Rolling Stone Gives Kanye’s LP 5 Stars

Rolling Stone released their review this afternoon for Kanye’s new album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which leaked earlier today. The magazine praised Mr. West’s fifth LP with five stars. Below is an excerpt from the review:

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is his most maniacally inspired music yet, coasting on heroic levels of dementia, pimping on top of Mount Olympus. Yeezy goes for the grandeur of stadium rock, the all-devouring sonics of hip-hop, the erotic gloss of disco, and he goes for all of it, all the time. Nobody halfway sane could have made this album… on Fantasy, he gets ridiculously maximal, blowing past all the rules of hip-hop and pop, even though, for the past half-decade, he’s been the one inventing the rules.

It’s his best album, but it’s more than that – it’s also a rock-star manifesto for a downsizing world. At a time when we all get hectored about lowering our expectations, surrendering our attention spans, settling for less, West wants us to demand more.

  11. ctg says:

Since when do Rolling Stone reviews of hip-hop albums matter? There’s a long list of hip-hop classics that received bad reviews from them.

Not to say that they’re wrong about Yeezy’s album but their let’s not act like they’re credible when it comes to reviewing hip-hop.

  12. mnka says:

no one is credible when it comes to reviewing any music material – remember its one fuckin person doin the writing, let the masses judge it, anyways im sure its classic

  13. BEN10 says:

ONE OF THE BEST TO EVER DO IT ……SALUTE….. THEY CANT STOP U!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. dani says:

    GO KANYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! let ’em hate!

  15. Fuck Ya Life says:

    @mnka

    Co-sign.

But with that said hearing the clean shit was like a preview and all the track’s on there are dope. Look forward to getting the real shit on the 22nd.

  16. Joshua says:

@ Oscar you must be crazy. The blame game song is the shit. Chris Rock is funny then a motherfucka on there. THIS IS THE BEST RAP ALBUM OF ALL TIME. I DARE SOMEONE TO COMPARE ANOTHER ALBUM TO THIS ONCE THEY HEAR IT

  17. Quantummusik says:

its dope, not as good as his old stuff, but it has a sort of mature feel to it.

  18. Joshua says:

PEOPLE GO TO STR8GHTKRACK.COM TO DOWNLOAD THE ALBUM. I WILL BUY 3 COPIES WHEN THIS COMES OUT AND I DON’T EVEN BUY MUSIC. IF YOU HAVE A PAIR OF BEATS BY DRE STUDIOS YOU WILL LOVE HOW MUCH WORK KANYE PUT IN TO THIS ALBUM.

  19. Chris says:

One of the best albums I’ve ever heard. I’m 31 and have listened to a lot of shit. This is a masterpiece and something I will actually spend my money on.

  20. The Illest says:

Rolling Stone is one of the worst, when it comes to album reviews.

  21. Killa Shady says:

    I agree with @Oscar
this album seeemed rushed, forced, and too many collabos.
Kanye will never touch his 1st and 2nd albums.
btw, this sounds like an illuminati album.
    demons? weird cover? hmmmmm….

  22. AnuKiNSkywalker says:

Looking forward I’m copping the album just to suport even if I heard through leaks.

  23. JERZZZ says:

This album is garbage. Fuck outta here fruity dick riders of the world.

  24. Tim Lee VA Stand Up says:

Holy shit Ye’…..5 Stars??? Cant wait for this shit…….

  25. sideshowRaheem says:

Rolling Stone doesn’t hand out a lot of 5 star ratings especially for hip-hop albums. I believe the last one was for the Beastie Boys “To The 5 Boroughs” in 2005 and before that was Kanye’s “Late Registration” earlier that same year. I agree with their ratting as far as this goes “Graduation” was great but it had “Barry Bonds” and “The Glory” on it and although I like those songs they didn’t fit in with Yeezy’s overall sound for that record. “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” on the other hand is a lot more like “Late Registration” it’s filled with bangers, the songs all have and epic feel about them and they all fit together perfectly….no wasted tracks.

  26. teejay says:

…im on the first track. I have chills. This is ridiculous.

