Jay-Z Signs To Warner/Chappell Music

Big Move.

Jay-Z’s music catalogue has a new home. Yesterday, Hov signed himself and Roc Nation to a global publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music. The signing comes four months after Jon Platt‘s move to the company. As part of the pact, the publishers will administer the rights to his future and past recordings. Says Hov:

“The real meaning of success is being in the position to work with an individual you consider a friend. Jon Platt is such a person. He’s a man of extraordinary character as well as a remarkably talented executive with an ear for music and an eye for talent. It’s great to watch him grow to be one the best in the business.”

  14. Learn says:

    He didn’t sign any of his publishing away! It’s called an Admin deal.. Where you maintain 100% ownership of your publishing and Warner Chappell will license, administer (paperwork, etc). Stop rapping and start reading!

  15. Really... says:

    You fuckers are dumb. Owning the material and giving the rights to redistribute/rebroadcast are totally 2 different things. Essentially, its the same as syndicating a show. You fuckers remind me of the 3 time felon in jail that’s thinks he a lawyer and shit, yet cant manage to stay outta jail or negotiate a good plea-bargain. Lastly, who counts other nigga’s money besides bitches? Smarten up hoes. Making money off of music you already made money off of is the epitome of “flippin”. You basic
    niggas give me the giggles. How could a boss and an employee ever see eye to eye!!!!

  17. LoverofHipHop says:

    Sigh at these comments/opinions regarding the publishing side of the music business…or speaking on the matter without knowing the details thereof much less a good working knowledge of how that part of the industry works in general.

    It’s only in our industry and culture do we look from the outside in at a situation and not knowing any specifics of the deal/agreement still have the nerve/gaul to make stupid remarks with broad and completely erroneous strokes.

    warner cleared out the riff raff for the drake and jay empires

  19. Marko-V says:

    @The King so Jay never had a “Global” reach before? You would think that now he’s more famous than he’s ever been.

    @Learn why would a world renown superstar like Jay-Z need an administer for his publishing? Why pay anyone to license your music when you can do it all through an attorney you have on retainer and keep the money? Maybe this is why I’m not rich however this is why I ask questions to learn from those who know more than I do.

    @remarkoble1

  20. LoverofHipHop says:

    @Learn

    Thank you!. Glad someone here got some research in prior to speaking on the matter. Love that last statement yo.

  21. michelle michelle says:

    Don’t Admin deals also secure placements for commercial use? such? Jay already in every movie trailer. How many socks does Blue Ivy need?

  22. ZoomZoomDad-Otis says:

    “Stop rapping and start reading!”…Thats speaks volumes.

  23. Marko-V says:

    You know far too often do people feel comfortable bashing the uninformed. If you got knowledge then teach without chastising.

  26. PistolPistol says:

    in other words… Wez both wants Mo Money

  27. Stress92 says:

    He’s just having Warner/Chappell Music administer and issue licenses on behalf of his publishing companies. It’s not likely that they will take taking any ownership in his catalog and is completely separate from Warner’s recorded music division.

  28. Zen says:

    @ Marko-V

    “why would a world renown superstar like Jay-Z need an administer for his publishing? Why pay anyone to license your music when you can do it all through an attorney you have on retainer and keep the money?”

    Because Warner obviously does much more than just publishing. Essentially, what this deal does is partners two major music corporations and their networks, so that the net is cast almost twice as wide in the search for new opportunities, new talent, new ideas, new marketing, etc. Furthermore, the resources already retained by each company will be available for the other to use.

    The publishing is definitely not why this deal was done. But somebody asked about it, so somebody else clarified. Basically, by giving Warner/Chappell administrative power over the publishing rights, they can see a deal and make it on behalf of Roc Nation without having to run it all the way back up the flagpole and though the red tape.

  29. Marko-V says:

    @Zen

    I appreciate the clarification. Salute.

In a country where most people dont have jobs, the food is poisoned, the dollar is being devalued (inflation of all kinds)…govt. wanting to disarm us…..re-education camps (nazi shit)…yet…in more important news…

    …..Jay-Z signs another deal for a bazillion dollars. o_O

    why do we even care about this?? does this guy and his accomplishments make your life ANY better??

  35. Mr. A&R says:

    To me this Deal is not about or for Jay-Z I think Hov has reach his ceiling as an Artist this is about him building his Own Parent Company. This is for all the Roc Nation artist as exclusive artist & management as well as for their songwriters & producers.

  36. MR. UNDI$PUTED THE MOGUL says:

    I’M GLAD ON THIS SITE PEOPLE WERE WISE ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT THE DEAL WAS ABOUT, NOT LIKE SOME OF THE IDIOTS I HAD TO SCHOOL EARLIER TODAY! IT’S MOST DEFINITELY A GREAT DEAL FOR THE WHOLE ROC NATION!
