The Voice of New York has been silenced. After two decades on air, Angie Martinez resigned today from Hot 97. Before her final broadcast above, she left this message on her Instagram page.
Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show ❤️ stay tuned…. Love, angie

Nah. I’m just a guy who grew up in NYC listening to Hot97 everyday (that’s my word). If it was all sweet the station should have given her a real sendoff. Get Jay, Ye, and a bunch of big names to honor her and what she brought to the station and to the culture for almost 20 years.
Angie and Flex are Hot97. That shit is an institution. She was the best radio personality on the best rap station in the world during the best era of rap on the radio.
And then she just up and leaves in one day no explanation? I’m not ashamed to admit I wanna know what happened. I think it makes me a real supporter of the culture.

Ebro is doing way to much. I was listening to Hot 97 the other day, and Ebro was dominating the conversation, and he was “correcting” the other radio personalities when they didn’t agree with him. Hot 97 needs to either give Ebro his own show, or put a muzzle on him. He wants to be famous so badly, but refuses to admit it. The way he and Rosenberg came at Chuck D was straight up disrespectful, and they call themselves “Hip Hop”.

In a not growing business like Radio you can’t win only by better shows sometimes you need to buy yourself some market share. That is what clear channel did! Get you a highly known and good working property out of your competitor and then syndicate it like they did with the breakfast club. Angie is known in the urban market of radio around the country not just in NY. Clear channel doesn’t want to pay too many personalities and thats the reason for the syndication of the breakfast club. Same shit about to happen with Angie. And for sure she wanted more money from HOT97 but they can’t match it because it is just NY. I have to say that interviews on Hot97 are some of the most poorly conducted conversations I have EVER heard. Personalities like Flex, Ebro and so on love to make the interview more so about them, as evident by the way that they constantly speak over guests and go on LONG rants about THEIR personal beliefs.
