@Markoni you can’t really talk to Word but he’s right in a sense. I feel like this Recovery album does have substance. The only difference is he’s talking more about himself and HIS problems than what’s wrong with the rest of the world like he did on MMLP. He’s gettin really introspective on this one. And this is something he hasn’t done on past albums I feel.

He can’t even coexist meaningfully with a beat– every producer he works with seems to give him the most attenuated version of their signature sound possible and back away carefully. The liner notes will tell you that Recovery features production by Boi-1DA, Jim Jonsin, DJ Khalil, and Just Blaze along with the usual suspects Mr. Porter and Dre. But your ears will tell you it’s the same click track Em’s been rapping over since time immemorial– the only times the beats elbow to the fore are with DJ Khalil’s characteristically chunky and unwieldy rap-rock hybrids. Em just sort of drifts through these productions, as haunted and disembodied a presence as 2Pac on a posthumous release.
Em is nice on Ridaz but after hearing it I am SOOOOOOOO glad the entire album was not produced by Dre. Beat for Ridaz should have been saved for the new D12 album. Session one was tight…………cant wait to see if Slaughterhouse ends up on Shady. It would really change the game. This album is a classic!!

they really do know what they are talking about, even when it comes to hip hop. i agree em is better than pretty much any other rapper out there, and i think he got fucked in their review of recovery….BUT they are mainly considering the context in which his album is in (hip hop today, his age, what he has already proven to do in past albums, etc.)
and they dont always hate on em: they did not review MMLP but in later ones they said it deserves a 10.0 … also they reviewed ES and gave it a 9.1 (in the review the guy says it deserved a 10.0 as well…)…
but i get it, they dont really give a lot of specific examples and mainly just go on the overall effect of the album.. sometimes their reviews seem very biased… and they do mainly review indie/alternative obscure music so they dont have a lot of respect in the hip hop community….
BUT they dont just purely hate on em, in fact i think he just set the bar really high for himself…

On the other hand Recovery ain’t as dope as i thought it would be, but if reviews really mattered it definitely is better than a 2.8. Either way anyone that matters won’t be effected by this.
