Surprised? We’re not. Hits Daily Double tallies that 462,989 fans purchased Drake’s album, Thank Me Later. As a result, the LP will enter the Billboard charts tomorrow at number one as the highest selling debut this year. Congratulations.
UPDATE: According to Soundscan, the number is a bit lower at 447,000. Dope nonetheless.

I am really shocked that people who frequent this website are looking past the horrible climate that the recording industry has been in for the past 2 years or so. Piracy and leaks have made going platinum nearly as far fetched as going diamond. I don’t even like Drake that much, I didn’t buy the album, but in the current music industry, half a mil is incredible first week. Rappers don’t do that very often anymore. Plus, through the first half of 2010, that is the most records moved in one week. When Bobby Ray, who had a number one single in “Nothin’ On You” and another near chart topper with “Airplanes” couldn’t even break 100k first week, how are you going to say that 460,000 is a poor effort? Yes, Universal/YM/CM did put a lot of cash into this debut. Yes, Drake did have an insane amount of buzz. In this day and age, he did as well as could possibly be hoped for any artist. Can’t you guys just clap for hip-hop’s win? Just my thoughts.

I brought Drake’s album, I wasn’t at first because I am not a 100% fan but when a friend said his album was mostly singing, I thought it would be good because I love his voice when he sang (and yea he raps cool too) so I brought the album and I DID NOT LIKE THE ALBUM! I am not saying I hated the whole thing, but only 3 songs are ones that I listen to and well, I could have bought those off of amazonmp3….Anywho, I got the album for $9.99 at target, took it to FYE the next day, got a $6.50 credit for it and got Peter Griffin Fights the Chicken…You can’t go wrong with Peter.
I’m not hating on Drake (as many think once you say you don’t like something they think you should) but his album was mediocre, HOWEVER, he doing his damn thing so I wish him luck with many more albums (that I won’t) buy to come. He made a name for himself, can’t hate on that!
