Macklemore Talks Grammy Wins & Kendrick On Hot 97

56th GRAMMY Awards - Press Room

Grammy Family.

Hours after racking up four Grammy Awards, Hot 97 called Macklemore this morning to speak on his wins and Kendrick Lamar’s snub. Following the ceremony, Mack shared his text message to Kendrick via Instagram.

Biases and preferences aside, the fact that both artists were nominated in non-rap categories is a victory in itself. And in case you’re keeping score, it’s been a decade since two hip-hop albums were nominated for Album Of The Year. Should Kendrick have won Best Rap Album? Perhaps. good kid, m.A.A.d City was remarkable. But on the flip-side, Macklemore shouldn’t feel guilty nor make any apologies for winning. The Heist was an independent release that spawned monstrous singles. Hell, even ScHoolBoy got his first platinum plaque for their collaboration, “White Walls”. The next time the subject of “white privilege” is raised, ask Action Bronson, Asher Roth, Machine Gun Kelly, Rittz, Yelawolf, Mac Miller, Caskey, Chris Webby or Hoodie Allen what happened to their nominations. Better luck next year.

Machine gun kelly, asher Roth and mac miller are all probably more embraced by blacks. The Grammy don’t mean anything in rap. Will Smith has a Grammy it’s pop. Macklemore is a pop artist. Tupac, Kane, Rakim, Nas, where they Grammy at

    • B.Dot

@KEith McDaniel “The Grammy don’t mean anything in rap” only to ones that don’t have any.

    • yorapper

Yeah I see tons of black kids in the hood bumping that new Asher Roth!!!

      • Hussle

        LOL sarcasm

      • Keith McDaniel

My point is I never heard a Macklemore song on a urban radio station while I have heard Roth mgk, and mac miller songs on rap radio. I NEVER HEARD ANYONE IN MY BLACK LISTENING TO MACKLEMORE, WHILE THE OTHERS I HAVE

        • yorapper

Macklemore gets played on Hot 97.

          • Keith McDaniel

All of Macklemore hits got the majority of their spins on pop radio

          • yorapper

So black people don’t listen to pop? Is there a white only radio dial and a black only radio dial? Self imposed radio segregation. Good music defies genre and more importantly race. Music is what brings us together. #bless

          • Keith McDaniel

He won in the RAP categories, not pop. Flo rida corny too color has nothing to do with it

          • Keith McDaniel

And another thing I guarantee no black person voted for Macklemore for rap album of the year. It’s just not possible

    • billionaire16

agreed the grammys have always disrespected hip hop

  • jaysanon

    That’s a REAL man!

  • areal1

  • AP

Macklemore shouldn’t feel guilty… The people who should feel guilty are guys like B Dot who have a platform to speak out against this result and don’t

    • yorapper

The irony is he is actually speaking out in defending Macklemore.

    • LuckyP757

No one’s losing sleep over the Emmy’s but it is fun to see white boys like you feel like something got accomplished when macklemore won. On a side note, grow up. Your act is getting old, change it up, how many years you been trolling this site “bro”? You haven’t been entertaining for years, you’re played out. I cant imagine that anyone livig in the same united states i live in could see anything in out mainstream entertainment world that is free from any form of racial issue. macklemore sold that many albums in part because of his race. the same way rick ross’s race allows his persona to be accepted. it goes both ways. macklemore makes incredible music, justifying your argument with a list of subpar white rappers does not prove your point.
eminem would not be eminem if he was black, yes hed still be an incredible lyricist but his crossover and mainstream appeal are greatly boosted by the color of his slin. bstop junping up to immediately defend the white man who has more than enough supprt defense and backing, reality is realty is reality unfortuneately the grammy has repeatedly over looked and been anything less than attentive to the most popular genre of music in the world. race has nothing to do with that either?? maklemore makes great music nd. one hell of an album., no doubt but the issue isnt him its more the treatment of pur culture by the grammys. lets continue to champion our own cture irregardless of their validations.

