Jay Electronica Interview Feature

Jay Elect has a brief write up in the new edition of Interview. The entire feature and photo gallery is available here but below is a small excerpt.

“For me, my life is a journey. Nothing against Drake, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Kanye West, but they’re in a certain kind of machine that doesn’t afford them the freedom to do that.” He adds: “The greats have always been the people who gave you of themselves, as opposed to just giving you a product.”

jay electronica is my pick for the future of hip hop….. if there was a fantasy rap draft he would be the toad man’s first round draft pick…follow me on twitter @toad3527

  2. suppppppp says:

What a fuckin’ dumbass. Just another anti-mainstream bitter ass dickhead. nigga you underground cuz u don’t have appeal, now shut the fuck up nigga.
Kanye makes music he wants, and he makes better music than YOU. pussy ass bitch nigga. Does he honestly think labels r pushin Kanye to make different type of music?
this niga will never blow, believe that. Whether Jigga or whoever supports, he will not blow.

  3. Belize says:

Last part is true, but is he saying Kanye and Jeezy have no life? Sorry to burst your bubble nigga, but the cliche of life is a journey applies to EVERYONE pretty much, not just you. smh

  4. Rome says:

Wow. Thats an interesting point. He’s pretty much saying those other dudes can’t afford to not give a fuck. But he can.

I think he’s wrong about Kanye. Unless he knows some shit I don’t know about him, which is highly possible since he’s apart of industry and I’m not.
    @ The dude above.
Instead of going on a crazy rant, maybe you should just sit, and think about what he said. Stupid niggas are always quick to react.

  5. Nasser says:

this old nigga will never reach kanye level

  6. audioCzar says:

    “machine” = i_________

  7. was going to come in here defending kanye but i see thats been taken care of bc i really dont see kanye being an artsit that jusrt gives u a prodcut

  8. On the reals says:

I hope he can back this claim up, cuz if he can we win.

But so far I honestly haven’t heard him spit anything deeper or more ground breaking than a Kanye, Drake, or even a Rick Ross and Jeezy.

  9. SwallowMyNutz! says:

Fuck this CLOWN!!!Overated anyway!Eat a fat dick you racist motherfucker!

  10. mdot85 says:

@bdot is it me or is jay reachin a bit too much wit this expert seein as how kanye def jus gave us an epic album about his journey

  11. Belize says:

@Rome: Frankly, Jay should prolly give a fuck the most out of the other niggas he listed. Kanye just released a classic album. Drake’s prolly the hottest new artist out, unless you count Beeber kid. Ross…not doin bad. Jeezy had his time. But Jay just a newcomer who’s been too lazy to release something. He got a great flow all right, but lyrically, not so much. I understand Ye and them would let a lot of people down if they didn’t give a fuck, but that’s what I think.

  12. Trouble says:

I knew electronica was a dumb fuck when i read that he was riding with benzino and supported his beef against eminem and that he agreed when benzino called EM Hitler of the rap game.Fuck this bitch

  13. “But so far I honestly haven’t heard him spit anything deeper or more ground breaking than a Kanye, Drake, or even a Rick Ross and Jeezy.”

    You’re joking right? Surely.

  14. SuperNova says:

He is getting cocky now that he got a record deal with jayz…lol.
    On another note.Lloyd Banks H.F.M 2 flopped hard with only 13 000 copies sold.Ooucchh

  15. Kayo says:

I think what he was saying, if you read the whole interview, is that his journey through life lets him talk about certain things that Kanye or Jeezy, being more implanted in the industry, simply can’t.

Read the interview, he’s not saying that his position allows him to surpass any of those artists…But it allows for him to attack angles that they cannot.

    -kayo

  16. zezzoi says:

But so far I honestly haven’t heard him spit anything deeper or more ground breaking than a Kanye, Drake, or even a Rick Ross and Jeezy.

