A$AP Rocky On MTV Hottest MCs List

A$AP Rocky’s got a fuckin’ problem. While on Power 106 in L.A. he said he was upset about securing the eighth seed on MTV’s Hottest MCs list. Below is a transcript of why he felt he deserved the number one spot.

All my videos are shitting on any hip-hop video out there, let’s be honest. The reason why everyone is wearing gold again is because of your boy. Everybody’s wearing diamonds. I’m the one that who made the John Lennon shades with the glasses—everybody wearing it now, you see what’s going on now. C’mon, who brought gold teeth back? Let’s be honest…Honestly, I brought it back in a dramatic way. I made braids hot. But, let’s get off trends. Let’s get off trends. How about that? I’m the first artist who grew enough balls to say, “I listen to Geto Boys, Three 6 Mafia, Bone Thugs N Harmony, N.W.A. and Wu-Tang at the same damn time, what?!” And I’m influenced by all of them. What?!..But moving aside from the fact that I broke boundaries with not only that, but what either rapper is on the cover of Vogue? Forget trends, let’s get off trends. Lets back to the music. Who brought double time back? Who was rapping like Bone? Nobody. [Raps] Ok, whatever. [Raps] Who brought that flow out? I don’t even use it no more. [Raps]Everybody rapping like that., now y’all not even going to notice that? Its frustrating when I’m number eight. Don’t put me at all.

Clearly, Rocky doesn’t lack confidence. With a platinum top 10 single, and number one debut, he deserves to make the cut. But breaking boundaries? Cut. It. Out.  Diddy and Jay-Z both have Vogue covers. Gold will always shine—especially in the mouths of Southerners. As far as flows go, Z-Ro, Em, Busta, T.I., Ludacris, Bun B, Freddie Gibbs, Yelawolf and others utilize similar patterns. Remember folks, there’s nothing new under the sun. MTV’s list concludes this Thursday.

This list got everbody buggin 4real……..”Fuckin Ridiculous” – Kanye West

  2. True life says:

When it comes to trends. Him and Kanye are on another level. First is Kanye. Then A$AP Rocky. Like. No one even close to those two. Influence alone should have them higher than 7,8.

  3. Phyucku Dusumtin says:

Ya’ll did that to this nigga. Piping niggaz when they don’t deserve it. New niggaz aint did shit yet but swear they gods. None of the trends he talkin bout he set went nowhere but off the rap video set. Just cause them faggot ass rap niggaz chose to put different shit in the forefront like skinny jeans, skateboarding, and skirts dont mean the hood followed suit. Niggaz been rockin gold, gold teeth, and braids. Mufuckas been rappin like Bone since Bone was out. Mufuckas been using double time flow since forever. That nigga don’t even do it fluidly. I rather hear Z-Ro flow with it.

A couple of rap niggaz that’s on bit the flow wave he was using so now he swear he trendsettin out here. Nigga please. He had to get 3 niggaz who had big buzzes already to feature on his first single just to get his shit to bubble. So how the fuck can he be the hottest. The nerve of these niggaz. I wish they’d just focus on making better music and shut the fuck up.

  4. GTFO says:

People did bite his flow. He got a point.

  5. A$AP Truth says:

    He Played Himself

  6. Heartbreak says:

Asap cool but as far as high fashion and gold kanye been rapping and dressing like that

    @ Asap truth I agree with u

  11. E$CO says:

    @That Guy
    ^
You mustve been born in the 90s

  12. jobie says:

Kanye may be right with the wayje comment, when it comes to the MTV crowd, who hotter than Wayne. He’s still on everyone’s single and still making hits. No matter how bad the hip hop fans says his music is, those facts cannot be denied

  13. jobie says:

Oh and for rocky. He hot right now, but he doing nothing nobody else isn’t doing. But cool to see all his influences in his music.

  14. still best rite now!! says:

  19. poon poon jag says:

i bet he got his name from ti song
    fuck outta here

  20. MegaMind says:

He has a half a point about his influences….bc NO rapper give props to other shit besides the usual Jay, Nas, Big, Pac.

@BDot – you kinda prove his point by using the Jay & Puff as examples of HipHop artist that made it to men’s Vogue BUT those guys are cultural icons. WHO out of these new cats even gets that much acknowledgement from the fashionistas? And just because Theophilous London, Frank Ocean and whoever else stay at fashion shows don’t mean the brands are necessarily fkn with them.

Him and 2 Chainz did bring back the fashion style chains rappers wear todays…i.e. Versace, Chanel chains.

Even the double time rapping thing, he has a point.

Now with all that said, is he saying ANYTHING in his music? NO….BUT it’s somewhat enjoyable.

    peace

  21. WAYNE says:

waka FLOCKA PLIES been rockin’ gold tooth before this CLOWN. plus diddy and rozay came back wit dem gold chain gold rolly wit matching SHADES

Lets back to the music. Who brought double time back? Who was rapping like Bone? Nobody.

