Although Kendrick Lamar unfazed by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Best Rap Album Grammy win, Drake, who was also nominated, was more perturbed. He told Rolling Stone that he felt Mack’s public apology was gratuitous and that the other nominees deserved texts as well.
I was like, ‘You won. Why are you posting your text message? Just chill. Take your W, and if you feel you didn’t deserve it, go get better — make better music. It felt cheap. It didn’t feel genuine. Why do that? Why feel guilt? You think those guys would pay homage to you if they won?

I get your point, but I also feel like Drake’s way of doing things is closer to how shit actually works in real life. Like I don’t think he’s necessarily “dissing” people, rather noting certain things he finds disagreeable. Sometimes it is unnecessary, but also too minor to really call for “beef” or a diss record. Almost like he feels it’s beneath him to take things that far.
He kept his emotions real, but creating “brand of music that appealed to more people” wins you best ALBUM, not best RAP ALBUM. Also, not everyone that votes in the Grammys knows about rap music. This is something that Macklemore stated which makes the whole Grammy thing less credible. In return making Drakes earlier “validation” less meaningful.

I don’t like Macklemores music…but I think he did it in the public eye cause he realized that race did play a part of it and wanted the people who vote on this thing to realize that numbers don’t mean everything and to actually look at the body of work, not just singles sold.

I don’t know, Macklemore may seem like a genuine dude, but there is no mistaking that he knows what lanes to play to keep a buzz. He does believe in acceptance, but it doesn’t rule out the fact that he exploits the message to gain more support and success, look what happened when Lady Gaga came out as a champion for Gays, they bought ALL of her albums… ALL of them. That whole text message thing was nothing more than a PR stunt. If it wasn’t, it would have stayed private. It’s a gimmick, but the thing is, you can’t be both, you can’t own the Grammys and AMAs for a night, then try to spit in the face of the Grammys and pull a text message posting stunt to seem “real” when you realize that rap fans don’t really fuck with you in comparison to your peers. This is Macklemore’s crossroads, these corporations will continue to endorse him and give him contracts, and award shows will hold him down, but that will disconnect him from the real rap community, however if he calls himself being stand up and pulling stunts to pretend he’s less of a media puppet, they will drop his ass as a spokesperson, and find the next safe pop/country/rap personality to talk through, ask Frank Ocean.