    • asani baki

Macklemore is trash from an objective point of view

  • jay

pardon the typos, im on my phone

  • Jav

Does it surprise me that songs like Thrift Shop, Can’t Hold Us, Same Love and White walls all cracked the top 40? NO

Yes make the argument about him being an indie artist but he wasn’t the one to break the barrier between independent artistry and commercial success.

We saw artists like Mac Miller do it, the only differences is Macklemore was able to sell it to a broader demographic.

On the flip side, Kendrick cracked the top 40 with songs like Swimming Pools, Poetic Justice and Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe.

That’s what I call breaking a barrier and deserving a being recognized.

Kendrick’s album stood for the whole genre of rap and we are angered not because of who won but because of who didn’t win.

  • RAAAAAAAANDY!!!!

    B. Dot, I agree with you that Macklemore is nice. I thought he should have won for rap song and best new artist, but not rap album. Your site stated that GKMC was a superior album to the “The Heist” in your end of the year review for 2012. Pretty much all of the Hip-Hop industry, to include the artists and the media, agrees with the opinion of your site. Does it not frustrate you that your opinions and the rest of the cultures was not recognized by the Grammy committee? If I dedicated my time, energy and passion to something and was told by a group of people who have generally no knowledge, understanding, or love that essentially what I stand and believe doesn’t matter, I would be extremely frustrated. The Grammys even knew that this would happen, that’s why there are reports that committee considered not nominating Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for that award. This was the most disheartening event I have ever seen in the past 25 years I have been a HIp-Hop fan, aside for the tragic deaths of Eazy, Pac, BIG and Pun. A young man created a piece of work that gave insight to the dangers that many decent minority citizens face on a daily basis living in an urban environment that was different from all other projects done before it. It did not have any singles that many would consider commercially viable and it still went platinum. It met all the requirements critically and commercially and it lost. Do you not feel in anyway frustrated by that fact?

  • yorapper

This is so not hip hop! How can they give a grammy to an artist that is not singed to a major label? Indepedent artists that don’t have hip hop co-signs and million dollar marketing budgets shouldn’t be winning rap grammys. Hip hop isn’t about the underdog indie struggle! Jimmy Iovine and the Illiminati missed the ball on this one!!

    • badizzle

A lot of people don’t understand how the Grammys work and are judged. Its the riaa, an association of people who went to school for music. So you may have a “stuffy” music engineer with a degree that has to vote on the hip hop category and doesn’t listen or know how to critique hip hop and furthermore who has never heard of Kendrick. But, has heard of macklemore because of all the radio airplay. The example I give is when people go to the polls to vote and they don’t know all the candidates, they just vote on whoever because they don’t know. Lol…..the riaa votes well on rock, jazz, and classical because those forms of music are the same AND that’s what you study in music 101 in school, not hip hop.

  • Dashing28

Macklemore was gracious in acknowledging that he shouldn’t have won. Props to him for that. He worked his ass off to make The Heist and it’s a good album

B.Dot, it’s not about race per se (although denying that it has an impact is ridiculous as well) it’s about 1) a watered down, poppified version of hip hop that doesn’t represent the culture and 2) the historical ramifications of the art that DOES represent the culture effectively being written out of history. I’m not suggesting that the Grammy’s are everything, but the most prestigious music award that can be given to a musician is a Grammy. And the fact that Kendrick didn’t receive 1 and Macklemore got 4 is a problem.

It’s only further highlighted by the historical context. This is not an anomaly. As much as folks were upset, they weren’t surprised. The majority of the genre’s classic albums have not been recognized. Whether it was because rap was not deemed real music and thus not given a category or now where the most critically acclaimed music that is representative of the culture is either not nominated or given nominations, but never winning (i.e. Nas, Biggie, 2Pac Kendrick, etc).

