Kanye West Working On Album Footage

DJ Carnage comes through with some footage of Kanye in Hawaii working on a beat for his tentatively titled album, Good Ass Job. Can anyone name that tune?

UPDATE: Commenter 106th pointed out that it’s a sample from the Broadway musical, Wicked.

    omg, “popular” from Wicked (the Broadway show) lmaooo… only kanye, ONLY kanye… most rappers prob haven’t even BEEN to a Broadway show

  3. Jaska. says:

    That sounds like “Popular” from Wicked.

  4. 106th says:

    i hope kristin chenoweth gettin a check for this sample if the song makes it on the album, lol

  5. Jaewon says:

    Yeah, 106th is right. That is crazy…Kanye must have heard something special in his head to thinking of sampling that!

  6. B.Dot says:

    i hope kristin chenoweth gettin a check for this sample if the song makes it on the album, lol
    ^
    really? i aint gon front, u hate broadway.

  7. bgunn says:

    @word!!!

    i guess u heard Good Ass Job, right? not your retarded.
    and why do u always have to bring EM into everything?

  10. Haha says:

    No need to compare albums, but I do think the two best albums this year will be How I Got Over and A Good Ass Job.

  11. carter says:

    I’m excited for this album, yeezy’s a beast

  12. Haha says:

    And to quote Jay-Z… “… the genius that is Kanye West…”

  13. 106th says:

    @ B.Dot weill yeah, i mean IF the version he’s sampling is her vocals from the show… she should get some kinda commission right? idk how all that works… but i do know that kanye is bonkers (in the best way possible) for even thinking of this sample…

    don’t yall get it – how many people who LOVE broadway and/or Wicked and normally wouldn’t care about Kanye or his album will now be interested in this song and/or album… he’s always bridged that gap, walked that line… between urban and pop… in a more accessible way than his big brother jay always did…

    dont yall see that is the KEY to a successful AND still respected mainstream rapper… being able to walk the thin line between staying good with the rap fans and urban crowd, and appeasing pop radio and white girls and gays who buy albums, lol

  14. 106th says:

    i’m sorry but in 2010 the truth of the matter is, even the biggest hip-hop fans, and that particular rapper’s biggest stans, will still just DL the album for free, lol

    they gotta get creative to loop people who still BUYING albums – girls and gays

  15. 106th says:

    PLUS it doesn’t hurt that Kristin Chenoweth’s NORMAL singing voice already SOUNDS like a sped-up soul sample, lmaoooo

  16. LATraffic says:

    @106th and Jaewon

    Thats a crazy sample. But on some real shit though I went to see Wicked when it was in LA. Shit was ill and Im not really into Broadway.

  17. 106th says:

    @ LATraffic

    yeah, i mean i’m not a HUGE broadway fan, but the shows i have seen have been dope – i just saw FELA! a few months ago and it was frekin amazing… i laughed, bopped my head, and yes, i teared up at the end… (YES, HOMO) LMAO!!!!!

  18. 106th says:

    and to hip-hop fans who are gonna hate on broadway or that he sampled a broadway showtune, please grow up… u dont like when non hip-hop fans disregard hip-hop as a fad or not music… u want them to understand the culture and music… but if you in turn hating on something as American and time-honored as Broadway… then u are doing the same exact shit by not opening ur mind to be cultured..

    there IS a world beyond hip-hop and the internet, lol – and it’s amazing

  19. Black McJagger says:

    And yea, plz stop bring up Em and Drake in every post, honestly, shit is annoying, we understand ur closet fans, now chill
    Good Ass Job on the way 😀

    It’s on youtube. Kanye jacking ideas?

  29. Joshua says:

    His name is Trademark Experience If kanye uses this he might get sued

  30. Ac@pella! says:

    @Joshua

    Maybe they jus thought of both using it without knowing. He doesn’t necessarily have to steal the idea. If it was the same exact beat, then yeah, that’s a problem, but sum of the same samples have been flipped using the same parts numerous times…anyways, GAJ is gonna bring hip hop back to where it needs to be. Little do ppl know, hip hop NEEDS Kanye. Look how wack and dry its been since we haven’t had him. That’s cool tho. It gives him room to come back and kill the game like he does every other year…

  31. Joshua says:

    @ Ac@pella when you go to the youtube link for song wicked you will see the guys name.

    I’ve heard that TradeMark song and it’s ok.Knowing Kanye West I doubt his version of the sample will sound anything like that especially based on that last loop we heard in the video.I think everyone should just wait till we have the full song before we compare anything.

    @eminem4ever.
    Lyrically Recovery>Good Ass Job
    Creativity, Production, Originality, Playabality, >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Recovery

    I’m still have College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation and 808’s on rotation. CLASSICS!!!

    Recovery is going to be like Paper Trail for me it’s good lyrically and the songs are good but they’re all going to get annoying because they’re ALL radio singles.

