Stephen Hill On BET Awards Backlash

The BET Awards nominations were announced earlier this week and not everyone was too pleased. The network’s site interviewed President of Music Programming and Specials, Stephen Hill to provide some insight. Below is a breakdown on some of the hot button issues. The Awards air June 26th.

On Trina’s snub for Best Female Rapper

Okay, that was because Trina didn’t submit a video that was in during the eligibility period. Let me back up. To be eligible, here’s what you have to have: a video that’s submitted and then first played on BET…between April 1 of one year and March 30 of the next year. So for this eligibility period it would be April 1 of 2010 to March 30 of 2011. She did not release a video to us in that time. “Million Dollar Girl” came in March. I think it was March 12 or so of 2010. And so she was in last year’s nominees for that.

On Nicki Minaj’s Imminent Win For Best Female Rapper

Here’s what I think: We have this category as an aspirational category. Right now, there are very few women who put out hip hop videos…If there’s no nominees, we’re gonna keep this category in the show because one day down the line it’s going to be filled just like the men.

Really? Even if there are no nominees?
Yeah.

On J.Cole’s Best New Artist Nomination

Specifically for J. Cole, whoever had their first video under their name given to us in a year period, it’s eligible for New Artist. Remember Nicki was up for new artist last year. Her album wasn’t out either.

On Chris Brown’s Nomination for Best Actor

My thought on that is as follows: We assembled the Academy. We try to make it as varied as possible. But when the Academy comes back with their results—again, it’s not any of our individual shows—that’s the decision we’ve made, to trust the Academy. When they come back with a decision, we stick by that decision.

So the people really do get a voice in these awards.
It’s only the people’s voice. I want to be very clear. It’s not like, “Oh, we like four of them but we wanna stick Chris Brown in as an actor.” That’s who they voted for. Between music industry folk, bloggers, writers and fans, Chris Brown was nominated for an acting awards.

Removing Book Of Eli For Best Movie

Okay, so in some of our passion, we don’t always get it right. The Book of Eli is now no longer in the Best Movie category. We had an enthusiastic Denzel Washington fan who threw The Book of Eli into the possibles for Movie of the Year. And there are so many Denzel Washington fans and Hughes Brothers fans out there that they voted it as one of the nominations. The problem was that that it didn’t come out during the eligibility period. So we’ve removed it from the nomination.

  13. BRIX says:

We all know Bamboozled Entertainment Television (BET) is full of shit, at least most do. This dude has bullshit excuses. Who exactly is apart of this “Academy”? The 106 and College Hill braintrust? C’Mon fam, just say “we picked whom and whatever was repeated on BET for the past year, regardless of whether it was hot or not, relevant, or even inspiring and this is what we (Academy) came up with.” At least then it’ll be the truth.

  14. James says:

DONT GET MAD YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST DIDNT GET NOM! BET THE REAL DEAL FUCK CRACKERS!!!

  15. ZoomZoomDad-Otis says:

BET is a ass backwards network. Only award show BET that was str8 was the “BET Comedy Awards”

  16. Andrew says:

they obviously will be getting paid a lot of $$$ from the Young Money camp for keeping that female award in the roster, because let’s be honest, if Nicki doesn’t win, not only will it be a huge shock, but BET will have a huge backlash from one of their biggest target markets: kids.

  17. Soul_Assasin says:

In other words, were nominating artist that will bring huge viewer ratings, we break the rules, but the young generation doesn’t bother…
BTW, for the people complaining about the eminem snub, this is the BET Awards, celebrating African Americans achievement in film, music, etc… Is not the hip hop awards big difference…

  18. BRIX says:

    @James
You do know that BET is owned by “crackers” aka Viacom, whom also own MTV & VH1, when its original owner Bob Johnson sold out to ’em…just thought you should know

  19. Andrew says:

@Soul_Assasin but Justin Bieber got a nomination last year… last time i checked he’s not African American

  20. Africa says:

^Yeah they wanted more viewers shrug

  21. Yup ! says:

    Cosign @BRIX

  22. Soul_Assasin says:

@Andrew well they probably nominated him cause they know they were getting sponsorship money its all about the numbers…

  23. Andrew says:

@Soul_Assasin it’s so sad that there’s not a shred of integrity in these awards

  24. mac DIESEL says:

  28. Soul_Assasin says:

@Andrew is not as bad as the BET Hip hop awards, where they have dumb nomination; best hustla? Seriously how does a rapper win that award, by judging who slangs the best shit?!

  29. Donn says:

AND I WILL BE SNUGLE UP IN MY PINK SNUGGIE!!! GIRL POWER YAY!