I understand B. Dot’s relationship with Macklemore. He was one of the early spokesman and has been repping him before all of the success. I also salute Macklemore’s independent hustle and respect what he’s accomplished. He has no reason to feel guilty for seeing his hard work rewarded. However, the purveyors of the culture(i.e. journalists like B.Dot) that have the loudest voices should be the ones to speak out against what is a pattern of disrespect to the culture.

Dr Dre, arguably the greatest rap producer of all time, has 6 Grammys. 0 of them are with NWA. 0 of them are with Snoop. 0 are for 50 Cent’s work. 0 with Kendrick. He has 1 solo and 5 with Eminem (including “Crack a Bottle” and Relape). 50 Cent’s only Grammy by the way is for a featured verse on “Crack a Bottle”

    Rappers with no Grammys
    RUN DMC
    NWA
    Wu Tang
    Scarface
    Nas
    Public Enemy
    DMX
    2Pac
    Biggie
    KRS 1
    Slick Rick
    Kendrick Lamar

Naughty by Nature’s Poverty’s Paradise, which no one remembers, won the first Best Rap album Grammy beating out 2 Pac’s Me Against the World and De La Soul. Skee Lo was also nominated that year! And lest you think that was a bad year for hip hop, that was 1996! Reasonable Doubt, It Was Written, Hell on Earth, Ridin Dirty, The Coming, all came out that year.

B.Dot, minimizing the significance of this pattern tells me that you’re not on your job. Especially by diverting this issue to solely about race. I get that Macklemore’s your boy, but it’s bigger than that. The shit’s not going to change until folks with a platform say and do something about it. And as much as we commenters tweet and write about it, it’s not going to have the impact that a “Rap Radar” or “Hot 97″ and others will have..XXL, the Source(assuming they’re still relevant), Complex or whoever needs to write about this to highlight it.

    • wow

Yo man… this was a great comment… Remember the album is called “The Heist” there is a lot happening here.

    • Theodore Pendergrass

Execellent reply my man i second that emotion.

    • IV

      Incredible.

    • Nathaniel

something about him coming out saying kendrick got robbed, and screenshotting his text conversations with kendrick seems so disingenuous to me. contrived. as he sent the text already planning to use it as propaganda as the “nice white guy who agrees with black people” angle. you know, the so-called white liberal who is the friend of the negro. i ain’t mad at macklemore, i feel like you feel. it’s the historical ramifications that a journalist that is SUPPOSED to be our voice, should be honing in on, but again… B.Dot is self-serving. and he ain’t studying.

and i’ll keep saying that macklemore is NOT ‘independent’ by the definition we understand it, in hip hop, when we say it. so i can’t give him mac miller type props. we gotta do our research and learn just how he climbed the ladder.

      • Dashing28

Agree that there was definitely something contrived about his response, but he knew to expect the backlash and predicted as much well before he won so I think it’s safe to assume that his response was premeditated. Otherwise why make it so public? But then again, it’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation and if he erred on the side of repping Kendrick I’m not mad about it…

Yeah, the real issue comes from the folks that should be the voices of the culture who aren’t representing for us. It feels like the hip hop journalists would rather be the cool guys hanging out with the stars than thinking critically about the impact that these events have. I respect Elliott Wilson, but if he’s the “GOAT of hip hop journalism” then we have problems.

        • RAAAAAAAANDY!!!!

          You’re on point.

        • Kingly_Caracter

He’s been making these type of “Apologies” and openly addresses his “leverage” as a pro gay-white man. I see it as humility and humbleness tho.

          • Dashing28

I don’t disagree. That humility just happens to also be self-serving…

          • Kingly_Caracter

            I can’t deny that…

        • Nathaniel

          damn i miss dream hampton.