    ^^

uhh.. Eminem? This asap guy thinks everyone just copies him. paranoid delusion

  24. Devante says:

Wait he feels that he’s the best because he brought back a buch of trends that has been done before? C’mon son, if I was to start rapping with a tupac flow wearing big whites tees with a bucket cap would that make me an influence because I’m doing something no one does anymore?
ASAP and Joey Badass need to learn that the whole retro shit gets old fast. It’s all about what do you bring new to the table.

  25. poetic assasin says:

Next he gonna say he the only cat that can take Kanye’s shine. You not doing anything new man relax.

  26. Santos says:

kendrick wil lbe 1, he owned 2012; Asap can be happy with 8.

  27. The Nigga You Love To Hate says:

A$AP! SHOULD BE HIGHER..BUT FUCK THIS LIST..ITS DETERMINED ON A STAFF’S PERSPECTIVE?? WHAT A JOKE…THE REAL RAPPERS SHOULDNT BE BUTT-HURT OVER THIS SHIT LIST..NO JEEZY?..NO 50?..NO WIZ?..2010’S LIST DIDNT INCLUDE EMINEM AND HE SHUT DOWN THE WHOLE SUMMER THAT YEAR! FUCK MTV!

  28. Johnny Blackout says:

B.Dot you are so ignorant.. of course he broke boundaries… why are you doubting that? Yes southerners wear gold, but hes talking about the gold grills, which he brought back 2 years ago with his purple swag video. Your ignorance regarding ASAP Rocky just costed you a fan

  29. Rick Ross Tittie says:

ASAPs music is trash. He maid braids hot… nobody give a fuck bout that bitch boi. nigguhs music is just a fad and hopefully it will blow over soon cuz that shit sucks.

  30. tits says:

SHUT THE FUCK UP B.DOT YOU GREASY ASS CUNT FACED MOTHERLESS FUCK

  31. poetic assasin says:

    Braids? Pusha T?
    Gold, Tyga?

  32. DMVinyourchick says:

This nigga did set mad trends wasn’t nobody fuckin wit gold teeth again till this fool came out, tht shit had lost steam, now everybody back to givin Johnny dang bread to get molds, but he scised it, he didn’t even sound really upset about number 8 sounded kinda like forced emotion

  33. Foreign luccini says:

    *yawn* chill A$AP monky!!! Hahaha

  34. sway-z says:

His album was cool, but I don’t see nobody trying to dress, sound, or act like this nigga nowhere at all. Maybe some young Harlem dudes be on that, but I must’ve missed all that shit he talking about.

TBH, his whole style, from rapping to “fashion” is just a bunch of remixed shit from other regions & eras anyway, pump the brakes cousin…

  35. A says:

about the double time shit Tech N9ne is that god of that and been doing that since the 90’s you wrong bout that but everything else you right iguess

  36. poetic assasin says:

    Who is wearing gold teeth?

  37. ness says:

Kendrick is at the top right now so much better then this clown

  38. touchNwho says:

Fuckin Problems -his biggest single-, features 2 Chainz, Drake and kendrick lamar, nobody outside his fanbase cares about this nigga, real talk, Kanye been rocking gold for the last 3-4 years, double time flow? he brought it back? dont think so….

  39. DJ Semtex's Prothsetic says:

hating on asap huh eh bruh b.dot na i think its cool asap was killing for a while, im not sure about his album but i know his tape made him cool

  40. The Wise says:

These new cats think the deserve it. All cuz he brings shit back..how about inventing ur own style instead of sumbody fathering ur shitt

  41. Trippymane says:

@B. Dot lets be honest, you really are an A$AP hater

  42. 2 cents says:

THIS NIGGA SAID HE BROUGHT GOLD BACK? MAN LETS NOT EVEN TALK ABOUT THE OLD HEADS. TYGA WAS WEARING GOLD CHAINS IN VIDEOS BACK IN ’09. KENDRICK’S ROLEY CHAIN HE USED TO CLEAN WOTB ALCOHOL IN THE SINK WAS A GOLD CHAIN. NOBODY KNEW WHAT THE FUCK AN ASAP ROCKY WAS. THIS NIGGA CAME IN THE GAME RAPPING ABOUT FOREIGN DESIGNERS AND SUDDENLY HE’S A FASHION EXPERT. GTFOH

  43. mac DIESEL says:

CAN’T BELIEVE THESE NIGGAS ACTIN’ ALL AGGY OVER A MTV LIST!!!! THIS IS THE SAME MTV THAT DIDN’T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT BLACK MUSIC AND HIP-HOP UNTIL THEY SAW IT MAKIN’ $$$$$!!!! THEIR LIST IS AS CREDIBLE AS YN’S TRUTH SEGMENTS AND B.DOT’S OPINIONS!!!!

