    HOMEHROUND SOUND

    dr dre < johnny j

    MASS APPEAL

    timbaland < will.i.am

    Soul Sample

(Just Blaze (Pete Rock > The Alchemist)

    BOOM BAP

    DJ Premier > RZA

    My opinions .. dont hate

  33. Blakout615 says:

    @ boom

Beats by the pound are my fav producers of all time but Paul&J have been doin that “3-6 sound” since around ’91. And Mannie’s sound was more influenced off of new orleans bounce which Beats by the Pound mainly didnt do. If anything I would say Lil jon took bits and pieces from all of em.

  34. '97 Cheech & Chong says:

dr dre will win in the end

    just Johnny J should win

hes produced whole albums for tupac

  35. dan_tha_man832 says:

    no mike dean?

  36. Franklin d Bush says:

    where my nig madlib

  37. Oj Da Cornball says:

Ok, i just see many wrong things in there already.
how they got Daz against Eric Sermon FOR SOUL SAMPLES?
    Who did this list?
Have they listen to Dogg Food, All Eyes on ME?
Not one soul sample from Daz. Dude had nothing but live music and hard tracks. That need to change.

CAl me stupid but who’s LArry Smith? Some dudes there not even known or put in enough work to be considered. SMH

  38. jlabella11 says:

Would you people read the thing before commenting things like “where is 9th wonder”? Jesus. Its all fan voting, so the rankings don’t mean a whole lot. My only complaints are that Nottz should be on, and pete rock should be #1 ahead of yeezy. This is def better than last years mc bracket.

  39. HOVA!! says:

How are Rick Rubin and Timbaland not 1 seeds
Kanye is great but he should still be a 2 seed
    I’m just sayin…………….

  40. AVasta says:

    No Chris Webber?

  41. Toya says:

Now this is a good bracket challenge because in order to accurately vote in each head-to-head, one has to know what records the two competitors have produced to make a sound judgement. I admit that in order for me participate in this challenge, I would have to Google several of these people if I wanted to avoid picking based on simply the names that I have heard. Unfortunately I’m pretty sure that a lot of people will vote for people based on the familiarity of the person’s name.

  42. Fahey says:

and what about, DRUMMA BOY, Alchemist, 9th wonder, Vybe, SuperStarO, J.U.S.T.I.C.E League, The Runners, Eminem, Jermaine Dupre…who the hell made this list

  43. hollup man…no Shawty Redd either? and Jeezy is on the cover…..ummmmm hahahaah

  44. BOBBi_G says:

YO FUCK THAT SHIT EDITOR!!!!!!!!!!! E. WILSON OR NOT!!!!!!!

KANYE = GREAT ARTIST/PRODUCER THAT SHIFTED THE SOUND OF MUSIC 1x

DR. DRE = GREAT LEGEND THAT SHIFTED THE SOUND OF MUSIC @ least 3x (the N.W.A. sound, the Death Row G-Funk sound, That next level shit that he started after the Death Row era & that sped up next level shit he does for eminem), has the most anticipated album I can recall in my 23yrs on this earth & has put on so many cats it’s crazy.

  45. supermalt says:

damn no Madlib, Buckwild or DJ Scratch?

  46. cory says:

it’s dope to see the Dust Brothers on here

  47. aqua says:

If I was Toomp I’d feel a ways about being a 16 seed. That’s scrub status.

  48. Cudder says:

WHO THE FUCK ASKED WHERES 40?

  49. InternetSoldiers says:

    Got that, Joe Budden.

You fuckin’ faggots. I should sit on the roof while you bitches get sniped.

  50. The Truth says:

    ORGANIZED NOIZE!!!!

  51. devante says:

    why is toomp a 16 and juicy j is a 5

  52. Fat boy says:

I’m not Gona lie i rather have Vibe do a best rapper alive or producer list then MTV SMH lol they put gucci in the top 10 but left eminen out lol

  53. kofi says:

I might get killed for this but how is Will.I.Am a 16 seed? At the very least you have to put him a head of Polow Da Don.

