A lot of Compton had a very definitive west coast sound- Listen to the records with Snoop, Cube, Xzibit, Kendrick, “All in a Days Work” Most of the album had that sound but updated.
But really who’s defining the west coast sound in 2016. DJ Mustard? Nah, that’s too pop. TDE? Nah, they’re sound is too diverse to have 1 distinctive tone. So Dre really IS the guy that’s combining the vintage sound with the new sound.
On a random note, Dre should shoot a video for “Animals” and “For the Love of Money” Don’t know why they haven’t shot videos and pushed singles on this album…Animals is so slept on and the message is so appropriate right now. And For the Love of Money should be all over radio.

My opinion ain’t about the brand, it’s about the sound. In a time where fans are more receptive to new sounds than ever before, Dre’s music has been dogshit.

Deep Water, Talking to My Diary, Medicine Man, Animals, Genocide….these records still shit on most contemporary artists. And this is coming from a guy who hadn’t released an album in 15 years. Legends are not immune to criticism and Compton wasn’t a classic, but it was a very good body of work (albeit Dre’s worst, but that’s a pretty high bar) that was more cohesive than 90% of the shit out.
Sorry, I wish I could agree but I can’t. I love Dre, but none of his new shit had any replay value. Therefore, it’s shit.