    ^^

    Then you ain’t listening, b…

“Shiny Suit Theory”, “The Announcement”, “Exhibit C”, “Dear Moleskine”, “Swagger Jackson’s Revenge”, “Exhibit A” plus many more…

    Go look em up…

Dude’s got about 65 songs out right now. Listen before you make statements like that…

With that said, this nigga is WAY too arrogant for someone who ain’t really drop a proper collection of music yet. Act I don’t count, that shit was fucked up. I’m really suprised he put Kanye West in that list…cuz that nigga DOES NOT only give us a product. His passion for music is on another level compared to everyone else in the game… everyone else tho, yea I can see what he’s saying

  17. zezzoi says:

I knew electronica was a dumb fuck when i read that he was riding with benzino and supported his beef against eminem and that he agreed when benzino called EM Hitler of the rap game.Fuck this bitch

    ^

em stan spotted….nigga that was OLD ass footage, Jay E was just tryna play his part in order to get put on …

jay E & em are cool now. it’s been said they’ve worked together already …

  18. wtf says:

KANYE’S ALBUM IS NOT A CLASSIC… IF THATS A CLASSIC THAN HIS FIRST AND SECOND JOINTS WERE TOP 5 ALL TIME SMH..

  19. wtf says:

KANYE’S NEW ALBUM IS JUST NOT FOR ME… ANYONE WHO THINKS HIS NEW JOINT IS CLOSE TO HIS EARLY WORK IS A FOOL OR JUST DOESN’T LIKE HIP HOP..

HIS NEW JOINT SOUNDS LIKE A TECHNO ALBUM AND IT ONLY HAD 7 NEW SONGS… HE HAD A FEW GOOD ONES BUT I WAS REALLY DISSAPOINTED

KANYE FANS THINK ANYTHING HE PUTS OUT IS DOPE

I TYPE IN CAPS CAUSE IM AN INTERNET THUG

  20. mac DIESEL says:

I GET WUT HE SAYIN’!!!! THOSE ARTISTS HE MENTIONED ARE IN A POSITION TO WHERE THEU CAN’T HAVE THE FREEDOM TO DO CERTAIN THINGS CUZ THEY’RE IN THE MAINSTREAM OPPOSED TO HIM BEIN’ UNDERGROUND!!!! UNLESS U LIKE HIP-HOP U WILL NEVER KNOW ABOUT JAY ELECT!!!! THAT’S HOW MUCH HE’S UNDER THE RADAR!!!! THAT’S THE FREEDOM HE’S TALKIN’ ABOUT!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  21. Chex says:

    @Everyone calling Kanye’s album a classic.
A classic albums means that it stands the test of time. Kanye’s album just dropped this week if I’m not mistaken (I don’t follow commercial acts) so if you’re saying Kanye’s album has stood the test of a couple of days, then so be it. You guys need to give an album a moment to breathe before you give it the “classic” title.

As far as Jay Electronica goes, I respect his opinion and him not being afraid to say whats on his mind knowing that he’s going to get some backlash for his comments. I hope he doesn’t go pop since he’s riding with Jay -Z though (no diss).

  22. Wow says:

Just release the fucking album already!!

  23. lboogie718 says:

shout out to upnorthtrips for that!!!!

  24. Tru says:

    @B.Dot
Hopefully you took this shit outta the wrong context, cause Jay Elect sounding mad arrogant with this, I like the dudes (limited supply of) songs… But I stand by Ye and I fuxx with Jeezy from tine to time… So dude kinda went down on my roster with this…

  25. haters are annoying says:

THIS NIGGA IS TO DAMN FULL OF HIMSELF LOL I KINDA GET WHAT HE’S SAYING THOUGH

  26. dashing says:

True, classic albums have to stand the test of time but if you listen to the album and say Damn, Every single track is very fuckin good, then there’s nothing wrong with saying it. XXL Rating, 10/10 pitchfork, it’ll probably get 5 mics in the Source…

Anyway, Jay Electronica’s statement is retarded. Kanye has been making true to himself for years now. Even if it wasn’t straight up hip hop. (808s and Heartbreak) And Drake. Love him or hate him, but the dude is definitely making the music that he wants to make. He’s a young dude who likes to rap about girls and partying. Just because Jay Elect doesn’t rap about the same things doesn’t mean that he’s being inauthentic.

He needs to just shut the fuck up and make some music because he’s shown an ability to put his foot in his mouth in the past. Ye does it too but he at least earned it by putting out dope albums first. That said I’m loooking forward to Act 2 more than anything else next year. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype he’s creating..

  27. Trouble says:

zezzoi So what if it was old footage? He still supported one of the dumbest beef in the history of rap. And stuck up for the biggest bitch in the game “JayE was just tryna play his part in order to get put on” So he doesnt have a mind of his own? You call me an EM stan, well then you must surly be a JayE stan the way you are sticking up for that hypocrite.Fuck outta here nigga

  28. KIDD says:

Kanye risked his career doing 808’s. I’m not saying that im the biggest kanye fan but he didn’t just deliver a product. He showed emotion on that album which made people doubt him.