  54. Dashing says:

Decent list but yeah Timbo should be a 1 seed. JD should be higher than Trackmasters too. Just Blaze should be ahead of Erick Sermon (even including EPMD days) but overall not too bad.

It’s def too soon to include DJ Khalil, The Runners, Danja 40, Bo1da, or Justice League but give it a year or 2 and they’ll be on there.

Homegrown sound should go to Dre pretty comfortably.
Mass Appeal should go to Timbo in a hard battle against the Neptunes.
Soul Sample is probably the most stacked category with Dilla, Ye , Pete Rock, and Just Blaze, OutKast all having a shot but I think it’ll go to Kanye because it’s voted on by the fans.
Boom Bap should go to a Primo in a close battle with Rza.

Dre vs Timbo goes to Dre.
Kanye vs Primo goes to Primo in a close battle setting up Dre vs Primo.

    Dre to win it all.

    That’s my thoughts. We’ll see.

  55. Brace Urself says:

This is a joke. DJ Premier is the greatest producer of all-time, and he stays getting shitted on by these major urban publications. But we’re talking about a magazine that stood by claiming Eminem the best rapper alive, so looking at the brackets, I say they proclaim The Neptunes, Timbaland or Dr. Dre. that wouldn’t surprise me.

  56. JC says:

How the FUCK is a RZA a 2 seed?!

  57. 2Pacalypse says:

AND IF THE PEOPLE SAID EMINEM IS THE BEST, WHY ARGUE??? PRIMO ISN’T GETTIN SHITTED ON WHEN HES RANKED 1, ASSHOLE…

  58. Fat boy says:

@2pacslypse. Exactly it’s not the magazine that voted eminem the best rapper alive it was the people that voted him best alive and shit I’m one of them. BRING DA HATE!!!

  59. JASON T says:

    DR.DRE HANDS DOWNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT WHERE DO YOU VOTE AT I THOUGHT WE CLICK ON SOMETHING???

  60. SilkCityP says:

Since its brackets… My Final 4 would come down to Dr. Dre, Neptunes, J Dilla, DJ Premier… not at all how it would go if they weren’t broken down into brackets… But Shame on Vibe for not having Buckwild, Nottz, Lord Finesse on that bracket!!!

  61. _MelG_ says:

YOUVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

The 2 Live Crew track that is playing in New Jack City when they are riding around in the jeep was produced by DJ Toomp. DO YOU MFERS KNOW HOW LONG TOOMP HAS BEEN IN THE GAME??? and he is still making Grammy nominated music??? Putting him at 16 is BLASPHEMY.

Q-Tip produced damn near EVERY ATCQ SONG. Just for contribution to the genre, some of the ppl above him have to go. I dont know who cuz thats a heavy category, but 11th place for Q-Tip in a discussion about production is kind of crazy. It still makes me sad that he lost mad unreleased music in that fire…

Bangladesh = “BOOM BAP”? Ive been a fan since What’s Your Fantasy (8th grade Fall Ball was poppin lol), but boom bap? I think he might belong in homegrown sound…

They shouldve let VIBE just rest in peace man. No disrespect to Rap Radar and the clearly associated family, but if Danyel Smith could not keep it afloat, what makes these InterMedia Partners ppl think they can run a hip-hop mag? Im sick of vultures circling around my culture. This stuff has to stop.

  62. bgirl says:

    Sucks to be 88-Keys

  63. Kiss92 says:

Damn Soul Sample Section Is Hard !!

  64. Kiss92 says:

    Damn No Justice League??

  65. Dashing says:

I think Dre has to win because of this.