      • zb

        oh stfu already

    • Limb0

this is the most interesting thing I’ve read on rapradar

    • Elproblemo Djblast

very much agree there has to be something we need to do to get our voice heard to the grammy, its seems some well deserve hip hop artist only get a grammy when they work with white artist, case in point jay won with collab with justin, and another thing i notice every time there is a white person in the best rap category the white person always wins except for the year 07 when late registration won over encore which i believe they got that right. I think its the only time they got it right, although i think eminem is a great rapper, in my opinion, out of the 5 grammy he won he only should of gotten 2 for MMLP & Eminem show, but if you look at the albums he was against its no wonder he won all 5 shit even relapse got a grammy to me that was his worse one he even said it himself.

    • Real Dope Brother

This is why to hip hop the Grammy Awards are irrelevant. No where in the history of Hip Hop will the amount of Grammy Awards an artist has won or has not won be a testament to their contribution, value, or impact to our culture. The Emmy’s have worked hard to prove that their opinion on hip hop music will hold no relevance at any point which in the future will severely diminish the value that any artist of any genre hold for this award.

    • yorapper

But B.Dot is using his platform..to defend Macklemore from the typical critisims we all knew would be on rap radar today.

Maybe B.Dot’s motive is to inspire rappers to start making songs that appeal to everyone and not just guys that go to Atlanta strip clubs, not just guys that are in a LA gang, not just guys that sell crack.

      • Sina Mailer Daemon Djavadkhani

        Good points!

      • TN

Why would anyone care about videos today? And how should Kendrick talk about social issues? He’s from Compton and is reporting what he’s seeing without debasing it or glorifying it. The implication of your post is that you’re tired of rappers from the streets talking about the streets. Sorry, but the problems still exist. And the day that Ryan Lewis is a better producer than Dr. Dre is the day I stop listening to rap.

        • yorapper

“Why would anyone care about videos today?”

Ah well the only way for independent artist to gain traction is by making videos on youtube. I’m not sure if you think you can just come out with a mixtape and be instantly put on radio stations around the world. It is through youtube that unsigned artists blow up. That’s why Macklemore has had to make great videos to gain attention. Whearas Kendrick could just have Interscope pay millions for national radio/video exposure.

Kendrick did talk about the social issues in Compton on his album. His album was about that and he did it in a ground breaking way. However, his songs/videos by themselves didn’t connect with most people, just a select group (nothing wrong with this, this is probably better for Kendrick anyway btw).

And Ryan Lewis’ production is sounding much more inspired than Dr. Dre’s recent production. Maybe he should stop making headphones and focus on making music.

          • TN

You said the key word: independent. Kendrick’s not an independent rapper, Macklemore is. Therefore, it goes without saying that Macklemore has more to gain/lose from putting his creative input towards video production as opposed to music, which is what Kendrick does. I don’t expect rappers to be great video directors. We can agree to disagree on Ryan Lewis.

      • Picasso Je Suis

What else do you expect a nigghua from the streetz to talk about other than street shit, living life in white suburban areas. The only people who ask for something different is people who don’t live in that environment every day

    • Haann

You my friend win the award for biggest kendrick lamar groupie of all time. Goddam man wipe your chin you have some of kendricks pubic hairs hanging off of it. Macklemore won cause mainstream wise his album had a bigger impact not cause it was the best rap. everyone knows the grammys doesnt have the best hip hop knowledge. and no the grammy committe will not change there ways because of Rap radar or hot97 they have no idea what those outlets are. Stop being so ass hurt over ever kendrick loss and just realize its not that serious

      • McGlock

        relax sheesh

    • Nic Aych

“1)” and “2)” are mirror statements. saying the same thing

    • Sam Robilotta

Lol it’s not a problem, it’s your opinion. So we should have Chief Keef represent the ‘culture’ and “increase the murder rate”. The culture also has been about promoting violence from the beginning. Kendrick does a good job of not doing that for the most part, but saying Macklemore isn’t in the culture is bullshit. Listen to his old raps. He does nothing but give the greats props. You think most of your rappers keepin it real would give a txt like that? There were a lot of good songs on Macklemore CD that wasn’t “POP”. At the end of the day he has to make money and chose the pop songs to get out there as an independent artist. I’m a fan of both, I think still saying that, Macklemore deserved it. You can’t put him in any other category but hip hop, anything else would be comical.