  59. Ultrakid says:

    So basically it’s Good Ass Job>Recovery

    Cause we all know Kanye brings them classics. I’m all for originality not some catchy Pop singles with Rihann or Pink! that I’ll be annoyed by in a few months or even weeks.

  60. Billy Rae Valentine says:

    yo. i notice u guys think it’s cool to snitch on where artists sample records from.

    don’t u remember Preemo talking abt this on Moment Of Truth? ha

  61. Foots says:

    Oh no, Em must be one of the greatest cuz I swear yall compare him to EVERY rapper, not matter who the dude is. All I see is “Em>>Drake/Kanye/Soulja/Waka Flocka” WAKA FLOCKA??!! You guys actually compare him to Waka.

    @Ultrakid
    Wasnt Graduation filled to the brim with radio singles?? Dope album yet, but maybe you forgot that about 8 of the songs on there were on the radio constantly. Catchy pop singles, Stronger was very Pop-ish (it sampled a pop song) amongst other songs of Kanyes I dont feel like bringing up. Dont start being bias now, cuz you normally say some smart shit.

  62. […] Not enough footage to get too excited but still worth the watch; Kanye studio footage >. Sounds like he was getting ready to use the same drums briefly as he did in this clip but he’s sampling Broadway musical, Wicked. This footage is courtesy of DJ Carnage, filmed in Hawaii. via B.Dot […]

RAP ALBUM OF THE YEAR IS GONNA SPAWN HEATED DEBATES. ITS GONNA COME DOWN TO KANYE AND EM CUZ THEY ALWAYS WIN IT ANYWAY.

    EM – 4 WINS (FIRST 3, RELAPSE)
    KANYE – 3 WINS (FIRST 3 ALBUMS)

    BLOGGERS GET READY!

  64. Ultrakid says:

    @Foots.

    Stronger sampled a House track plus Gradution didn’t have catchy little tunes with Rihanna or something like that and Gradution wasn’t so Pop that you would get annoyed by it. Everything on Graduation was balanced but honestly I’m not dissing Recovery because I compared it to Paper Trail which was an album I enjoyed it but an album like that doesn’t bring anything new to the game Kanye always brings something new to the game and just when I thought what else is there to do Kanye releases Power which had an awesome tribal sound mixed with cool Electro synths and the best lyrics he’s ever rapped. Plus Kanye also brought Premo, Pete Rock, and Q-Tip on his album so this is obviously a GUARANTEED classic.

  65. Billy Rae Valentine says:

    also, i don’t think it’s sooooo crazy that he sampled a Broadway musical. all this “only kanye” stuff is not really warranted. honestly, at this point, why wouldn’t you as any producer use virtually ANY sound on earth to make a beat? in the digital age ANY sound is an option. who is still NOT thinking like that in an age where Danger Mouse deconstructs the tiniest parts of Beatles records and makes a jay-z mash-up, or makes a beat whose main element is just vocals?

    like, is this Really That outside the box? i guess for a lot of people this is insane or something even tho ppl pointed out 45 King sampling Annie for Jay-Z and other examples. meanwhile hip-hop shits on Timbaland hard as hell because he has a natural R&B and Pop style instead of hard-core hip-hop. but he’s made 10 times as many beats as Kanye, and he samples waaaay crazier shit than a musical! and makes sick-ass beats. i mean come on T.I. reported that the guy literally took a cup full of pens and shook them and put it in a beat! he used a fucking baby crying, a sound effect of a monster roaring in a cartoon, children talking, and the list goes on. oh, but he makes pop so fuck him. and kanye’s a genius because he didn’t just sample urban music.

  66. Interscope Employee says:

    Shit sounds hot!

    still fuck Kanye for not doing beats for J.Cole lol. Shout out to his mentor NO ID though!

  67. Ultrakid says:

    @Billy Rae Valentine,
    Timbaland fell off big time. He was a beast but now he’s meh.

    @Interscope Employee,
    J. Cole din’t ask Kanye for a beat my dude.

  68. Foots says:

    @Ultrakid

    Stronger sampled that song by Daft Punk “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” very Poppish. And I know your not dissing Recovery, but having one song with Rihanna doesnt make the album anymore more Pop-ish then Graduation was. And the Pink track had more Rock to it than Pop. And im not saying Kanye doesnt bring new stuff to the table, but its easy to twist around a sample from every genre for every track to make things seem unique. And 808s, what genre would that even be? Paper Trail was a classic IMO by the way, and so is Recovery IMO. And get it twisted, im sure Good ass Job is gonna be classic too, cuz aside from 808s, he always puts out a classic.

    Please Kanye fans (not gonna say stans) Dont attack me cuz I dont think Kanye is as great as you think, I think hes pretty good ok? Dont kill me. But tell me some original beats Kanye produced, with no sample. Not tryna be a smart ass, but really tell me…cuz i dont know any.

  69. Ultrakid says:

    @Foots,
    808’s was synth Pop and I can name a few Kanye track with no samples and there’s also alot of songs where Kanye made the beat but he would add a vocal beat so I guess that counts too soo….