    ……HA!!!! ASAP’S WORLD!!!! SMH!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  44. Johnny Ryall says:

Thanks this reminds me I’m on E too, I have to stop at the station and gas myself up as well.

  45. Starfox64 says:

guy should be happy he was on the list even..

  46. LA says:

What the fuck does fashion have to do with rapping dope bars?
    Fucking lame.

  47. Kimberly King says:

Only Kendrick deserved the #1 spot

  48. EvenOdd says:

I don’t know anyone who even fucks with this dude. The only song I have heard is the “Fuckin Problem” song which sounds like a 2 chainz song to me. Him and Kanye must be on that stuff…they should be happy their wack asses even made the fucking list. #realtalk

  49. eastpointvet says:

i think his comments directed at folks on this list. he def should be higher than 8 i mean the guy album leaked a month early and still debuted at number 1. this is hottest mcs and he should be higher just like future should be way higher. i think they give a bigger curve to whats popping exactly at the time of when they do the round table so if they did this when rocky album dropped in jan then his placement would probably be different.

  50. thatkidlerix says:

This is why I don’t listen to rappers under 25. SMH

  51. Eddie says:

I believe rap will be gone in 10 years I love hip hop im a 80’s baby but rap is getting how can I say this nicely “dull” rappers can talk about fashion and hoes but scared to talk about issues in our country and communities

  52. LikeJordan45 says:

    B. Dot…you’re a fucking lame. Rocky made some great points and for you to dismiss his Vogue placement because Jay fucking Z and P fucking Diddy were on it first is ridiculous, do you hear the company you just included him in!?

Rocky definitely completely changed the style of hip hop, stop fronting MAD niggas jacked the flow, and his strong sales even though his album leaked a month early just go to show how huge son’s buzz is.

RESPECT DUE…wouldn’t make him #1 but definitely higher than Sean who basically only dropped a mixtape and a few hot guest verses.

  53. LikeJordan45 says:

Funny how niggas bring up others who do what Rocky does (gold teeth, excessive leather, double-time flow) but stop saying who else has DONE it who BROUGHT IT BACK? MADE IT POPULAR AGAIN?

You niggas playing yourselves if you don’t hear Rocky’s flow in other niggas songs or think because cats like Plies has a few gold teeth he made gold grills hot again. TYGA BROUGHT GOLD BACK!?

    Playing yourselves.

  54. B.Dot says:

    @LikeJordan45 MADE IT POPULAR AGAIN?
    ^
How can you make something popular again if it never went away?

  55. LIQUORSTOREMAN says:

THIS CLOWN EVEN WENT AS FAR AS TO SAY THAT HE STARTED THE TREND OF WEARING RIPS IN YER JEANS. LIKE THE “SALT N PEPA- IT’S YOUR THING” VIDEO NEVER HAPPENED. SMH. YOU NEW MOLLY POPPIN’ HOMO THUGS ARE DELUSIONAL.

  56. LikeJordan45 says:

    I shouldn’t have to explain this @ B. Dot

As an example, when the Dolphins popularized the Wild Cat offense they didn’t invent a new play-style they revitalized an old one and re-popularized it’s use in the NFL.

It was around, simply wasn’t being utilized, it takes vision/talent to revamp something that worked previously, is no longer prevalent, and give it new life.

Like you said nothing new under the sun…it’s all about how you do it.

    1. B.Dot says:

U can’t popularize something that never went away.

People were putting gold in their mouth before and will continue after ASAP. I said he belongs on the list. His placement is fair. But his reasons for being number one are ridiculous.

  57. LIQUORSTOREMAN says:

SMH @ DUDE CLAIMING THAT HE STARTED THE TREND OF ROCKING RIPS IN THE JEANS, LIKE SALT N PEPA’S “ITS YOUR THING” VIDEO NEVER HAPPENED. YOU LIL COCKY SKIRT ROCKIN HOMO THUGS NEED TO QUIT THAT. FOR REAL.

  58. LikeJordan45 says:

Did Kanye invent soul samples? Did T Pain create autotune?

These things never went away, the answer is no but for the most part we credit those cats with influencing the masses to follow suit, making it popular (even if it’s been done for years).

How is Hov popularizing button ups not the same as Rocky popularizing gold grills? Ye wore button ups before him but Jay made it POPULAR…influence is a huge factor in an artist’s “hotness”

    1. B.Dot says:

Did Kanye invent soul samples? Did T Pain create autotune?
      ^
No one says Ye invented so Soul samples. He and Just did it the best. T-Pain used Auto-Tune as his shtick. But dont forget Roger Troutman.