Oh and Wizard of Oz lost best picture to Sound of Music. Just sayin, two great cds come out in the same year one was bound to come up short. Still both sick cds.

      • Dashing28

Bringing up Chief Keef is a complete diversion. He wasn’t nominated. No one’s advocating for him so why bring him up? Why bring up promoting violence at all? None of the rap albums nominated promoted violence. GKMC very clearly shows the horrors of violence and speaks on it from a perspective of someone who grew up in that environment.

I made a point to give Macklemore props, for his music and his comment after winning the award. I also never said he wasn’t hip hop. His album is good. Is it great? Or a classic? In my opinion, no. And GKMC IS, in my opinion. Yes, those things are my opinion.

But if you re-read what I wrote, it’s less about Macklemore and more about a history of the greatest rappers and rap albums of all time not being recognized by the Grammy’s. That is a clear pattern. That’s NOT opinion. That’s fact. If you compiled a list of those considered the best rappers of all time (Biggie, Nas, Pac, Rakim, Kane, KRS 1 Scarface etc.) and the best rap albums of all time (The Chronic, Ready to Die, Doggystyle, All Eyes on Me, Blueprint, Illmatic, Midnight Marauders, Moment of Truth, Straight Outta Compton, 36 Chambers and so on and so on) most of those rappers haven’t won Grammys and most of those albums did not win (or weren’t even nominated) for best rap album.

That IS a problem, and that is my point…

    • TN

      You were completely on point.

  • Damian Marshall

I haven’t even heard the heist, and last night i heard that same sex song for the first time. So it’s really hard for me to get mad. All i know is when GKMC Came out i bumped it 4 months straight.

  • Kris Janvier

macklemore just explained that the people who works for the grammy committee or the music industry get to vote for the grammys. macklemore was one of them. when he had the ballot, he realized that he was voting for the genres that they’re unfamiliar with. that’s how Kendrick got robbed because he wasn’t more recognizable like Macklemore is. Although kendrick had a great album, his hits aren’t big enough like macklemore. therefore, macklemore swept the whole rap category due to his popularity in the industry, due to how successful his hits are.

  • JRLA

Congratulations Macklemore on helping to elevate Hip-Hop to a much higher level. I believe this uproar, which has been brewing for months, is based on race. Hip-Hop has an issue with white rappers. Eminem, pre-MMLP, was considered the new Vanilla Ice, or an Elvis robber baron. But just like Eminem, Macklemore has a very underground Hip-Hop background. So to say he isn’t Hip-Hop is just pure ignorance and boarders on racism. Macklemore is better than many one syllable MCs to whom, somehow, are considered Hip-Hop. Its a sad day when we are willing to embrace The Migos but decry someone as talented as Macklemore. I don’t see a difference between what Nelly did and what Macklemore is doing, yet, no one has decried Nelly as not being Hip-Hop. Fickle, non-purchasing, Hip-Hop fans!

    • Real Dope Brother

Where you been at? Nelly been attacked for not being hip hop enough. Nelly even addressed it on his song #1. Get with the program, the Grammy Awards is not something important to the hip hop culture. Led Zeppelin just got their first Grammy this year. Rakim, Nas, Dr. Dre, 2pac, and Big never got Grammy Awards for best album and it doesn’t make any rapper white or black better than them. Macklemore winning just confirms how out of touch and irrelevant the Grammy Awards are and have been.

    • Trill Cosby

you’re off topic, nobody’s saying macklemore’s not good.
his album just wasn’t better than kendrick’s. period.

