Hey kids look a lyricist! When I was your age they were everywhere but due to the global trapping problem and destructive urban swaggotry they’re a dying breed.

Go back and listen again… that is an EFFIN DOPE RHYME RHYME!

  8. Buggin Out! says:

My next comment is controversial, and even though I always clown on B.Dot’s ‘Living hip hop’, I really want your take on it B.Dot…

Do you think being a member of The Roots has held Black Thought back from being able to cement a legacy as one of the greatest rappers?

  9. Original Ty says:

One of the coldest to ever do it …… PERIOD.

@ Buggin Out! I’m obviously not B Dot but I think it has held him back in the obvious ways but on the other hand it’s allowed him to keep his mystique and that’s worth a lot. All of us feeling like he would have been one of the coldest solo artists of all time and him actually PROVING that are two different things. Being exclusively with the Roots has kept him from possibly proving that we’re wrong for thinking he’d be so cold alone. And honestly after Dilla passed, I can’t imagine a producer aside from possibly Kanye that would fit him like a glove on the boards. That’s my unsolicited opinion.

  10. Buggin Out! says:

@Original Ty. Thanks brother. Feedback appreciated. Please everyone chime in. This question has always Bugged Me Out (pun intended)!

  11. esteeminatti says:

I agree with Original Ty. I’ve always been a Black Thought fan. The group facet may have served as a hindrance to Thought being recognized as one of the GOATs. Some people may not be checking for THE ROOTS. Thought is a prolific MC, but, kids nowadays don’t have the discerning ear nor the attention span to dissect a BT stanza. Sort of a conundrum.

  12. Buggin Out! says:

@esteeminatti Yeah man… A sad state of affairs for hip hop.

  13. Rhino says:

Well Connected and Highly respected….The Legendary ROOTS crew.
I wish we could get a Black Thought/ DJ Drama sumthin sumthin….Philly where U at????

  14. sway-z says:

I don’t think the group thing hurt Black Thought anymore than it did 3 Stacks. Of course proper solo albums from both of them would be dope, and it probably prevents them (at least on my All-Time list) from being ahead of other artists with established solo catalogs over decades. But they’re still known as some of the best lyricists to ever come through, and neither one is hurting financially.

  15. so so feeling says:

I don’t want to say it has hurt him when you look at others i the same category as him. Take Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli, (i know there are way more to list but lets just stick with these), All of these MCs are very talented and gifted and all have at least 10+ years in the game. So they have perfected their style and can rap about just about anything. I say that to say this, they stayed true to themselves and didn’t let outside influences dictate their sound but this has also “held them back” because it’s not what the ‘mainstream’ wants to hear.