  27. HEX0 says:

    *hops on kanye’s dick*

  28. Donn says:

Thats hypocritical. If the masses choose the classics then Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, JayZ and Lil Wayne would be considered to have classics. Ppl only care when albums they liked get good ratings. If its someone you dont like you say the source isnt credible anymore. Its not one person writing. The views expressed reflect the opinions of the entire staff of Rolling Stone. A magazine that has been around for a long time. I say wat ratings they give are pretty credible to how the majority feel

  29. Belize says:

Wow. I don’t think the album will be that great but congrats I guess Kanye. I am lookin forward to it tho. Hope Banks sells a good amount.

  30. Tim Lee VA Stand Up says:

    @HEX0

    hahahahaha

    You Win.

  31. YoYo says:

Kanyes best album by FARRRR was late registration this new stuff sounds somber and dreary…I dont get the hype, do u love his personality or his music? which is it?

  32. ben says:

ye is a genuis, what else is new. he has 4 classics.

  33. […] since writing this, I’ve learned Rolling Stone gave Kanye’s album 5 stars out of 5 (props to Rap Radar).  That almost NEVER happens.  Maybe it will be all G.O.O.D. (now I feel […]

  34. Joshua says:

    @rondo go to piratebay,isohunt,kissasstorents

  35. slax says:

This shit is epic but it’s still 3rd behind CD and LR due to lyrics. Sound-wise it’s his best IMO

  36. You Kno Me says:

College Dropout, Late Registration, 808s & HeartBreaks, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Graduation

    ^^Kanye best Album order

  37. YaDig says:

  39. tr says:

You can tell Kanye cares about the quality of his work. MBDTF is a superior record to Graduation and 808s.

  43. Meanmug says:

this album is gonna be kanyes greatest yet!

  44. TRUTH! says:

Ye paid for this rating! $$ will get you 5 stars!

  45. Dope says:

i’m one to never buy into hypes but the anticipation for MBDTF is ridiculous after listening to BLAME GAME i’m convinced that this guy is a genious, Wiz or whatever label that will fit what would characterized this man’s ability to make great music. people don’t understand what we are witnessing right now and i feel sorry for them because when he’ll no longer be with us anymore that’s when the praises will start coming specially from Haters with that said i’m gonna need a link for that leak because i can no longer wait but make no mistake i will buy 2 copies to make up for it.

  46. PTownWa says:

Album is dope… I won’t label it a classic though, as much as people say a classic can only be defined by how well the album ages… the truth is a classic album is a classic when u listen to it and it’s all you can listen to nonstop!!! The Miseducation, Illmatic, LAD, The Chronic, etc… Ye used an interesting sonic approach to this album, I noticed traces of Indie, Funk/Soul, & even House music in the production… definitely dope although it’s different! The only bad marks the album gets are because half of the tracks leaked 2-3 months ago, and he used Autotune not throughout, but a lil too much

  47. Gusto says:

I’m looking forward to hearing this in the stu on the big ass speakers…. G

  48. wtflol says:

No…SERIOUSLY? I listened to it then left it alone. If anything Graduation is his best album ever and deserved 5 mics from The Source’s wack ass.

  49. steve says:

It’s a decent album. Graduation > College Dropout > Late Regitration > My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy > 808 & Heartbreak.

For me it’s all about the music. I wasn’t really into the heartbreak stuff… Graduation was sonically sound, i love that shit to death and still bump it a ton. College Dropout will be forever known as the classic that launched Kanye.

REAL TALK: my favorite Kanye track in awhile is Christian Dior Denim Flow, wasn’t even on this album. wtf?

  50. wonjosk says:

beats are so incredible and everything i have heard from the album is great.
theoretically it should be a classic.
but for some reason, i’m not replaying the tracks.
the music isn’t moving me like college dropout did.
i don’t know what it is exactly.
    someone please help me out..