    • asani baki

      Macklemore is trash…

  • Nathaniel

just because macklemore raps doesn’t mean his win is a win for hip hop. and that white privilege comment is no different from trying to argue something like “ask poor whites in trailer parks where their high paying job is.” it’s baseless.

  • Goose

Why is anyone surprised? Grammy’s have been irrelevant since wu-tang got snubbed in ’97. I don’t know why fans still let the grammy’s hold any weight in the culture.

  • Real Dope Brother

White people really feeling themselves and the Grammy Awards. Let’s be honest, the Grammy’s don’t mean a thing to hip hop, never have and never will. Vanilla Ice got a Grammy. Puffys Album No Way Out beat out Life After Death for a Grammy. Tupac never got a Grammy. Illmatic, Doggy Style, and Aquemini never got Grammy Awards. We stopped caring about the Grammy awards in the 90s. White people don’t have to apologize and feel guilty for winning a hip hop award at the American Music Awards or the Grammy’s. Its not like these awards factor into anyone’s top 5 Dead or Alive List.

  • Nathaniel

b.dot can’t separate music he enjoys from the larger context. his entire position in hip hop journalism is self-serving. his only agenda is his own, not ‘the culture’ nor ‘the people’ out of which the culture spawns and finds its foundation. he (like others) is always trying to separate the two, but you can’t. race, politics, socioeconomics, AMERICA shaped and shapes rap music, period. you can’t discuss our music without discussing all these things, too. they’re NOT independent of one another. that’s why for rap radar to focus on music and never incorporate what’s going on with the people i.e. things relevant to black people in america, never made sense. i know, they don’t want to exclude nor alienate anyone, but we’ve been alienated and excluded since we’ve been here. if no one else wants to hold us down, we’ve got to for Gods sakes.

    • THE REAL mac DIESEL

B.DOT IS NOTHING MORE THAN AN INDUSTRY MASCOT AND PAWN!!!! HECK, A FUCKIN’ BUTLER!!!! HE MAKES NO IMPACT WHEN IT COMES TO THE CULTURE!!!! ALL HE’S GONNA DO IS GLOAT ALL WEEK ON HIS TWITTER PAGE SAYING “I WAS THE FIRST TO COSIGN MACKLEMORE”!!!! SAME WHEN HE COSIGNED KENDRICK!!!! HE HAS ZERO INTEGRITY AND GETS BARKED AT BY LIGHT SKINNED DUDES WITH BEARDS ON RADIO STATION INTERVIEWS!!!! HE’S JUST ANOTHER SELF SERVING NEGRO “JOURNALINIST” WITH A TARNISHED RESUME!!!! FUCK THAT NIGGA!!!!
      DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  • C

Nas said it best. Hip hop is dead. smh..

  • Naz

There needs to be a serious conversation about adding a Rap and Alternative Rap category. Both were tremendous projects in there own right, but in terms of what traditional rap is Kendrick represents that, while Macklemore represent a hybrid mix of what rap has become.

In fairness, it’s not like any other dude or group can’t go get a live band, develop a good stage show, create a unique sound, and make some GOOD f*cking music!! Some nggz are just lazy and want to play the race card when they need to put the work in & go get it!

    • Dashing28

A serious case could be made to have 2 categories for rap:

      1. Best Pop Rap Album (Macklemore, Black Eyed Peas, Pitbull, Flo Rida)
      2. Best Urban/Traditonal Rap album (Kendrick, Nas, Jay Z, The Roots, etc)

They have separate categories for jazz, rock, R&B. Then each artist/label could ask for an album to be submitted to one of the 2 categories, similar to the Oscars and Emmy’s.

Again, these are the kinds of things the representatives of the culture are supposed to be speaking on.

