’10 Mixtapes: #6 J.Cole Friday Night Lights

When the album coming out? Man, the people been askin’. No 2010 was not the year when anticipation was met with the major label debut of Roc Nation’s Jermaine Cole. Instead Fayetteville’s Finest returned to his mixtape roots. FNL‘s foundation is built on strong previously released material (the furious freestyle “Back To The Topic”; the jolting Kanye jack “Villematic”; the marvelous “Premeditated Murder”) and new joints that exhibit Cole’s lyrical growth. Introspection is evident on dope tracks like the boomin’ “Before I’m Gone” and the formidable closer “Farewell”. Although not as potent as its classic predecessor, 2009’s The Warm Up, Cole proves his bars is up and he just might fulfill his promise and shake up the rap game in the next 12 months. One hit away.

  4. flawda says:

I can’t name 5 mixtapes better than FNL this year, and if you say some shit like Kush and OJ, then i know for a fact ya’ll don’t lyricism or content serious because neither Wiz or Currensy talk about shit other than weed. FNL is by far the best mixtape i heard all year beside More about nothing, what other rapper or up and coming rapper is talking about real shit beyond weed, rims, cars, and pussy.

Then again, yall are the same idiots who name Wocka Floca the most slept on album of the year. Don’t tell me yall are on the payolla bullshit.

  5. dm0ny says:

wow who runs this shit flockavelli’s an underrated album and j.cole’s mixtape which was better then most albums out this year gets a number 6 find another job biasness sucks

  6. thatdude says:

the only mixtape even close to fuckin with this is MM4 so your list failed already. RR fallin off hard

  7. swins89 says:

  8. mac DIESEL says:

DOPE MIXTAPE!!!! U COULD HEAR THE GROWTH LYRICALLY AND MUSICALLY!!!! SHOULDA BEEN TOP 3!!!! GET YA MINDS RIGHT RR!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  9. Drew says:

I bet Lebron Flocka James 2 is the number #1 mixtape to these niggas. smh

  10. Losenges or something says:

Wow, the top 5 must be mythical, superhero-esque (imaginary) mixtapes. I’m sure one of them is a Waka Flocka release, right YN? And if ‘Kush & OJ’ is one of them, your list is lamer than Wiz’s annoying fake laugh.

  11. Chance says:

Should be at least top 6. now watch Kush And OJ be 1

  12. cole world says:

This should be top 3, if not #1. i’m nervous to see the rest of this list.

  13. postman says:

    krit had a better mixtape

  14. JZ says:

I have to agree with all the above. This should at least have been in the top3

  15. Nucky Thompson says:

Why is it that all the retarded “shock” articles always seem to come from YN? I mean I was ready to look past the Distant Relatives thing cuz its all opinion, but damn quit with the Yellow journalism.

Thank God 2dopeboyz is still a decent site, thats where youll find me.

  16. Errol says:

Fan of a Fan is gonna be #1 with the way this is going

  17. Later says:

6? How is this not 1? Whats up with this…

  18. nyg718 says:

BULLSHIT. THIS BY FAR IS # 1 . THE BEST MUSIC PUT OUT ALL YEAR PERIOD

  19. Nathaniel says:

    i’ll say this…

friday night lights was weak. the warm up was waaaaaaay better. for j.cole, it was lackluster. he can rap, i’m rooting for that nigga… but friday night lights was boring to me. lyrically dope, but musically, overall just mundane.

  20. Mohammed says:

FNL was my favorite mixtape of the year. I thought it would be atleast in the Top 3. The only mixtape coming close was Big K.R.I.T.’s

  21. swins89 says:

    @postman i agree

  22. Mook says:

MR ZONE 6 TOP 5! WATCH!

  23. dontcare says:

the next 5 are kendrick, fabulous, rick ross, wiz khalifa and joe budden

  24. Word says:

All this nigga Wiz talks about is Weed. At least Cole give you a little of everything. Top 3 if not Number 1 best tape this year if you ask me. YN getting paid to say dumb shit yall should know that by now. LeBron Flocka James is gonna be number 1 watch.