Classics where Dre did the bulk of the production

    Straight Outta Compton (1988)
    The Chronic (1992)
    Doggystyle (1993)
    Slim Shady Lp (1999)
    Chronic 2001(1999)
    Marshall Mathers Lp (2000)
    Get Rich Or Die Tryin(2002)
    Documentary (2005)

Not to mention street classics “Phone Tap” “Natural Born Killers” “Keep Their Heads Ringing” “Been There Done That” ” Deep Cover” “Afro Puffs” “X” “Bitch Please” “Lay Low”

“California Love””Family Affair” “Rich Girl” “Break Your Neck” “Let Me Blow Ya Mind”

    and a host of others.

No one’s catalog even comes close. Not only has he changed with the times. He’s changed the times. Broke some of the biggest artists in the world. Made hits for the best rappers of all time (Pac, Nas, Jay, Raekwon, Busta, 50, Eminem, Snoop, Cube, etc.).

  66. Dashing says:

Oh and people are still waiting to hear Detox like it’s the second coming of Christ. Name another artist in the world that has been around as long as he has that has that kind of anticipation for his album….

And it’s not because of his rapping skills.

  67. A.L.C. says:

    Thanks Vibe for more controversy!!

Why does Q-Tip have a low seed? Why is Toomp a 16?

And the kids need to understand that without Pete Rock & Dilla there would be no Kanye & Just Blaze.

  68. ATI says:

    Where the eff is Madlib?

  69. BK says:

Am i the only one who thinks Pete Rock is the SHIT?: HOP, SKIP & JUMP ANY1?
I think Dre’s walking away with it tho, that dude dashing pretty much summed it up.

  70. amazinace says:

    1. RZA
    2. DJ QUIK(way better than dre)
    3. PRINCE PAUL
    4. THE BOMB SQUAD
    5. HAVOC
    6. THE NEPTUNES
    7. PETE ROCK
    8. DAZ
    9. JUST BLAZE
    10. ALCHEMIST

EXTRA PICK: THE HITMEN AND ORGANIZED NOISE

    …..THEY DONT HAVE BATTLECAT

    DO YOUR HOMEWORK HIP-HOPPERS!!!!!!!!!!!

  71. L4U says:

NO Madlib!!!!!!?????? HAVOC at 8 WTF!!!!!???

  72. teejay says:

45 king not on there? No madlib? Smh.

But oh well, they got most of em right, seedings are iffy but they got most of em. I expect dre to take it all, he’ll get it because fans are voting and he pretty much deserves it.

Hell, dre would be in conversation for greatest producer of all time in general, much less hip hop.

  73. Dashing says:

Most difficult battle = No ID vs Alchemist.

    Tough call.

  74. Dashing says:

@teejay the 45 king IS on there. 7 seed in soul samples. I voted for Salaam Remi over him though. His catalog is underappreciated.

  75. Tino says:

    Easy win for Premier…

  76. Cannon says:

    Question? Where is DON CANNON???

  77. Cannon says:

ANOTHER QUESTION? Where is DAZ DILLINGER???

  78. teejay says:

    @dashing

    Didn’t see it, my bad.

And yeah his catalog is under appreciated, but he made the beats to two of hip hop’s greatest songs, “stan” and “hardknock life”. It’d be hard NOT to give him a spot.

  79. Dashing says:

@ Cannon, Daz IS in there. # 13 seed in Soul samples. That’s another close one against Erick Sermon. I think E will squeak out the win.

  80. GUARE says:

this shit aight.. shout out to dame grease should be up higher.. thats the dark horse though.. he should make some rounds.. he produce that dmx joint the first album the hard joints.. and he that wave nigga.. this a good one though

  81. izreal says:

Mass apeal? hmmm going by sales Irv Gotti cannot be a 10 seed.

