Hughes Brothers Talk Tupac Altercation
In the current issue of VIBE, Allen Hughes (on the left) breaks his silence regarding the 1993 altercation between he and Tupac. Their dispute stemmed from Pac losing the role of “Shariff” in their film, Menace II Society. Pac was later convicted of assault and battery.
“The biggest misnomer is that me and Tupac got into any fight. It was me and 12 Crips that he got to jump me. He didn’t do shit,” Allen claims. “Tupac didn’t lay a hand on me. I had my hands on him. But there was not a physical fight between me and Tupac. It was a physical fight between me and 12 gangbangers. I believe they are called the Rolling 40s and they rolled me up pretty good.”
Allen adds:
“Tupac was an artist. Tupac was not a gangbanger. Tupac could not fight to save his motherfucking life. I know that for a fact. He was an immensely gifted person and he was far, far, from a thug.” He lets out a deep sigh. “I think that’s just years of frustration that just came out.”

However I don’t think it’s in good taste at all to start speculating on what Pac was or wasn’t in his personal life only after he’s safely in the ground . . I didn’t know he was close enough with Pac to have an informed opinion on how he handled himself outside of a movie studio anyhow . Pac may have just been actin’ like a thug or maybe not. not but he’s dead now either way . The story itself sounds shaky. He had time to count how many dudes were jumping him? He still managed to get his hands on Pac during the beating ? To everybody saying Pac was a studio gangster and all he he got a rep for was getting shot, ya’ll need to do ya research. Pac got his rep for shooting 2 cops and getting away with it because they never identified themselves as officers.
Pac wasn’t a thug when he first started rapping but he became one.
To become something you have to have direct experience with it and that’s what Pac tried to do by acting out and hanging out with shady characters. It’s weird because at first he was just doing that to add authenticity to the thug life movement, which was trying to stop inner city crime from the inside-out as opposed to the typical outside-in way that the government practices. It wanted the hood to regulate itself.
He was too immature to see it all the way thru tho. You gotta understand, dude was only like 22-23 years old when all of this was going on. That’s young as hell. Just being young, in the spotlight and moving too fast caught up with him and he got shot in NYC and went to jail.
Then he switched up his whole ideology to the killiuminati shit, which was on some power/capitalism shit.
Anyway, back to the point. There might be some truth to Allen Hughes’ claims. During the whole thug life shit (93-95) Pac was rolling with crips out in L.A. Once he joined Death Row he started screaming M.O.B. because that was Suge’s set. It was all about power at that point. Daz once called Pac a set hopper because one minute he was crip affiliated and the other he was blood. Suge was a multi-millionaire with a real street army that included LAPD officers. That dude was powerful and feared. Death Row was really untouchable and Pac wanted to be a part of that after awhile.
Kinda pointless for Hughes to mention this now. The brothers have done movies since Menace and could have addressed this a long time ago. Plus, he’s probably embellishing the story. If 12 crips jumped him why didn’t he press charges against them? He pressed charges against Pac, who according to him he didn’t have a fight with. Does that make any sense?
