Eleven weeks after the release of Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday, the album lands at the top spot on the Billboard charts. This makes her the first female rapper to do so since Eve’s 1999 debut, Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady.

If you can’t rap your opinion doesn’t matter, its music, listen to it or don’t. These artists have no obligation to reflect the streets, reflect reality or be who you expect them to be. Music is an art and anyway you cut it art is subjective so everyone has an opinion. Nicki Minaj makes music thats escapist and contrived in her fantasy world, her artist persona is like a girl who wants to be a princess. 50 Cent has a persona of a player/gangsta so does Gucci Mane but its not real, don’t be fooled into thinking gangs, organized crime and hustling is cool. Its not cool, its just a living for some. The MSM thinks of rap as a propaganda mechanism to glorify crime not because people like to listen to the glorification of crime but because they don’t respect rap as art. When we look at rap for truth we neglect rap’s capacity as an art. My own parents don’t consider Rap to be music because Rap is used like a mirror, like a tool. Why would we stifle Hip-Hop the only art, the only positive thing that collectively came out of the Ghettos of the Bronx with our naive expectations? I say let Rap run its course and if that means it merges with pop music, so be it. We’ll always have Rap at its purest in our memories, nothing can take that from us.