  29. BAWSE says:

BIRD ASS NI99A, USED DIDDY 2BLOW UP AN SIGNED W/JAY WERE’S DA HONOR IN THAT OL FUQ NI99A!!! NOW HE’S TRYIN 2TEAR DOWN ALL THE OTHER HOT RAPPERS SMH WHAT DIS LAME DONT KNOW IS JAY DOESNT KNOW HOW 2PROMOTE HIS OWN ARTIST IE. J MOLD I MEAN J.COLE LOL JADA KISS 1ALBUM IN 4YRS WTF HOPE IT WORKS OUT IN THE END 4’M

  30. moe z says:

I really respect the rapper Jay Elct .
can’t wait for the album .
he is one of the best rapper’s out there u’ll see it your self soon.

  31. moe z says:

U’ALL HATERS CANT REACH WHAT JAY E REACHED
HE IS GOOD BUT AIN’T BETTER THEN ANYBODY YET WAIT FOR THE ALBUM !!

  32. sideshowRaheem says:

So I guess Jay Electironica has never heard “All Falls Down”, “Family Business”, “Roses”, “Hey Mama”, “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”, “Champion”, “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”, “Everything I Am”, “Big Brother”, “Power” “Devil in a New Dress”, “Blame Game” or the entire the entire 808s & Heartbreak album. Kanye puts himself out there more the 99% of these artists in any genre he just know how to package for the the masses. I love you J-E but you are really sounding fucking stupid with that statement.

  33. On the reals says:

    @zezzoi
Them songs got bomb beats but dude aint no Mos Def, Andre 3000, Nas, or Common. And in my honest opinion he aint even a Kanye, Drake, Jeezy, or Ross. And he wont be til he drops an album. And based off all the songs I’ve heard from Jay Elec I cant say I ever thought “wow that song was risky or ground breaking” Like I said, I hope he backs up the talk, ima fan but we all know being hot on the undergroung doesn’t mean you can deliever a dope album. See Cassidy, Jin, Canibus, etc.

  34. zezzoi says:

    See Cassidy, Jin, Canibus, etc.

    ^

ha…canibus … that guy is dope, it’s too bad he tried to battle Em tho…Em killed his career

  35. Kofi says:

Like Kanye said in that video from the Rolling Stone offices a few months back talk like that is the hipster justification for failure. Jay may have integrity but he better best know that those execs up at Roc Nation are expecting him to delver a PRODUCT so they can SELL it. What he said was right but he needs to recant Kanye’s name from that shit because he has found a balance that allows him to deliver songs for radio play that are also songs that reflect who he is as a person.

  36. AnuKiNSkywalker says:

I’M SAID IT BEFORE AND GONNA SAY IT AGAIN YA MAN SOUNDS LIKE NAS IN SOME SONGS THEN SOUNDS LIKE BIG IN OTHERS, SAY HIS NAME WW3? HE’S NOT A BATTLE RAPPER HE JUST KNOWS HOW TO PUT WORDS TOGETHER REAL GOOD ,HIP HOP LACKS
ORIGINAL TALENT , NO NEW STYLES ,EVERYBODY COMING IN THE GAME SOUNDS LIKE SOMEBODY, IF A RAPPER CAME UP SOUNDING LIKE 2PAC NIGGAS WOULD DISS HIM ,THIS DUDE JAY ELECT SOUNDS LIKE OTHER RAPPERS AND PPL DICK RIDING HIM. HE’S ALLRIGHT BUT HE’S NOT ORIGINAL PUFFY SIGN HIM WOULD BEEN A SLAP IN THE FACE TO BIGGIE, PPL FORGET THE REAL KING OF NEW YORK BATTLE WAS SUPOSE TO BE NAS VS BIGGIE SMALLS.

  37. AnuKiNSkywalker says:

JAY-Z VS NAS WAS AN ONGOING THING WICH CAME FROM GHOST AND RAEKWON DISSING BIG AND NIGGAS SAYING BIG BITING OFF NAS ALBUM COVER. NAS NEVER REALLY FELT JAY LIKE THAT THEN QB AND ALL THIS BACK AND FORTH TALK HAPPEN , BUT IF BIG NEVER WOULD OF PAST AWAY THE BATTLE BETWEEN BIGGIE VS NAS WOULD BEEN VERY CLOSE PROBALY WOULD BEEN MORE BATTLE SONGS THEN WHAT HAPPEN WITH JAY-Z AND NAS . SO STOP SWEATING THESE NEW ARTIST WHO COPY OTHER NIGGAS STYELS YA BUGGING THE FUK OUT.