  • billionaire16

Once again the grammys are out of touch. Macklemore I salute for being honest but he really didn’t have to do it. My biggest beef is the cut away from the awesome performance of Kendrick and Imagine Dragon to wack ass country performance

  • ymcmbovoxommgcteisdownwitopp

Macklemore did have one of the best rap albums

  • brza

really wanted Hip Hip to win this one but the powers that be had other plans Kendrick is still a winner IMO gkmc is a timeless album

  • ymcmbovoxommgcteisdownwitopp

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis made one of the best RAP albums of the year. Here’s why.

    1. True it did get pop buzz and mass appeal but that’s just a result of making a project people can connect to, just like A-Milli by Lil Wayne, it was different and connected.

    2. At no part did Macklemore not have well thought out bars you have to respect nor did Ryan Lewis not have a tailor made beat to back him up.

    3. Not only did he RAP well he also made a cultural impact by putting out singles about subjects no other rapper would dare touch like equal rights and gay marriage.

    4. Mack & Ryan have NO major backing. No co-sign from Jay-Z, no YMCMB on their lower back. They had a vision to tell their story of their journey and they did it their way.

    5. They did not land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on them. People are not upset that they are white but that the more blacker album didn’t win. Hip-Hop is evolving.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis deserved everything they got if not more. It’s not robbery, it’s hard work being acknowledged and patience paying off.

    • asani baki

it was a mediocre albuim, it will never be remembered as a classic like gkmc. all that shit proves that gkmc should have won (like artists are saying)

  • PolarBearsToenails

I don’t understand why anyone gives a damn what the Grammys say because they showed long ago they have no idea what they’re talking about, and I do think they’ve shown some pretty egregious racial bias over the years. But I understand why people in hip-hop are upset about this. GKMC deserved the award and anybody who understands rap will not argue this.

But c’mon – you want to complain about Macklemore being “poppy”? Yes it appeals to a wide audience but it’s not that cookie cutter pop shit that A LOT of rappers do. It’s actually original shit, even if he’s not talking hard or talking down on women. I just think it’s funny that people wanna cry about going pop when a white guy does it successfully, but just look the other way when Wayne, Fat Joe, Wiz, Nicki sell their souls to grow their white audience

  • oneloveonebeing

what else do you want the man to say…

  • Kingly_Caracter

Firstly, if I’m ever in need of “Salt” to season my food…I shall return to this post.

Men lie women lie numbers don’t. Point blank. These dudes put in work. I agree this isn’t your usual “Rap” style (relevant to the culture). But seriously…we gotta ask our selves who really destroyed it? Us or “them”… I see nothing but Molly talk, twerking, and drugs in a long line, one after the other. Quite frankly this nigga won to me because he dared to speak about something else for once. Regardless if you are comfortable with the topics or not.

Then on top of all of that, we neglect our “Deserving artists” by never actually purchasing their products. AKA. “The black business mentality”…We always end up at the “China-mans” store, and wonder why “we” all are broke and struggling.

    • Dashing28

Your point would have more validity if we were comparing macklemore to Migos or YMCMB or MMG, but it doesn’t hold much water when you compare him to Kendrick, a “deserving artist” who had a platinum album and platinum single and who’s album actually had a lot to say.

      • Kingly_Caracter

You are right kendrick did deserve recognition. But we can’t simply ignore the value of impact. Mack and Cheese hit harder…that we can’t deny. Why I think that everyone is really disturbed by this is the false notion that Hip Hop/Rap is still a “black” thing. Consumer wise we are the least relevant group. We make the least impact at the registers. If only these awards were solely based on the craft it self…

    • asani baki

      macklemore is trash.

  • Fubu

B DOT is the biggest pussy nicca in rap stan world, dude don’t know shit and keeps riding OVO cock like Eliott.

    • asani baki

macklemore is trash from an objective point of view. his album will
never been remembered as a classic like gkmc (like most artists are
      saying)..

  • novakaine

First and for most would a black artist apologize to a white artist ?

