’12 Underrated Albums: #2 Killer Mike R.A.P. Music

r.a.p. music-cover

Everyone likes when a plan comes together. Such is the case when producer El-P hooked up with Killer Mike to score last year’s R.A.P. Music (Rebellious African People). Bun B, T.I. and Trouble set the tone on the lyrical monster “Big Beast”. But make no mistake, Mike’s no slouch. He’s meaner than John Hinckley Jr. on “Reagan” and engrossing with narratives like “JoJo’s Chillin” and “Don’t Die”. He catches the holy ghost on the title track and wrestles with his spirituality on “Ghetto Gospel”. Before closing out the project, he saves the best for last with the ode to his grandfather, “Willie Burke Sherwood”. It’s safe to say, hip-hop’s got a new people’s champ.

In terms of sales, mass consumption and intangibles, etc. it was. That’s not to say it wasn’t good though

  4. Aggie Pride says:

I think their basing this category on good albums that didn’t sell good.

  5. Ten Macaroni Necklaces says:

Still haven’t heard this but I keep hearing good things about it. Guess I need to check it out.

I thought SchoolboyQ’s h&C would make the list but I’m guessing it’ll be Mackelmore.

The hype is warranted. It’s a good listen. especially “Willie Burke Sherwood”

  7. BBGUN says:

This is a great album. This album really shows how even if your a great rapper and have a great producer that if you don’t have a big label push you will slide through the cracks. This should be up for a Grammy but killer mike is so underground he never gets his just due. Oh and pledge 3 was dope as hell too.

  8. Will says:

    Shouldn’t this be #1?

  9. WU TANG says:

ATL AIN’T GETTIN SHINE SINCE GUCCI AND FLOCKA FUCKED IT UP. FUCKIN COONS MAKE THE SOUTH LOOK IGNORANT

  10. It's the roc says:

This album was golden era quality. Good choice. And B.Dot, maybe you should write more commentary more often, you are actually pretty good at it. You flipped that whole Holy Ghost/spirituality line like a rapper. I would vote that this category be renamed next time though

Let me know what you think and leave a comment! Got some overlaps with RR and some other new ones. Naming 10 best is impossible but we are trying to throw some shine on projects that we thought were great from 2012.
