:

I like Jey Electronica, he obviously is a talented guy but he’s also very weird and I wouldn’t be surprised if he never released an album.

  25. Black McJagger says:

I’m young. only 21 so I was raised in a different Era of Hip Hop. Outkast and post Biggie Bad Boy Era,The Jay Z Blueprint Roc-A-Fella Era. Marshal Mathers LP dropped when I was in 6th grade, first album I ever bought. The College Dropout was released when I was a freshman in high school
and although I do own the classics and honor those who came before me these were the times and the artist that FIRST made me fall in love with Hip Hop. I remember when I first heard Kanyes’ album and the experience I had sitting in my room as track after track played…I pretty much found myself in that experience and for the first time in my life was given a dream….and now when I hear VOODOO MAN OR MY WORLD OR EXHIBIT A I get that same feeling again…i’m falling in love with Hip Hop and music in general all over again….I don’t know what the hold up is exactly or even if there is one…we don’t know if he’s working hard trying to put out the perfect album or even if he wants an album lol and thats whats frustrating…we just don’t know…you hear about all these different projects DECON, JAY+MOS ALBUM, JAY+NAS ALBUM, JAY+MOS+CURRENCY ALBUM, ACT 2 THE MIXTAPE, ACT 3 THE ALBUM, its just so much random information…its like the guy is working on 20 things at once or is he? WE DON’T FUCKING KNOW! lmao and thats the problem…Jay man if your listening WE ARE READY SIR…WE ARE WAITING YOU DID IT MAN..YOU’VE GOT OUR ATTENTION…THIS IS IT…WE FEEL LIKE WE ARE WITNESSING SOMETHING GREAT MAN….THE HIP HOP HEADS FEEL YOUNG AGAIN…MY GENERATION WASN’T THERE WHEN ILLMATIC DROPPED OR FOR MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS THIS IS IT FOR US..YOU ARE THAT MOMENT FOR US MAN AND WE ALL WANT TO BE APART OF IT WITH U…SO WE CAN SAY I WAS THERE 😉

  26. So Icy Boi! says:

^ you must be a NY eastcoast nigga 21 listening to dis type of music

  27. Thomas says:

Another good drop. I want some music from Jay Elec and believe he shouldn’t rush anything, but all of this myserty, drop two new songs every three years isn’t going to help him.

It’s like in the early 90’s I kept hearing about Lloyd Daniels being the best basketball player we’ve never seen/heard of (word to Jerry Tarkanian) but once he got to the league he flopped and didn’t last long. I hope Jay Elec isn’t Lloyd Daniels.

  28. Black McJagger says:

    @ So Icy

i’m actually from the south dog lol..born in New Orleans raised in ATL
who new ppl from the south don’t just dance

  29. Oj Da Cornball says:

    YN, YN
You really think this dude is/was gonna save hip hop?
    lol

Llyod Banks BBB is bigger than Exhibit C was and he won’t save hip hop.
People always ask “who’s the new guy” when unfamiliar face steps in the room. New guy’s not necessarily the center of attention. It’s just curiosity.

Your new Jay is back into irrelevant corner. That’s all Jay Elect was with that song.

  30. B.Dot says:

The other day, YN called the BP3 a classic…that’s right, classic. And no sooner than 30 minutes later almost the entire comments section disputed that. Does that make YN out of touch? Or does that mean he’s stagnant? Nothing in hip-hop in right, unless it’s Jay-Z.
    ^
ur using stagnant in the wrong sense. the album has spawned a classic song: empire state and has other notable good records. in due time, perhaps every1 will call it that. So what if YN refrences jay in a piece. big deal. alot of what he says has become part of the vernacular

  31. King JuggaNott says:

It’s interesting how guys are knocking artists that “calculate” there moves and release quality, even if it is a track here or there. Then turn around and complain about guys like Gucci Mane who releases mixtape after mixtape, albums to bring in the mixtape and a mixtape while the album is out the whole time the shit is trash.

Just respect the music for what it is…..I mean I can respect the fact that he is NOT like the bum ass new jacks who put out freestyles after freestyle in an attempt to satisfy the confused ass hip hop fans who wouldn’t know a classic if it hit them over the head.