With that being said macklemore how did he win album of the year did anybody even know he had album outside that single thrift shop obviously disingenuous because why feel the need to post it on social media

    http://Www.soundcloud.com/kr-mack-1

  • mike

Macklemore is a 4 time grammy winner without a record label, the people who vote wanted to acknowledge that as well its historic ,nothing to be taken away from Macklemore

  • http://www.datpiff.com/mixtapes-search.php?criteria=dee+nusa&x=-1106&y=-298 Dee Nusa
  • Sina Mailer Daemon Djavadkhani

Macklemore did good, and he did good acknowledging Kendrick. Hip Hop is great right now.

  • Nic Aych

All he had to say was “I can’t accept this award…”

  • B

did any of you even listen to The Heist? By far, by far, by far the best, most impacting rap album of the year. ya’ll are crazy. that content is crazy, (most likely it is way to deep and complex for you simple ghetto trap mindless music fucks) it takes an elevated intelligence to appricate it (meaning you probably have to at least graduate from high school, maybe attended a few CC courses) songs like ten thousand hours, cant stop us, same love, make the money, white walls, wings (changed my life), starting over, and my oh my are amazing rap songs. crazy subjects and content. relevant subjects that other rappers cannot even begin to approach. fuck what ya’ll think, ya’ll just salty you dont got a vote that matters. hands down, best album of the year, maybe of the decade. simpletons, pathetic. And I seen them in concert, i’ve seen many more artist than anyone else on this site I know that, Jay-z (twice), kayne west, lil wayne, jeezy (twice), drake, kendrick lamar, jcole, TI, big sean, mac miller, yellawolf, meek mills, freddie gibbs, big krit (twice) you have no idea… the list goes on, im tired of typing. shit ive been to rock shows bon jovi, TSO, etc. and the list goes on, I would have to check more of my stubs. the best show, hands down, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. the stage and props were insance, show had energy, and dude actually appricated and respected the crowd, I thought it was over 3 times, dude just kept rapping and performing. and did I mention the music? lol and the fact that this was indy? hahahah cant wait for the next project fellas. if this wasnt the best rap album of the lets hear that is? I want to hear some suggestions (and if anyone says yeezus, immediately kill yourself because your a breathing contradiction)

    • asani baki

macklemore is trash from an objective point of view. his album will never been remembered as a classic like gkmc (like most artists are saying)

  • trashman

Yall just pussy. Trying to justify the entire cycle of rappers and fans doing whatever to make a dollar without limits, straying from self respect and knowledge of self, then the white man completely taking your shit and making it his. Itsnot Macklemores fault that he knows yall are
Idiots. Its hip hop a manufactured culture built for the benefit of whites.

Music, clothes, cars, jewelry, mansions, prison population increases, private prisons, funerals, lawyers, judges…who is really getting paid for it. Who is spending on it? And you glorify it. No wonder blacks can’t accomplish anything. Cause you stuck in the illusion.

  • TN

None of the white rappers mentioned wrote a gay-rights song that they got to perform on Ellen’s show.

  • asani baki

Kendrick can feel like a winner, he has the whole industry behind him, even artists/producers/media/hip hop fans are shitting on macklemore & the grammy and all of them are saying that it won’t change the legacy of gkmc( classic).

  • Picasso Je Suis

All eye got to say is we started this shit called hip.hop. we been doing this shit called rap for a real long time. It belongs to us. Not some white boy or girl who finally caught on as to how to do it weather it Eme or these 2 weak lyric having characters. It does not matter. The black man and woman will always be the best thing that happened to music…..which includes hiphop

  • Picasso Je Suis

Yeah props to the dude for recognizing what is and what ain’t for and at the weak ass grammy’s. But it’s the Grammy, so wtf. Bring on the BET awards, vh1 hip hop honors, who I’m still.upset with for leaving out Memphis when talking about the rise of southern hip hop. Bring on the Soul Train Music awards. Let’s see them 2 weak muthaphuckas win something there