  82. MaG says:

this should get real interesting real quik…im already picking dre and preemo in a sudden death free for all…

  83. Tension says:

what about Kno from Cunninlynguists? I’d say a majority is a good list but there are a lot of wack producers like Polow and Juicy J.(eh not really, but just shouldn’t be on a list, nor seeded that high for greatest producer) Nujabes,Q-Tip, etc. etc. hell, Ryan Leslie is much more talented than Cool&Dre

  84. Vibe Sucks @ hip hop says:

RZA wasn’t killing the soul samples in the 90’s?

    Can’t it be?
    Cream?
    Tears?

  85. yo mama says:

One question…………………..Where is Eminem on the list?……………………..Eminem is not only the BEST rapper Alive but hes made some pretty dope beats….half of those producers mentioned made like 1 or 2 songs that made any kind of noise

  86. justbeingreal says:

    Homegrown >>>> Dr. Dre

Mass Appeal >>>> Very tough decision between Timbo the King and the Neptunes (Off catalog I would have to choose Timbo) I like the Neptunes better btw…

Soul Samples >>>> Real tough between Just and Ye (Off recent charting hits and catalog Just Blaze….) I love Kanye as an overall artist.

Boom Bap >>>> I am not really knowledgeable on it so off str8 face i’ll give it to Premo

Dr. Dre vs. Timbo (Timbo makes ill hits but Dre makes mega superstars and sells much more albums which is more money than selling singles) Dr. Dre

Just Blaze vs. Premo (Premo, a Southern cat, made the NY sound and Just Blaze been making crack and is currently working on Relapse 2 so off overall catalog and not off face) Just Blaze

    Dr. Dre vs Just Blaze…

Whoever produces the better Relapse wins. LOL!

But seriously Dr. Dre by a landslide…

  87. BJ says:

LOL this list is stooopid. I guess Vibe will get the press they want but this is just dumb. Just Blaze is a 5 seed? Seriously? Get the Fk outta here. I don’t even think Kanye would say Pete Rock is a 2 seed. Rick Rubin is a 4 seed? They should do more research.

  88. bap2313 says:

    Toughest match ups:

    Organized Noize v. 9th Wonder & No I.D. v. The Alchemist.

Especially the first one, but I think I’d have to roll with Organized Noize just because of the classics they’ve done for Outkast.

  89. So Icy Boi! says:

Where my nigga Zay Toven at??? Why aint that many souths producers on here?

  90. Dan says:

    Dan says:
Tuesday, April 06 2010 at 1:57 PM EST
dr dre is the first one listed bra…………..where is my man nottz??
    —————–

Nigga, get your own fucking username you bama-ass nigga.

  91. Four extremely important names in in hip hop production are not on that list and there’s actually more but let’s ask Vibe:

How come Howie Tee (the very producer to ever sample) is not not on that list?
With as many classics Howie has produced it’s rather shameful these publications forgot who started it all. If it wasn’t for Howie Tee there wouldn’t be a Pete Rock, Hurby Luv Bug so many more who where legendary for sampling.

Where is Larry Smith on the list?
Larry is the musical genius behind Whodini and RunDMC and Vibe forgot about him? Ask Dr. Dre who inspired his style and he will be the first to tell you Larry Smith.

Kurtis Mantronik Vibe, why is he not on your list?
Curtis Mantronik was the original master of the chop and screw that so many producers in the south took from.

Davey D people, can you hear me? I said Davey D you degenerate mofos!
Davey D was Jam Master Jay’s production partner. Who you think played all them live basslines and guitars and Davey D was a nasty ass DJ to boot.

Good going Vibe! You just assured me that will never buy your crappy magazine ever.

  92. Teddy says:

this is hard to do cos theres so much we dont know about ghost production n who got it done on what tracks some of our fav tracks may hav been ghost produced and how much % the producers actually did so this whole thing from get go is bogus but if were jus goin of what we do know dr.dre no brainer man

  93. ZDavi says:

TOOMP DIDNT EVEN HAVE A CHANCE AND HE’S ONE OF MY TOP 10

  94. Kurt GoBang da2nd says:

toomp being under polow da don alone voids this list, no to mention the all of the other fucked up rankings that are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay the fuck off. this list just made me mad for a sec, for real lol. damn, that’s funny.

no biggie, ultimately, though. i mean, it IS vibe.

