Lupe Fiasco Gets A New Release Date

Lupe Fiasco fans can put away their picket signs. After meeting with Julie Greenwald yesterday, Atlantic Records has given Lu a a release date of March 8, 2011 for his third album, Lasers. Next Friday, fans planned to protest outside of the label demanding the LP’s release.
Still a long ass time away for an album that sounds ready.

The reason it is coming out next year is probably for more time promoting the album, maybe a single off the album will be released aswell. At least it’s got a date We are Lasers.

Independent artists never have these types of problems. Look at Tech N9ne. Dude can drop an album anytime he wants. Sell about an guaranteed 100-200k and tour year round. U dont have to worry about 360 deals being offered to you,labels forcing u to make a B.O.B. “nothin on you” or some Black eyed peas bull. U have artistic freedom. The only big setback with being independent is the promotion but with Lu’s following,he shouldnt have a hard time with that.
I doubt that this will happen,specially since Lu probably signed 1 of those 5 album type deals. I wish him the best of luck tho.

how can you say go indie? there are ONLY 3-4 maybe 5 artists (in Hip Hop) on an indie level making real money. Most indie artists work at a real 9-5 just to support the music they put out. If you have an option to go major why wouldn’t you?

Because on a indie level,Lu would POSSIBLY make the same amount of money that he makes on a major. Lets be real,most of the cash he makes is from show money NOT record sales.So why stay on a major,get fucked,cant release your music properly,when you can go independent,POSSIBLY make the same amount of money u was making on a major(maybe even more),NOT get fucked,plus on top of everything,release your music properly.
Hes an established artist so going indie would work for him whereas a regular cat working at McDonalds going indie wouldnt work automatically for them. Being on a major sounds good until u see the bigger picture. This is just my opinion.

Why would the major label, the REASON you are a “superstar” just let you leave before your contract is done after spending tons of money making you? Lupe was never an unsigned/underground phenom that signed a major deal. The first time you heard of him was through the Atlantic filter.
the major label/artist relationship is symbiotic if you want it to be.. good luck to him though
Actually, giving him that date allows them to properly set up at least two singles,to garner adequate buzz for the album, promo tours, etc. Plus, it’s the first quarter, and many big acts usually try to drop something in the fourth of the previous year, I.e the kanyes, the nikkis, the lloyd banks, etc to get those holiday sells. This way, unless someone bigger, like jay-z or whoever come out, whe has an open lane to really do pretty good numbers.

If Atlantic did make Lupe a “superstar”,does that give them a right to treat him the way that they have? Just because they put some money behind his career doesnt mean they can do whatever they want to with his career. He made them money also.

The sign in the back is over the top, c’mon son. But for real, most of you would’nt know Lupe Fiasco if he didn’t make a splash with Jay and Kanye and then get into the major label machine. Its obviously a catch 22, but yeah the artist is sposed to do all the work have all the creativity and then be at the whim of a dying dinausaur – the label. Its all about his second deal. Obviously if he could be indie now, he would, but he is locked into a contract.
At least his deal is probably better than most because he did a joint venture with atlantic and 1st and 15th. Its a double-edged sword though, because he has a better share, the label is less enthusiastic about pushing his art. They’d rather push some 15 year-old kid with no grammar who signed a dummy deal and then they see if he could be the next Souja Boy. They also want to delay releasing his music, in the hopes that he gets tempted to take upfront cash from them in exchange for another bad deal. Its a dirty game.
Its not cut and dry as to which road to take initially, but good for Lupe for not signing a bad second deal and still connecting with his fans.