    Thanks, gotta check that list out to see if its still top-notch production on Kanyes Part. I love that Show me a Good time beat though

  71. Ultrakid says:

    @Foots,
    A classic album will set trend and will influence others and Recovery and Paper Trail sound like any other Hip Hop album that came out and that’s cool and all but I’m looking that originality and the album that’ll start trends and have the whole world praising it so that’s when Kanye comes in. Em maybe a better rapper but Kanye is a better artist in general infact he’s the artist of our generation.

    It goes…
    Kanye: Best male artist of our generation
    M.I.A.: Best female artist of our generation
    N.E.R.D. & The Roots: Best bands of our generation

  72. Foots says:

    Side note, is there an official cover for Good Ass Job? Cuz im looking at one on Wikipedia, but I dunno if its official cuz i havent seen any other sites post it yet

  73. Foots says:

    @Ultrakid

    Kid Cudis album was pretty original, no praise. B.o.Bs album was pretty original, besides being #1, no praise. Originality that starts trends, then it doesn’t become original anymore. Kanye is gonna use the same style on this album that influenced his other albums, know why? Because it works which i evidenced by his other albums success. Also, for his albums to be so original, they dont seem to spread much outside the U.S. Cuz people forget that there is a world outside the US, but I guess people think they dont know shit about music since they not over here witnessing everything that goes into it. But if your gonna call someone an artist, then he better have a fan-base outside of the US. Because music should span the continents, not just cities and states. I dont here much from Kanye from other countries.

  74. Spencep says:

    i agree with 106 and Donn.. you can’t hate on everything that comes up that is different from what you like.. alot of things will grow on you if you just give it a chance and I think people will learn one day that Kanye does not and will not stay in the box of normal thinking..

    and he is not crazy for using a sample from this play cuz ive seen Wicked in Philly and Chicago and it was dope both times.. I could care less about the Wizard of Oz and I still thought it was tight in how they portrayed the story.. Kristen can sing her ass off too.. Good sample and cant wait for the finished product

  75. So Icy Boi! says:

    Yall mutha fukaz in love wit Eminem …damn u gay azz fags …every post Eminem , Eminem, etc….. fuk him and the recovery

  76. yeah dey call me a camel says:

    Kanye still with that sexy ass broad Amber Rose…. i would to

  77. Ultrakid says:

    @Foots,
    Kanye brought Electro Hip Hop back with Graduation and that Electro sound influenced alot of the Pop songs we here today AROUND THE WORLD!!! Man on the Moon was praised and so was B.o.B.’s album but Man on the Moon didn’t sell well but Kanye is already one rap’s biggest stars so of course he’s going to sell and let’s face it all his albums are classics. Recovery so far has been getting bad reviews(Minus what the Em stans are saying) but Kanye you should expect a CLASSIC!!!! The dude is a musical genuis period. Plus I believe Kanye is big outside of the states too that’s why his albums were universally acclaimed plus Prince Harry or whatever said he jams to Kanye so who wins here.

    Plus Man on the Moon has a cult following and and B.o.B. was really that original.

  78. John says:

    Other than “Good Life”, Graduation was really a shot in the dark. Sampling “Daft Punk” was ballsy for a rap artist too do. I mean, people were hating on him cause his music was so ‘pop-ish’, but the thing is, at that time in Hip-Hop, ‘pop-ish’ wasn’t in. People were hating on “The Good Life” for the same reason, and because he was wearing the black levis (and than everybody started copping them). Graduation is like a pop classic, like Ultrakid says, a classic changes the game and starts trends, from that point on, almost every Hip-Hop track had a main synth beat followed by dope electro background. Ayo Technology, you think you’d hear 50 over a beat like that? Plus the style from his Graduation era, the glasses that people couldn’t even see out of.

    This video is DOOPPE, can’t wait for this album man, you guys don’t even know. Ye does have another classic on his hands, I know it. And SMH, stop bringing up Eminem, his album was dope as hell too, there both going too drop sick ass albums. Cop both and support good music =)!

  79. Enzo says:

    Fuck all ya’ll faggots. Drake’s sound is original. DOnt NO 1 sound slike him but you dont wanna give him no credit. Fuck outta here EAT A DICK

  80. PITRI says:

    @Ultra..Who gives a Fuck about Reviews?? Do you need anotha persons opinion to like somthin or not?? no RIght..it shouldint matter What ANY other person thinks you like what you like..

  81. Ultrakid says:

    @PITRI,
    A classic usually gets more praised than Recovery but honestly I’m still going to give the album a try—I’m not the type of person who goes and disses a whole album because some critics didn’t like it but a classic usually starts with glowing reviews and ends with glowing reviews. A classic won’t always sell well either(Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt is proof of that).

  82. PITRI says:

    IM not talkin about recovery..im just sayin in general..Why do you need others ppls opinions to call it a classic?? what if to you Good Ass job is A Classic and the Greatest album ever..and it doesent get those Glowing reviews..your going to let that change what you think??