  38. Tru says:

    Straight up co-sign with SideshowRaheem

  39. Frontrunner says:

Jay Electronica doesn’t release enough music to criticize others.

  40. white milk says:

thats a stupid @ss comment considering everyone is different, came up different, had different experiences, think differently, etc… in turn giving of myself will be different from the next person giving of him/herself. i hate that type of under handed shyt. why u gotta try to compare yourself to another artist. just be who YOU are and dont worry about the rest. put out YOUR music. the “real hip hop heads” may want everyone to sound and speak on the same shyt but majority rules and the majority likes variety so pls get off that shyt and put out some music.

  41. WOW says:

Honestly i aint into rappers who say other rappers names so other mutha fuckas could watch em he did it with rza in the past, let us hear this album you’ve been working on dude let us hear…this niga doesnt say anything special in his raps ive listened to try to see what all the hype was about Honestly… exhibit c is his biggest record to date… i think its a bigger beat than anything so what do we have without just blaze… hes talking about being homeless a few years ago and hearing a voice in his head , get scolded by 5 percenters and now he got puff , ti and whoever else telling him he needs to rap…cool story but i mean is this is the future of hip hop…as a fan of music the only thing i draw from this is than anybody can make it cool i respect that … but dude kanye has a story as well, so does drake, and jeezy, even ross i dont get it , your real bcuz you were homeless. save it. we all struggle

  42. sway-z says:

Jay Elec just needs to drop the album, save all the talk til then, cause you ain’t in position to be critiquing yet. Canabis got me once nigga, I ain’t falling twice, lol

Speaking of Classic albums though, an album should have to stand the test of time, but there’s also instant classics as well. The first time through Supreme Clientele I knew that shit was gonna ring off the same way in 10 years, and it does

  43. Maestro says:

I agree with him to an extent. But Kanye and Drake are real artists, regardless what any hating fool has to say about it. I’d like him to explain this further, to be honest. I don’t think he means it to sound the way it does.

  44. im THE MONSTER!! says:

    its JAYELECTIME!!!!

  45. m says:

lol @ peeps gettin mad cause he mentioned any who cares his opinion so what

  46. WTF?? says:

RELEASE AN ALBUM HOMIE, AND THEN START SAYING SHIT LIKE THAT. YOU HAVEN’T BLOWN UP YET. YOU HAD THAT ONE SONG… AND AFTER THAT HAVEN’T REALLY HEARD MUCH FROM YOU. THE LITTLE BIT I HAVE HEARD WASN’T THAT GREAT. SO STEP YOUR GAME UP. YOU WISH YOU HAD HALF OF THE CAREER OF THOSE RAPPERS YOU MENTIONED. DONT GET COCKY NOW JUST CUZ YOU GOT SIGNED WITH J. STOP RUNNING YOUR MOUTH ABOUT SELLING YOU A “PRODUCT” AND RUN YOUR MOUTH IN THE STUDIO.

  47. Slim says:

He needs to stay in his lane. Just because he was homeless, don’t mean shit to mean. Everyone deals with their own shit on a daily basis, this clown has dropped three songs in a year, and he’s gassed? Drop a classic, fuck drop an ALBUM then let’s talk.

  48. ZoomZoom says:

HAHA HE DIDN’T MENTION WAYNE CUZ HES FROM NEW ORLEANS AND IS AFRAID
WAYNE GETS HIS HOLLYGROVE NIGGAZ AND DEM BLOOD GANG NIGGAZ TO DUMP HIS BODY IN A RIVER!

DONT EVEN MENTION THAT YOUNG MONEY NIGGA DRAKE YOU 35 YEAR OLD SCUM BAG!

  49. YMCMB says:

@ zoom zoom .. lmao. !! true, the only one missing on that list was weezy.

  50. Trav1 says:

    As the man said:

I’m sailing on a cloud, they trailing below
my shrink told me it’s a feeling they’ll never know
I pack up all my sins and I wear ‘em to the show
and let ‘em go, let ‘em go, let ‘em go, let ‘em go!!