  30. Andrew says:

@Soul_Assasin haha yea see i don’t even fuck with the hip hop awards, because that show basically puts another nail in the coffin of legitimate, respectable hip hop every year. only good thing about the hip hop awards are those cyphers. they should get rid of the show and just do a half hour of cyphers instead. i’d actually watch that.

  31. kaoz says:

    1. drop a mixtape
    2. and had verses on Hov’s BP3 and Miguel’s single.
does that really garner a BEST new artist nomination?

    BET is ‘disgusting’ (JCole voice)

  40. Converse says:

@still best He destroy kanye, cyhi, big sean and pusha on?looking for trouble? *shrug*

  41. Noringtone says:

They could of at least entered Jean Grae against Nicki minaj for female rapper.

  42. Brandon says:

I wouldn’t have been exposed to rap period if it weren’t for BET. I wasn’t even allowed to watch BET (or listen to rap) growing up. While I don’t think BET is the greatest network imaginable, It is the ONLY network dedicated to black culture, music. It was the only place I could watch hip-hop videos, before YouTube. Today I can’t watch BET along with MTV or VH1 because its plain embarrassing.

That said we need a Black Owned Network (call it B.O.N.) that has Tavis Smiley, plays hip-hop videos from the underground, the 90’s and showcases “Black Art.” I want to watch a fucking interview with MF DOOM, Sade, Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, Maya Angelou. Not Trey Songz or Chris Brown.

  43. the ghost of osama bin laden says:

    ^yessssssssssss!

  44. Jonathan says:

    J. Cole is a dope rapper, but I don’t think he’ll win Best New Artist… if anything Wiz Khalifa will probably win it, due to the amount of work he’s put in

The BET Hip Hop Awards are actually better than this though

  45. Black Shady says:

Why the fuck Em not nominated?

    FUCK YOU BET!

  46. Enzo says:

Bieber can get nominated but Em can’t? BULLSHIT!

  47. swag me out bitch! says:

The Cyphers durin the BET Hip Hop Awards is the only legitimate, relevant, and intelligent idea BET has had in years..

  48. TheCool says:

No Lupe or Em? 0 reason why they shouldnt get nominated. Fuck BET. They’re just as full of dick as MTV and all that other shit.

  49. MadMike0082 says:

This is a crazy bad move to be retracting nominations and shit. I bet all the racists are having a blast talking about what going on here……

  50. bossross says:

y yall care wold gona end today at 6 google it

  51. Jinx says:

who da fuck complained bout my nigga coleworld getting a nomination

fuck all these hating ass niggaz

    coleworld comig nigga.

  52. Really though? says:

Didn’t say shit about Em or Lupe. smh. That best male hip hop artist category is horrible. Wayne…he just gets nominated because he’s Wayne, which is ridiculous. Drake, ain’t done shit worthy of an award in a while, his album was forever ago. Rick Ross? lol that fat ass fraud just makes the same ol’ shit, everything he put out sound the same. Kanye, just dropped an album that did well, so he deserves to be in the category. And B.O.B.’s pop music ass is in the same boat as Drake, he ain’t dropped shit worthy of an award. smh. TOO MANY GOOD ARTISTS get overlooked with these BET(Bullshit Entertainment Television) awards, which is why i don’t watch em’.

  53. Really though? says:

O, and if Beyonce can be in there, Alicia Keys deserves to be in it too.

  54. thatnigga says:

@swag me out bitch… the cYPHERS are for the bet hiphop awards

  55. El Guapo says:

First off, trying to put down BET because they’re owned by Viacom…I don’t mean disrespect to anyone on here but that’s such a small minded argument. BET might not exist today if they weren’t a part of such a huge conglomerate like Viacom. Sure, it might put a sour taste in your mouth but w/o the financial support from a company Viacom I doubt a BET would have survived…and if by chance it did survive they would certainly be working w/ a smaller budget. As far as the nominations go, unless he was telling all lies his explanations seem to make sense. If Trina’s video didn’t make the cut because of the deadline, are they supposed to make an exception? Based on their deadline, her video was eligible LAST year. If they make exception for her than they’re setting a precedence that could bite them in the @ss for future nominations. Now if Trina or anyone else can prove Stephen Hill and BET wrong then I’ll be the first person to demand changes.

Also, Stephen mentioned that like most award shows there’s a committee of people that vote on these awards. Now if you wanna argue w/ the nominations, make sure you’re pointing the finger at the right people. If it gets to the point where there’s an overwhelming amount of outrage over these or any future nominations then at the point BET might be forced to make changes w/ the nomination process.

  56. ki says:

so what video did Lola Monroe have playing on BET again?
