DJ Carnage comes through with some footage of Kanye in Hawaii working on a beat for his tentatively titled album, Good Ass Job. Can anyone name that tune?

UPDATE: Commenter 106th pointed out that it’s a sample from the Broadway musical, Wicked.

  2. 106th says:

omg, “popular” from Wicked (the Broadway show) lmaooo… only kanye, ONLY kanye… most rappers prob haven’t even BEEN to a Broadway show

  3. Jaska. says:

That sounds like “Popular” from Wicked.

  4. 106th says:

i hope kristin chenoweth gettin a check for this sample if the song makes it on the album, lol

  5. Jaewon says:

Yeah, 106th is right. That is crazy…Kanye must have heard something special in his head to thinking of sampling that!

  6. B.Dot says:

i hope kristin chenoweth gettin a check for this sample if the song makes it on the album, lol
    ^
really? i aint gon front, u hate broadway.

  7. bgunn says:

    @word!!!

i guess u heard Good Ass Job, right? not your retarded.
and why do u always have to bring EM into everything?

  8. carter says:

@word get ur lips off of eminems butthole

  9. Thank Me Hater says:

One of the greatest rap producers of our time….mos def

  10. Haha says:

No need to compare albums, but I do think the two best albums this year will be How I Got Over and A Good Ass Job.

  11. carter says:

I’m excited for this album, yeezy’s a beast

  12. Haha says:

And to quote Jay-Z… “… the genius that is Kanye West…”

  13. 106th says:

@ B.Dot weill yeah, i mean IF the version he’s sampling is her vocals from the show… she should get some kinda commission right? idk how all that works… but i do know that kanye is bonkers (in the best way possible) for even thinking of this sample…

don’t yall get it – how many people who LOVE broadway and/or Wicked and normally wouldn’t care about Kanye or his album will now be interested in this song and/or album… he’s always bridged that gap, walked that line… between urban and pop… in a more accessible way than his big brother jay always did…

dont yall see that is the KEY to a successful AND still respected mainstream rapper… being able to walk the thin line between staying good with the rap fans and urban crowd, and appeasing pop radio and white girls and gays who buy albums, lol

  14. 106th says:

i’m sorry but in 2010 the truth of the matter is, even the biggest hip-hop fans, and that particular rapper’s biggest stans, will still just DL the album for free, lol

they gotta get creative to loop people who still BUYING albums – girls and gays

  15. 106th says:

PLUS it doesn’t hurt that Kristin Chenoweth’s NORMAL singing voice already SOUNDS like a sped-up soul sample, lmaoooo

  16. LATraffic says:

    @106th and Jaewon

    Cosign

Thats a crazy sample. But on some real shit though I went to see Wicked when it was in LA. Shit was ill and Im not really into Broadway.

  17. 106th says:

    @ LATraffic

yeah, i mean i’m not a HUGE broadway fan, but the shows i have seen have been dope – i just saw FELA! a few months ago and it was frekin amazing… i laughed, bopped my head, and yes, i teared up at the end… (YES, HOMO) LMAO!!!!!

  18. 106th says:

and to hip-hop fans who are gonna hate on broadway or that he sampled a broadway showtune, please grow up… u dont like when non hip-hop fans disregard hip-hop as a fad or not music… u want them to understand the culture and music… but if you in turn hating on something as American and time-honored as Broadway… then u are doing the same exact shit by not opening ur mind to be cultured..

there IS a world beyond hip-hop and the internet, lol – and it’s amazing

  19. Black McJagger says:

Only Yeezy would tackle Broadway…honestly who else can
    can’t wait for this album

  20. .... says:

    Kanye’s Production > Dr. Dre

  21. Donn says:

Honestly ppl dnt realize some of their favorite hardcore rappers use samples from broadway, country music, show tunes, etc. And sometimes these rappers rap over stuff they don’t even know where the beats and sounds come from cus now adays they dont’ care.
And yea, plz stop bring up Em and Drake in every post, honestly, shit is annoying, we understand ur closet fans, now chill
Good Ass Job on the way :D

  22. Ac@pella! says:

A artist by the name of Trademark used this same beat produced by Scoop.
It’s on youtube. Kanye jacking ideas?

  29. Joshua says:

His name is Trademark Experience If kanye uses this he might get sued

  30. Ac@pella! says:

    @Joshua

Maybe they jus thought of both using it without knowing. He doesn’t necessarily have to steal the idea. If it was the same exact beat, then yeah, that’s a problem, but sum of the same samples have been flipped using the same parts numerous times…anyways, GAJ is gonna bring hip hop back to where it needs to be. Little do ppl know, hip hop NEEDS Kanye. Look how wack and dry its been since we haven’t had him. That’s cool tho. It gives him room to come back and kill the game like he does every other year…

  31. Joshua says:

@ Ac@pella when you go to the youtube link for song wicked you will see the guys name.
Listen to his song he did in 2008

It has to be nerve racking trying to create with all those vultures just staring at you like a freak show exhibit.

As far a the broadway stuff, Ye is walking in the footprints of his predecessors; 45 King, Premo, Large Professor, Just, Q Tip, Salam Remi, Rza, Rockwilder, Ski Beatz, the list goes on and on. Ye is keeping this hip hop production shit moving.

The MPC coupled with the ASR 10?

I see I said, say no more. (c)
