I thought this project was solid. I really don’t see the comparison with The Weeknd and don’t understand why his name is even being brought up. This is a whole different vibe from The Weeknd and honestly I’m looking forward to more music from PARTYNEXTDOOR. I give it a 4.5/5.
Party Next Door exists in your world right now only because The Weeknd couldn’t keep his mouth shut. He wouldn’t take any direction, not even from Drake or 40. He has stated on more than one occasion that Michael Jackson was really nothing special; that his voice is better. Ultimately, he felt that he was an irreplaceable part of the team…so he got replaced. His successor, PartyNextDoor, is solid and what he does creatively over the beats on this tape is nothing if not pleasant and easy to listen to. But, let’s be honest…it’s hard to drop the ball on a 40 beat. The Isley brothers could rap over a 40 beat. People should realize that 40 has the most sought-after sound in the hip hop/r&b production game, and that that fame is a direct result of, and stands as a testament to the unprecedented sound that 40 brought to his masterwork with Drake, SoFarGone. They’re not copying anyone but themselves, touching back to a sound that was created in the OVO camp to begin with. If anything, this tape says to me that, although there will always be many imitators, there can only be one original…one individual who truly rises above the state of his craft.
