This is just my opinion, but if a rapper attacks Jay-Z it should be serious. I’m not saying that because I think they should be scared of him. No, far from it. You actually have to get his attention to the point that either you say a fact that threatens his brand and he feels like he “has to respond” or you have to be very lyrical. Otherwise, the most you are going to get is a few bars. I mean and he is only going to do that if he feels he can say a little hot line about you.
If you really look at it, there isn’t much in Jay-Z coming at you with a full song first. He already did that and look how people look at Nas’ response. Mostly “Either” was a bunch of hot lines, but it wasn’t factual. And I think Jay thinks it’s a liabitlity to his brand – to really go on the offensive. So, sure Wayne said a little hot line, but now what do you really want Jay-Z to do? Give wayne a whole verse like he did Nas? Then he’ll sit back and wait for a response. Would you advise Jay to do that? I wouldn’t, especially if I had some money on the line. Plus, he can do a lot by doing a little. If he waits on Wayne’s numbers, and Wayne’s number fall lower than WTT, I think Jay can take the high ground and just write a hot line about Wayne. Remember, Jay got at Wayne on that TI “Watch what you say to me” song, and Wayne’s response was what?
I would have told Wayne not to diss Jay. Not right now anyway. If you were so hurt by that, just drop a real diss right after HAM came out. And if he really had to he should have said his name, and not gave that bogus interview. The downside to dissing Jay is that you risk alienating Jay-Z’s fanbase. His fanbase is one of the few that still buy albums. They tend to be loyal to the point that they don’t buy his competitors albums. This is a fact that Game obviously didn’t realize. This isn’t to say that Wayne doesn’t have an audience, I personally don’t think they all have the williness to buy CDs or even download a whole album. Something old ass jay-z fans continue to do.