  95. Kurt GoBang da2nd says:

    …..THEY DONT HAVE BATTLECAT

    DO YOUR HOMEWORK HIP-HOPPERS!!!!!!!!!!!

^^^^^hip hoppers? this is VIBE, dude!!!!

    ————————————————————-

    Question? Where is DON CANNON???

^^^^^ again, this is vibe we’re talking about.

    ————————————————————-

NO Madlib!!!!!!?????? HAVOC at 8 WTF!!!!!???

^^^^^ do i have to repeat myself? does this fuckery show you why this list is a joke???

    ————————————————————

I’d say a majority is a good list but there are a lot of wack producers like Polow and Juicy J

    ^^^^^ well, you’re half right…

    ————————————————————

    dj pete marriott:

though i do agree with you 110%, unfortunately these fools didn’t feel there was a need to include the foundation of all this shit, which further proves my point that this list ain’t sheeeit…

  96. TopBananas says:

This sh^t so disproportionate. And they aren’t even giving certain people a chance. And @Kurt GoBang da2nd said it best, “…i mean, it IS vibe.” F^ck you expect. Sh^t ain’t nothing but a waste of time.

  97. CP says:

    1. I’m extremely sad that you dont know much about the “BOOM BAP” bracket, which is probably the best all around bracket.
    2. Pete Rock shouldnt be a 2??? Are you kidding me? He should have the 1 seed in that bracket.

It should be Dre vs. Premier in the finals, but Premier should get the nod. I love Dre, but look at Premier’s catalog, not only did he have bangers with Gang Starr, he produced GREAT CLASSIC records for almost every top MC. Big Daddy Kane, Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, Rakim, Kool G, KRS1, Big L, Jeru, Ice-T, Snoop, Fat Joe in his prime, MOP, Royce, O.C., Mos def……(out of breath), Common, CNN, Group Home, The Lox, Masta Ace, Edo G, AZ, Ludacris…anyway you get the point…Premier is the 5th element in hip-hop.

This is totally just my opinion but real hip-hop heads will tell you the same thing.

Fact is he leads.. most others follow. Timeless sound.

The Bomb Squad should be ahead of mannie fresh too..produced Ice Cube’s AmeriKKKas’ most wanted, some of Slick Rick’s Great adventures of Slick Rick, for Run-DMC, and Public Enemy. come on people.

  115. Dashing says:

@DJ Q, Easy Mo Bee IS in there. # 12 seed in Boom bap section. Ya’ll need to really read this thing before criticizing. That’s the third person I’ve had to correct.

The list overall is pretty solid. There were a few oversights and a few people may have been seeded incorrectly, but overall it’s well done.

Soul sample is by far the most stacked category. With the exception of Cool and Dre and The Heatmakers, all of those producers have made certififed classics.

  116. The Noydd says:

Why the fuck is Bangladesh in the Boom Bap bracket?

Who the fuck are the Dust Brothers???

Other than that ehhh good shit.

Oh, Lord. Another f’d up list Vibe is making. J-Dilla #6 is appalling….
The Neptunes with a higher seed than RZA is kinda crazy, too. I could go on about this list…

Organized Noise should take their bracket, though. Nothing against Dilla. But listen to Kast’s first 3 albums and Goodie Mob’s first two……..

  132. budbass19 says:

hold up!!!! PEOPLE!!!!! chill out…..everyone cant make the list….ok im young…19…but i PROMISE my knowledge of the hip hop game can kill many of yall “old skool” niggas. imma agree with yall and say yea…hip hop lacking and is falling off with these new cats…but yall unfiar too. example. it makes me mad how ppl say biggie and tupac the best of all time…tru. they up there.