  51. SERIOUSLY says:

BLAME GAME > SONG CRY and i’m a Jay-z fan

  52. The Chronic>Chronic 2001>All Dr. Dre Production is better than kanye's says:

KANYE WILL NEVER SURPASS THE PIONEER OF G-FUNK!!!!!!! No one is close to rival the Doc’s albums!

  53. Rap says:

@The Chronic>Chronic 2001>All Dr. Dre Production is better than kanye’s COSIGN To that!
Dr. Dre is THE GOAT of HIP-Hop

  56. Yooo says:

Fantastic album…. I’m thinkin though it may just be 1 great song off a classic

  57. Word says:

CD was Ye’s best album. I put this one down there with LR but right above 808s.

  58. dj saphir says:

@Rap: Preemo is a better producer than the doctor

  59. S_Dogg says:

This shit is fuckin’ insaaaaaaaaaneeeeeeee just been blazin’ it full volume FUCK MY HOUSEMATES with their faggot indie music, THIS IS MUSIC, one of the best albums I’ve EVER heard Hell of A Life is straight up crack and the production on ALL these tracks is ILLLLLLLYYY.

    P.S.

Fergie fuckin’ bodied All of The Lights, she got maddd talent!

  60. boston-morgan says:

Album is dope. Really different. Hell Of A Life is really dope. It’s hard to judge/rate a Kanye West album, they’re so different from everything else. I also think it’s hard to judge the album as a white person because Kanye always really puts that black soul feel into it. So who am I to judge that? The album is sick and is def gonna be gettin’ a lot of radio play from me. I love the piana after Ye’s last verse in Devil In A New Dress… a real cool thing to do as a producer. Adding Ricky Rozay to the track made my day, that’s my boy.

  61. killyou says:

    So far its so good.

  62. Zoomzoom says:

HAHA ITS CLEAR HE PAID THEM TO PROMOTE HIS SHIT THIS ALBUM SOUNDS LIKE 808S AND HEARTBREAKS PT.2

  72. ridalen says:

@PTownWa theres no autotune on the album…just because you alter your voice doesnt make it autotune

but its Far too soon to label it a classic. As overproduced as Late Registration was but not nearly as well done. Has the grittiness of the College Season but its not as good. I like it though…hes set the bar so high he basically competes with his old material. Only album I think its better than is 808s tho

  73. Q says:

Can’t take nothin away from that man. He makes dope joints. Always pushes the envelope. I wasn’t personally a fan of 808’s and all that autotune but I’m what most of y’all would call an old head (33 yrs old). But as 1 MC to another, I take my hat off to Kanye. I just wishhe would stop dickriding every cat out (Every week it’s “Beiber is the hottest ever” “Souljah boy is the savior of hip hop” “Waka is Jesus on the mic”.) Just stop that shit…

  74. Damn Homie says:

tired of every album supposedly being a “classic”. This album is good but its not a classic.. niggas need to calm down. When you hear a classic you know it..

when you hear.. 1..2…3.. and to the four..

when you hear.. when i was just a little baby boy my mama used to tell me these crazy things…

when you hear.. I been.. working this grave shift… and I ain’t made shit..

when you hear.. i’m out for presidents to represent me..

todays agenda.. got the suitcase up in the sentra..

those are some classics.. this is just a good album… production wise…

lyric wise.. its ok.. nothing groundbreaking.. no amazing content or wordplay.. yall think this is a classic for the same reason people think Boise State should be number 1… they don’t play nobody..

yall so over saturated with bad music when you hear descent shit now you lose your mind.. if Ye dropped this in a yr with better offerings.. it wouldn’t be shit.. this album doesn’t hold up to the test of time..

no one will be bumping this for years to come.. it will come…go.. and fade away.

plus.. -1000 points for most of the album being on the net for a few months now.

continue the Ye suck off fest.

    peace.

  75. villain says:

the album is straight up crack laced with heroin knocked back with metholated spirits and a bong

  76. Mokh says:

I respect so much this crazy guy!

  77. […] he’s gotta do something to remain relevant, so he brings up Kanye’s new album and the wonderful praise it’s received (which it deserves) and in doing so says he hopes to achieve that level of greatness. No really, he […]