How is Hov popularizing button ups not the same as Rocky popularizing gold grills?
      ^
It wasnt popular in the hip-hop community ti wear buttons up until Jay-Z said so on “Change Clothes”. People (esp, in NY) aren’t running to the jeweler for gold grills because of ASAP Rocky. stop it.

  59. Respect says:

This nigga is a dress wearin joke

  60. THE MAJESTIC NIGLET says:

did this nigga jus say he made braids hot? lmao

  61. eastpointvet says:

just because paul wall never stopped wearing gold doesnt mean somebody else cant come and popularize something. because it exist doesnt mean its at the forefront of popular culture. Gold is hot again and its a subset of Rocky and James piggybacking the Gold revolution. Same with the double time flow if Bone does it and and other rappers who not exactly popular or Hot right now then somebody who is makes it part of the flow and other popular rappers start using it again then again that person is a trend setter. Button up shirts existed since the 1800’s, would you say jay doesnt get the credit for having people put them back on when he made his stance on Jerseys? i wouldnt put him as number 1 but his points are more valid than you are dismissing.

  62. eastpointvet says:

lol LikeJordan45 i just spend all that time typing up a response and hit send and you damn near said what i said thats funny lol.

  63. LikeJordan45 says:

I said they didn’t invent or create them, point being that their innovation lead to the re-popularization of those techniques.

You can definitely popularize something that’s always been around.

and word @ eastpointvet valid points *daps*

  64. Deebo says:

    Thank you B. Dot

Nobody is trying to be like this nigga. He may have peeped a couple rappers swiping lil shit here and there from him after he used it but rappers and everyday niggaz are not the same. I see that nigga aint take credit for rocking dresses and skirts though. Just because gold grills, gold jewelry, and braids aint been in the forefront of rap imagery like they have been in the past don’t mean they went nowhere.

If Rocky is that hot, why did he need 2 Chainz, Kendrick, AND Drake all to be on his first single for it to bubble? But overall, his comments just signify that alot of these rappers and so-called rap fans are caught up in the wrong shit. Popularity, fashion, etc. Niggaz sound & act like hoes nowadays.

I spit the vo-cab/ While most fags go grab notepads/ And brag about they bitch Coach bag – Sean Price (c) 1996

Rappers…/Get on the mic talkin bout cars and clothes/ Soundin’ like hoes – Common (c)1995

  65. alphs says:

Kendrick made me stop listening to the other rappers, Damn this king !

  66. Guap says:

    BASEDGOD #1 MC !!!!!!!!

  67. SMH says:

This is what happens when yall gas these niggas like yall do

  68. acidrap says:

Fuck this weak ass nigga. This nigga so delusional its sad. Yeah, NOBODY was wearin gold, diamonds, listenin to Three6 before hime lol! Where that nigga that shootin at Montana fans at, I got someone else for him to aim for !

  69. Marko V says:

ASAP album still debuted at no.1 despite it leaking way early. If that’s not a testament to a higher degree of hotness than lets get a clear understanding if wat hotness is.
    @remarkible1

  70. Just Visiting says:

    A few observations:

    1. It’s disappointing to see humility lost with this guy, he fell right into the trap of ego and entitlement. He was’t worried about any acclaim or rewards when he was trying to get on, BUT again success, fame, and money will shift one’s desires and intent.

    2. How many times do we hear “I’m here for creative contribution to the culture only, f#ck album sales, industry politics, sacrificing artist integrity, etc.” THEN as soon as a certain level of success and exposure is reached, the conversations changed to what they haven’t been acknowledged for, filled with complaining and over top temper tantrums.

    3. This is why the product/brand life cycle of new hip hop artists will last no more than 3 years or two albums if they’re lucky. It took artists from the 80’s and 90’s to put in years of work (selling gold and platinum mind you) to reach the coveted space that most of the new artists feel they deserve to be in after a little wave of trends, hype, and a few acknowledgements.

    4. Quality of music will always trump trendsetting and hype

  71. 200mph says:

50 cent had -In the club, Jay z had -Hardknock life, Snoop had -Gin & juice, Rick ross had “Hustlin”, Eminem had -My name is, Lil wayne had -A mill, Nas had -It aint hard to tell,, Dmx had -Ruff Ryderz anthem, Drake had -Best i ever had……. all these guys didnt need a ton of features on their first big singles too blow up..unlike ASAP rocky. He needs to be thankful hes even on the list

  72. 200mph says:

    p.s. Kendrick had -Swimming Pools

  73. Scrilla says:

    JEEZY #1 HOTTEST MC!!”

  78. […] Add another one to the list of MCs unhappy with MTV’s results. This afternoon Pusha called up DJ Semtex. Hell hath no fury like a rapper scorned. […]
