  4. STINKMEANER says:

^^ QUIT – dude, stop acting like hip hop is “only for young people”

hip hop is music, only ignorant fools think there is an age limit to being able to create music. young people seem to think the world revolves (and the entertainment industry) revolves around them, but the truth is, most young people are just spending their parents money.

as an adult, i can tell you, i got money and i want to buy and listen to music that appeals to me as an adult man. i don’t want to listen to music made for 15 year old children.

please get the ageism out of hip hop, if there is a problem with age then why are all the BEST rappers in their 30s or 40s? there is no 20 year old GOAT, there is Jay and Eminem and Andre3k and all them dudes are grown adult men.

  13. Buggin Out! says:

THANK YOU STINKMEANER!!! You have just executed all the ignoramuses that can possibly enter this thread.

Jay-Z isn’t only the best artist we have in hip hop, he is quite possibly the best artist we have in music period.

While Kanye is screaming into microphones and throwing them on the ground,
Eminem is going AWOL for years at a time,
3Stacks has stopped rapping and only comes up for the occasional 16,
Madonna is showing her 54 year old titties,
Prince is wearing a seventies afro and musically, cheaply recycling his own sh*t, MJ is buried,
    D’angelo is… well D’angelo,
    Amy is buried,
Lauryn Hill is… well Lauryn Hill… AND FACING JAIL TIME.
Janet has never been the same since dating Jermaine Dupri… Harsh but true.
Mariah has never been the same since marrying Nick Cannon… Harsh but true.
    Beyonce excelled under Jay-Z’s umbrella.
Rihanna excelled under Jay-Z’s umbrella… ella. ay. ay. ay.

All this… AND JIGGA IS STILL THAT N*GGA!!!

Applaud our greats. Don’t try and cut them down. You’re jumping up a tree you cannot possibly reach!

  14. What’s interesting about hip hop is it’s now in it’s 4th decade and the true test of “fans” is upon us.

In classic rock, the legends are still cherished and sell out every tour when they come back out.
The Rolling Stones are flirty with being 70 and still selling out shows! Actually, the Rolling Stones are older than the judges on the Supreme Court! Yet fans of ALL AGES still support them.

It is the responsibility of the fans AND the media, including Rap Radar, to acknowledge the heroes/legends of hip hop for not only what they are doing today , but what they have done.
It may be time for someone to create a “classic hip hop” radio station. Think of all the artists that get overlooked and end up playing the free shows at Central Park’s summerstage while classic rock legends are selling out Stadiums in NYC!!!

We can not fault the youngins on here posting about Jay Z or Nas or Wu members etc, being “old” as most of hip hop’s focal point is on “what’s hot today” only.

LL Cool J came out with Chuck D for the Grammys and many people in the media, including this site, mocked them for being “outdated”. Sure, it would have been nice to see LL/Chuck break out some of the “classics”, but nonetheless we need to support our legends.

It always starts with “you” & if you’re tweeting/blogging/writing in a derogatory tone about some of our legends then you must realize that the stigma you’ve helped create will be attached to ALL ARTISTS who are older including YES, JAY Z , NAS, WU TANG, DRE , SNOOP ETC….

See people get the perception that rap is for young people because thas how it started… Now that all of those kids from back in the day are older who’s there voice for this culture ….

    1. B.Dot says:

@romo young “people because thas how it started..”
      ^^^
I mean, define “young people” Rakim and Kane were 20 years old when they first started.

Melly Mel was 21 with “the message”. The artist were just more mature then. In my eyes, they were adults

  18. it's the roc says:

    @B.Dot

Great point. You would think Pac had already lived two lives with the subjects he would touch on with such mastery. Same with Nas. Heck go listen to Shyheim on AKA The Rugged Child, he sounds 40! This influx of average to bad rappers has made it all about what they’re saying instead of how they’re saying it. Anybody can talk about a particular subject, but a select few can elaborate and pick out certain details and twist the words in a way to make it poetic and bring it to life.

But let me not sound old on here, turn up!

  19. @ Its The ROC
    Thanks for the compliment

What’s interesting is that the same kids who call Jay/Nas etc “old” don’t even realize that
    2 Chainz
    and
Rick Ross are in their mid 30’s!!!

  20. DK says:

I don’t have a problem with Jay-Z. I really don’t. He is easily one of the most consistent forces hip hop has seen, and his progressivess in both music and business while still representing where he started from is a notable detractor to the “product of your environment” argument many people use for rappers (and people in general) to excuse ignorance and recklessness.

I do, however, think the Jay-Z dickriding has been in serious overdrive since the first ‘Blueprint’ came out. This man could literally fart into a microphone for two and a half minutes at this point, give the recording a name, and thousands of people would swear by it like it’s the greatest piece of songwriting ever made. The truth of the matter is his musical output since leaving his pseudo-retirement has been lacking at best. More often than not, his subject matter is “I’m banging Beyonce and have more money than you.”

I’ll argue that this has nothing to do with age. Rap, contrary to popular belief, is NOT basketball. The cause is that Jay isn’t hungry anymore, and really doesn’t have much be needs to prove. So what the hell else is he going to talk about? Poverty and pain foster inspiration. Conflict fosters interesting narrative. I don’t know a man who wouldn’t want to switch places with Jay-Z. “The gift and the curse,” I believe he once called it.

Oh, and @P0is0nedk00la: there is a classic hip hop station. Backspin on XM 66. Good shit, dude.

  38. Bigswingr says:

U can’t school me bcuz I’m damn near Jay Z’s age. There’s nothing u can tell me about rap/Hip hop. Everyone has there own opinion and my is that Jay’s verses doesn’t have the same bite as they use too. Take that “Suit and Tie” verse, in my opinion it was garbage. Talking about his Wife and her Fam has nothing to do with the title of the song. Rappers/Mcs need to go back to delivering verses that match the song title.

  39. OmegaSun73 says:

@StinkMeaner I cant agree with you more, the problem with hip hip today is the subject matter stays the same. All you hear about is I’m fucking your I’m drinking this drink I’m driving this car and I’m wearing these clothes.Same shit all the time.

  40. sway-z says:

The thing about age and hip hop is, no artists really wants to retire or fall back. KRS, Rakim, Slick Rick, Kane, all them niggas would LOVE to be as relevant TODAY as they were before. The only reason they aren’t is because the dudes in the 90’s were coming with CLASSICS, and creating new styles with damn near every release. The late 80’s niggas SOUNDED old & outdated and the culture moved on.

You can’t tell me that many niggas came in the 00’s that sounded better or changed the style of music more than Jay, Nas, Em, 3 Stacks or any of those type dudes. So, until that happens, there’s no reason for them to go anywhere, they sound better than almost all the new cats so they’re still necessary, simple as that.

PERCEPTION IS A POWERFULL THING!! JAY Z IS PERCEIVED AS A GREAT BUT IF U LOOK AT HIS MUSIC SINCE THE BLACK ALBUM IT HAS NOT BEEN SO GREAT!!! HE BEEN RIDING THE KANYE WAVE

DUDE JUST BECAME A FATHER HE SHOULD FOCUS ON HIS KID AND HIS BUSINESESS!! LEAVE THE MUSIC ALONE!!
