Jay Rock Signs With Strange Music

[vodpod id=Video.4527204&w=425&h=350&fv=]

Strange tings are happening. Not too long ago, Jay Rock received his walking papers from Warner Bros. Records. But he didn’t stay on the market for too long. He reveals to XXL that he signed to Tech N9ne’s Strange Music imprint. He says:

Tech and Strange approached us once I became a free agent and we went to [Kansas City, MO] to see first-hand what we had been missing and saw why they’re the No. 1 independent rap label. The word had spread about me leaving Warner Bros. and I was getting offers left and right from majors wanting to sign me, but in the end, Dude Dawg and I had no doubts that Strange had the perfect situation for us

TRANSLATION: I REALIZED THAT I’M AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST, NOT A MAJOR LABEL BILLBOARD TOP 100 ARTIST THAT CAN SELLS ALOT OF RECORDS. THAT WHOLE “I WAS GETTING OFFERS FROM OTHER MAJORS” WAS JUST SOME LEVERAGE TALK

    ——-
and that means what? nonetheless your statement is so inaccurate.

  12. Mike B says:

Smart choice…He knew he wasnt gonna cross over so a major label wouldnt be the greatest oppurtunity finacially

  13. Dez says:

fuck being mainstream, unless your name is kanye, eminem, wayne, jay or drake then you’re not selling… that’s just how the game is these days, a rap artist would have to be stupid to not want to be independent these days, major labels can’t do shit for you that you can’t do yourself

Good luck touring Idaho, Utah, and Montana doing shows for trailer trash juggalos for the rest of his career…I went to see Slaughterhouse when they were opening up for Tech last year…suuuuuch a lame ass crowd of fans this guy has…my god…the game has to be REALLY slumping right now if somebody would go sign and resign themselves to that wack ass scene voluntarily

  16. Eyerone says:

    @bishop

a wack scene that actually pays for the music and supports artists…just sayin.

  17. Indiemuzik says:

@DallasTx_Greedy The only artists who “blow up” are untalened pop singers (Drake, Lil Wayne, etc..) who concede to major label pressure by watering down their music, so the labels will bribe the radio stations for airtime (people percieve ANY CRAP on commerical radio to be “good”).

@mac DIESEL First off, sales==talent! But since you’re interested in chart positions, all of Tech’s, Krizz Kaliko’s, and Brotha Lynch Hung’s albums on Strange have all cracked the top 100. Also they make most of their money off of touring (revenue for Strange Music last year was $15 million) and unlike being on a major, each artist gets a MINIMUM of 50% of everything (touring, publishing, album sales, etc..) while majors only get 3-7% (Strange is 1/5 the size of Cash Money Records…do the math).

@Bishop I’m not a juggalo and if you read the post you would know that I think Tech rules.

  18. mac DIESEL says:

    @ indiemuzkik

I DON’T CARE ABOUT CHART POSITIONS!!!! IT SEEMS U ARE THOU SINCE U SO THOROUGH WIT THE SHIT!!!! I WAS JUST TRANSLATIN’ WUT THAT NIGGA WAS SAYIN’!!!! AND THAT’S ABOUT IT!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!