The only reason some may not put this #1 is the production but YN didnt even touch on that so im assuming the production wasnt a problem for him. Hm, I dunno RR yall site was dry as fuck for like a week straight posting Saigon shit, then yall got these list to build some buzz back up but yall fucked up the the #1 underrated and disappointing albums. What the fuck are yall smoking? B.Dot got his doo-rag on too tight and YN cant think beyond Jays penis. SMH

I aint gonna say this tape was better than Warm Up but it was pretty close. I cant name 5 tapes better this year other than Wales which was under this and MM4 which im sure yall gonna mention.

  25. Mohammed says:

Oh, Friday Night Lights was better prodcution wise than The Warm Up. You can hear the improvement in his production since working with No I.D.

  26. flawda says:

No wonder why The Source and XXL Magazine fell the fuck off, you lame ass editors and critics have lower the bar so low for the mediocre shit and totally change the standards for what’s good and what’s wack. I bet J Cole came in 6th because he didn’t have enough twitter followers or whatever dumb reason yall use to judge rappers nowadays. lol

  27. Word says:

    @Mook

STFU nigga that Gucci mixtape was wack but the way RR been recently I wouldnt be surprised

  28. Catcher freeman says:

this, mood muzik and, the funeral service should be top 3. Royce’s BE3 should be in this spot instead. i bet ya rozay gonna get within the top3

  29. Mohammed says:

More About Nothing and Mood Muzik 4 were quality mixtapes too….

  30. petey tree says:

FNL was good I think #6 is fitting tho. As a whole it was not better than kush and oj or tinc2. Those mixtapes had songs made for the mixtape whereas FNL seemed to throw a bunch of songs together that were released earlier.

  31. gusto says:

top 3 tapes no order V5, MM4 and FNL

  32. Word says:

    @flawda

“he didnt have enough twitter followers”

Lmao! Thats what they base shit on these days. How many likes does Cole have on Facebook? I guess not enough to make the mixtape better huh?

  33. ARon says:

i hung with yall on the DR diss, but come on J. Cole raps circles around all these other clowns AND produces his own shit. should at least be #3.
@dontcare i agree with that but ross is technically 2011. im thinkin big sean…

  34. Ice Cold says:

J.cole Dope mixtape with that b.o.b. No genre to

  35. The Real Truth says:

this is the last straw, I will not be coming back to this WACK website after seeing this low ass rating and the other list…. i’m going back to SOHH, RealtalkNY and AllHipHop

this website has offically become trash….

  36. Weed= LAME says:

THIS SHOULD BE NUMBER 1 !!!! THIS WAS THE BEST COLLECTION OF SONGS TO DROP IN 2010 ! To each his own .

  37. Nathaniel says:

    oh, yeah…

and KRIT Wuz Here was definitely better than FNL. i agree @postman and @swins89

  38. illie says:

I LOST ALOT OF RESPECT FOR THIS SITE. SMH YN THOUGHT U ACTUALLY KNEW YA SHIT..GUESS I WAS WRONG..LAST NIGHTS DISTANT RELATIVES FUCK UP NOW THIS? HA SMH #FAIL!!!!!! FNL IS DEFINITELY TOP 3 AT LEAST!

  39. The Real Truth says:

this mixtape is better then 98.9% of albums to come out and there is not 1 mixtape thats better, maybe 1 or 2 is equal…… NONE BETTER…. I cant wait to see the wack shit u gonna put in front of this

  40. iHate says:

6?! There is no fucking mixtape doper than this!

  41. nsisu says:

no wonder the game is so fucked up! number 6!!! that’s it ?!!!!??? THIS MIXTAPE LITERALLY SHUT DOWN THE INTERNET, IT TOOK LONGER THAN MOST ANY MIXTAPE I HAVE DOWNLOADED THIS YEAR.

  42. Joshua says:

I THINK THIS IS A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT BY YN&B.DOT. THE MORE WE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LIST.THE MORE WE COME BACK LIKE STEPPED ON DOPE

  43. NYC says:

6? this site is a joke hahahahahaha

    its #1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. flawda says:

    @ Joshua

    cosign!

