#12 Best Albums: #6 G.O.O.D. Music Cruel Summer

good-music-cruel-summer-cover

Guess it’s safe to say, Cruel Summer is the most polarizing release of the year. Ha! Shit, I enjoyed it especially the final iTunes mastered version. Yeah Kanye made us wait til the fall for this compilation and released most of the best records first (“Mercy”, “New God Flow”, “Don’t Like”, “Clique”) but there was still new tunes to enjoy. Who can resist Ye charmingly boasting alongside fellow Chi-town Hall Of Famer, R. Kelly on “To The World”? But the heart of the album contains effective but bizarre collabo combinations. Raekwon, Common, Pusha T, 2 Chainz, and CyHi The Prynce shine on “The Morning” and The-Dream, Pusha T, and Mase zone out on “Higher”. Marsha Ambrosius’ hook on “The One” sounds like it belongs on a DJ Khaled album but Mr. West makes the tune his own (“You think you’re me?/But you ain’t me/What you done lately?). It’s a bummer if you don’t dig Cruel Summer.

  12. Jimmy says:

Aaaand now we have proof Rap Radar isn’t relevant.

  13. Ten Macaroni Necklaces says:

I think everyone was disappointed by this album because we already heard the best tracks weeks before it came out.
If we would have have heard ‘I don’t like remix’, clique, and ‘New god Flow’ for the first time when we listened to the entire album we all wouldn’t be saying it was shitty.

And “Bliss” with John legend and teyana was fire.

  14. GreenBeitz says:

there were some bangerssss on this shit

  15. Ten Macaroni Necklaces says:

All the other songs were kinda…eh, though. Especially ‘Creepers’. I hate that song.

  18. ronnie coleman says:

THIS ALBUM SUCKED, IT SHOULD BE ON THE WORST LIST. 3 GOOD SONGS, AND THEY CAME OUT MONTHS BEFORE THE ALBUM. THERE WASNT EVEN ENOUGH SONGS ON HERE TO CALL IT AN ALBUM, THIS SHIT WAS PRETENTIOUS AS FUCK

  19. Booby Boi says:

    this album was god awful

  20. GreenBeitz says:

for the truth post by YNERD: well certain rappers should, and certain rappers shouldnt, shits making hip hop look like a soap opera, and imo its corny as fuck, and no i have yet to have ever see an episode of lahh, besides for 10 min where jim jones was bout to smack up tht manager or w.e

  21. Black Shady says:

    COuple bangers on this…..

New God Flow is my shit

  22. Uh-oh says:

Based on the patterns this site follows:

    1. GKMC
    2. GFID (though they’d make it #1 if they could)
    3. ? (T.I., Big Boi?)
    4. ? (Game?)
    5. LIG (This site would NEVER give NaS a #1 on a good list)

  23. Peekay says:

Jesus Piece should be on the most disappointing albums of the year.

  24. TAS says:

GKMC, Life is Good, Killer Mike, Scoolboy Q http://rap-critic.blogspot.co.uk/

  25. Nathaniel says:

damn i guess i’m alone. lol i thought the album was dope. but then again, i was expecting something quite unlike anything i’d heard before since kanye was putting it out. and that’s pretty much what it was. The Morning, Sin City, Higher, Creepers, Bliss, Cold, To The World… i loved all them joints and the way it all came together. shit was a hodgepodge (never used that word in my life) but i still pop it in and listen to it straight through.

it prolly woulda been higher up on my list.

  26. Da Business says:

    Solid pick…

    Top 3
    GKMC
    LIG
    H&C(Schoolboy Q)

  27. Nathaniel says:

F&L 2 is gonna be next on the list.

  28. Da Business says:

    F&L2 was that deal

U know Ross is going to get #1 tho…

  29. CJF says:

i would have put this in the top 3 honestly!

oh fuck this mean Ross is gunna be in the top 5 and that was utter boring rubbish, how could he go from rich forever to gfid??!!

  30. whoa!!!! says:

    Albums that deserve to 10
    Good kids maad city
    Life is good
    Habits and contradictions
    Jesus
    Trouble man
    R.A.P. Music
    Vicious Lies and Dangerous
    Rumors
One of these is going to be left out if not more
    This site is a joke

  31. whoa!!!! says:

    Food and liquor 2 also

  32. Benzema says:

RR so far is compiling one of the worst best of lists i’ve ever seen. Self Made, 2Chainz, Welcome to Our House, Cruel Summer, Dreams & Nightmares. All these albums are f%#king terrible. You guys are making 2012 look a lot worse than it was. Are you guys making a separate list for underground releases? Cuz all I see is weak major label releases. There is more to hip hop than being on Interscope or Def Jam….SMH.

  33. cralen says:

So glad you guys included this. People seem to forget that it had so many of the year’s hottest joints on it. It’s just that most of the songs were out so far in advance of the actual release. That skewed people’s immediate perceptions. But historical perspective will be a good look for this album.

  34. Chris says:

So basically the list is just the most high profile albums of the year.

  35. hannibal lecture says:

Jesus piece GKMC Trouble Man GFID (unfortunately ) and Food & liquor 2 Schoolboy Q wasn’t mainstream enough

  36. RSX says:

This moves from 6 to like 2 if Teyana Taylor is absent

  37. Fire Marshall D.O.O.B says:

    GKMC gon be #1

  38. Jay Mools says:

    LOL. Fucking horrible.

  39. M.T says:

album was dope. Ma$e’s verse on “Higher”>>>>

  41. STRETCH says:

kinda agree with @Ten Macaroni Necklaces. people would’ve appreciated this album if we hadn’t heard those 3 singles before the album dropped, regardless of the less appealing songs
