1st, Kanye’s album cover was not banned. 2nd, be for real. It is not hard to see why Nirvana cover would not be rejected by a retailer like WalMart, while they would balk at Ye’s. Actually, when Nirvana’s album originally came out the label slapped a sticker over the babys dick on the packaging, so you couldn’t see it on the store shelves.

The difference is that album came out almost 20 years ago. Into today’s music industry iTunes, Walmart and Best Buy sell the overwhelming majority of music in the US so if just one of those outlets refuses to sell your album for whatever reason it’s gonna have a major impact on your sells. I know Yezzy may not care about sales but I’m sure the good people over at Def Jam do. Back when Nirvana dropped “Nevermind” there were a lot more independent record stores so artist didn’t have compromise there art because one cooperation didn’t like it.
Times have changed when was Nirvanas CD released? Mid 90′s I’m sure I don’t even remember wal-mart being around back then. People start pulling out the race card too soon these days. That picture would be offensive to most anyway so walmart has to be politically correct. It really has nothing to do with whether you personally think the Nirvana or Kanye artwork is good or not the bottom line here(and Kanye’s main point) is retailers shouldn’t have an say in what artist do. If Def Jam or Universal Music Group as a whole would just stand up to Walmart or whoever and say “Ether you sell the album the way it is or we’ll pull all of our records from your store” they would back down. I understand that would never happen in a million years but the only way for artist to have any power in situations like this would be if the record label backs them up….which they won’t of course because it’s much easier to get Kanye to change his album cover.