I think they are just tryna draw traffic to the website and spark controversy!

  45. GTFO says:

Should of been higher. Thank god that this is just based on RR’s opinion and not a national level.

  46. D-$ says:

WHAT?!?!?!??! HOW IS THIS NOT HIGHER, THIS SHIT WAS LIFE CHANGING TO ME. SOME OF THE STRONGEST AND DEEPEST AND OVERALL BEST SHIT IVE EVER LISTENED TO ALBUM OR NO ALBUM. THE WARM UP MIGHT BE BETTER BUT FNL SHOULD STILL BE #1. WHO IS THIS GUY RATING THIS????????????? GO FIND ANOTHER JOB

  47. ZoomZoom says:

THIS MIXTAPE WAS STRAIGHT TRASH LOL SHIT SUCKED BALLS WASTED SPACE ON MY COMPUTER DOWNLOADING THIS GARBAGE LIKE 1 HOT SONG AND THE REST WAS LYRICALLY ASS

  51. Y’all buggin! Cole mixtape should b #1… I kno yall gonna throw Kendrick Lamar & Big Sean’s mixtapes above this but Cole’s mixtape was album-like… only mixtape that is arguably better is Kush & OJ… B.Dot u tweakin fam

  52. Jaymalls says:

IDK… i think Wizs Kush & OJ had a bigger impact commercially…. thats what really started his buzz n helped him start selling out arenas. It also gets more spins then J Coles FNL mixape!

Fabolous TINC Pt 2 Mixtape, Joe Buddens MM4 Mixtape, and Rick Ross TAA EP were 3 of the beast mixtapes 2 come out last year. N.e.N. (No Explantation Necessary!)

  53. MrUrbanCNN says:

come on RR yall tripping with this. This mixtape should be in the top 2. This and Mood Muzik 4. This mixtape sounded like an album. I really want to see what’s on the rest of the list. and @ZoomZoom kill ya self

  54. cole world says:

    @ZoomZoom LIL B? kill yourself.

@ZoomZoom Man i feel sorry for people like you who don’t know what real hip hop is. I remember growing up listening to Nas Pac Big and how lyrical and passionate they were. J. Cole represents real hip hop. Back in the day you could go on in street corner and find doper rappers than mainstream rappers and even some underground. Now All people care about are hot beats and hooks not actually what rappers are saying. Try to listen again and maybe you’ll see where i’m coming from.

  62. pressure says:

WOW. Okay, I’m done with using this site as a source of information for the hip hop community. Just a good place to come listen to new music before anyone else now. The Nas thing I could understand, simply because he wasn’t saying the album sucked, but that it didn’t live up to expectations. it should have been a classic, and it wasn’t.

But THIS, undoubtedly the best mixtape of the year, and you give it a 6 on the list. You should be ashamed

  63. Connect says:

@ZoomZoom You just said bow wow is better. So do you mean to tell me his verses make you say wow or omg. Come on son!

  64. Carolina Girl says:

These people sleepin on Jermaine Cole again. He had the hottest mixtape of 2010. Nobody fuckin wit Cole. He inspires people to do better in life and he shows them that with hard work and preserverence you can make it. A lot of people sayin he bringin the Ville down but shit he just telling what he been thru. His lyrical content is way better than most of these iliterate ass mufuckas. Cole is smart and very articulate so that helps with the delivery of his lyrics. Anyway J. Cole fuck these biased ass people just know that Sampson and Cumberland Counties got you. Belee dat!!!!! Aint nobody else puttin on for the 910 like you bruh. Keep doin ya thang

  65. raywill01 says:

I disagree but FNL was dope as fuck i kno real music when i hear it

  66. Carolina Girl says:

Aye yall!!!!! Call up the radio and request some of J. Cole’s songs for the 5:00 mix on foxy 99. You can also you can get this station online or your iphone app.

  68. I wish this mixtape was on number 2 but i love it.

  69. Nasty B says:

First that DR blunder and now this? LOL. FNL should be #1 and NOTHING less than top 3. Who the fuck is the dumbwit making these lists? Blows my mind.