I’d rather him take his time and put out quality songs, unlike the guys who flood the market with garbage.

  32. CaniBlog? says:

Who gives a fuck how YN decides to write, if yall dont like his articles stop fuckin reading them!

This ain’t the only Hip Hop blog around dumb fucks.

Yall way too sensitive REAL TALK.

  33. MiloD says:

so icy your ignorant go back to this is 50

  34. DGtheEnigma says:

B.Dot, c’mon that’s a bit of a reach. And a small part of me feels you even may agree. True, part of what Jay says/does becomes part of the culture. That’s still no justification for mentioning Jay by name in just about every YN editorial (which was the most refreshing thing in hip-hop blogs in two years I might add).

As far as BP3, one song and “other notable good records” doesn’t equal classic. Typically, when an album is considered a classic, the masses agree somewhat immediately, and then with time it’s proven. Outside of Empire State of Mind, not sure any record will played off BP3 let’s say 5-10 years from now (hence the reason why most won’t consider it a classic. Hell, it barely has replay value and it hasn’t even been a full year!

No need to debate. As I mentioned earlier, I would be loyal to who puts me in a position to win to. And I expect you to do the same with YN. In case you haven’t (or don’t care to notice), I’m simply saying that every artist does not have to be and should not be compared to Jay.

Part of what’s making these editorials so great is the fact that they’ve been about artists/topics that otherwise wouldn’t get mentioned. Don’t ruin that by constantly bringing up Jay. And that’s what I mean by stagnant.

Stagnant – characterized by lack of development, advancement, or progressive movement.

    I’m not the young’ns…

  35. DGtheEnigma says:

And for the record…B.Dot, you should write editorials as well. Honestly, I’m sure these editorials have been great for business. I respect ya’ll hustle at Rap Radar and I’d rather see this site then any other, so fuck that, I’m keep coming back!

Plus ya’ll get Shady’s shit first. Ha! (Shouts to YN)

  36. Oj Da Cornball says:

    B. Dot, stop using ^. lol
it’s getting confusing cause people are responding faster than you. Type or copy and paste the post name. you lazy bump

  38. teejay says:

So i know nothing about jay electronica, just downloaded exhibit c from itunes and loved it. What else should i get?

Also where can i find the exhibit a remix with mos def? does a studio one exist? and is there an exhibit b? sorry for being retarded

  39. King JuggaNott says:

Make an account and enjoy bruh…..that’s your gem for the day. LOL

  40. modh1n1 says:

seriously, take some writing classes yn or something. your style’s ok for blurbs, but your long form writing is shit. step the game up please.

  41. Post no billz says:

I liked exhibit c i thought i was dope.. I jus dont know why everybody went all bat shit for this record,so many simular songs went unoticed before it.. And jus cus a few hip hop big wigs say its hot.. People dick rode this record.. Its a suprise they didnt try captolize off this shit.. No remix no video nothin..

  42. teejay says:

    @king jugganott

    thanks man

  43. CantGetRight says:

I fux wit Jay Elect. He a good dude. I wonder how hes feels about Mac tho. Dude truly was the Nas of the South. Its crazy how ppl in da N.O. sleep on the likes of Jay E.,Mac,k.gates bt giv wayne props

  44. The Truth says:

Jay elect reminds me of jay z right before reasonable doubt dropped.
with the feeling of “i cant get wit that” and dead presidents 1

    shit feels like deja vu

would be amazing if jay cole, jay z and jay elect did a song.

    Triple J

  45. thomas says:

I think Jay Elec is gonna do fine, I also think a lot of people are I guess making their voices heard that there is pressure on him. I think Jay Elec is gonna do what he does regardless. We don’t worry about the sun shining, it just does. “Do you ask an eagle how it flies?” ~Exhibit A

    Hip-Hop is alive and well!

  46. Cory says:

YN mentions Jay a lot. Alright. I guess that means YN likes Jay-Z.

I don’t give a fuck. This is a good editorial.

  47. […] something today. I wanted to get hyped, but I’ve always been skeptical of Jay, and with YN’s last editorial about Jay still resonating in my psyche, I wasn’t bugging out. Well, it looks like Rap Radar got to […]
