R.I.P. Nick Ashford

Nick Ashford, one half of the legendary songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson, succumbed to throat cancer yesterday in New York Hospital. He was 69.

Along with wife Valerie Simpson, the tandem penned several classics including “Solid” , “You’re All I Need (To Get By)”, and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. In connection to hip-hop, their music has been sampled and covered by several artists including MC Lyte, 50 Cent and most famously, Method Man. Nick is survived by his wife and two daughters.

@Cold Death – You are making me feel older than necessary, tsk, tsk, tsk.

Thanks you for your great contributions, Mr. Simpson. He and his wife were definitely a testament to the classic hit, Solid!

This why Hip-Hop is kinda of corny, cuz u have kids born wit dat crack addiction DNA they can’t relate to music if aint from a nigga wit a street corner tatted on his face. Then they say WTT or Distant Relatives is whack. Bet u didn’t know Frank’s Ocean verse “alright alright” on “No Church In The Wild”, on WTT was from a comedy skit by Kevin Hart.

@madmike0082, actually according to reports that was a wig michael wore. under his hair was a little afro. i swear he helped create the lace front wig. but either way rip to two musical greats.

I was just thinking about them too. Just over the weekend, wondering where they been. Such a sad day in music !! It’s so fucked that music fans take artists for granted, not knowing where the music they love (Hip Hop) came from. Where these emcees got their inspiration from. This man along with his wife penned classic joints !! How the fuck you don’t acknowledge greatness !!

@ The Cold Death : what are you talking about ? Im JJ. And Im speaking the truth about real music. I can understand that you arent a fan of pop and r and b music. But songs such as the ones these 2 made are classic and soulful. I dont listen to much r and b music today either but Im definitely not ignorant to those pioneers of the genre. I think you should just show more respect where it is due. And you shouldnt disrespect a persons mother like that. But then again maybe your mother didnt have any class. And she is tramp.

@ Cold Death a pissy white boy from the suburbs. His mom is the biggest whore around.

  • Inside I’m ICE, Outside I’m LAVA!!

Nah @TCD, not talking to u just in general we tend to pay respect to artist only when they’re dead, real artist not that gimmick shit. Especially in Hip-Hop, like now R/S calling EM king of Hip-Hop that shit right there is powerful it’s history repeating itself, just like calling Elvis the King of Rock. They hate on Jay cuz he talk money shit, or cuz his life style, who cares about that, for me just make good music and I’ll critique that shit after I PURCHASE that shit. But ppl get all emotional cuz ain’t them wit da baddest chick or the high bankroll. Humphrey Bogart stated “all u owe the public is a good performance” that’s what matters not their personal shit. Look at Chris Brown can’t get no love cuz he made a mistake, paid the price, and they calling him all type of shit. GOOD MUSIC that’s what counts not his personal shit cuz everyone is not perfect
