9th Wonder On Working With Lil B

Last week a Lil B track surfaced featuring Phonte and Jean Grae. The song’s producer 9th Wonder tells VIBE how the unusual collaboration came about and gives the MC his praise. Thank you 9th Wonder.

“Lil B reached out to me 3 or 4 months ago on Twitter and told me he’s a big fan of myself and Murs. At the time I didn’t know who he was, so I Google’d his stuff, and I was like “ooo-kay” [Laughs]. I saw “Wonton Soup“ and all that. Then, the Twitter world started going crazy off the fact that I was even talking to Lil B. It wasn’t until he released a record with Tony Yayo called “Based”, that Khrysis told me to check out. I heard it and he was saying some stuff on there — I was digging it — so of course I hit him back on Twitter to tell him. He was just really adamant about getting up. I told him if we get up — you can’t do no ‘Wonton Soup’ [Laughs]. And he knew it.

I told [Lil B] that he could be the reincarnation of Too Short. Like I always thought Wiz Khalifa was the reincarnation of DJ Quik. B could carry the torch. I got a lot of respect for that kid —  he’s brilliant. We did one more record and I think it’s going to have Murs on it. It’s about to make people even more upset — we’re working on that now.”

  10. Gee Wiz says:

Well what i will say is this: Its great that bigname people can speak to up and coming rappers on Twitter. Thats progress. HOWEVER, no disrespect to 9th as he’s one of the greatest to ever do it production-wise, but im not buying this story. Mad people try to contact people all the time on Twitter and in life in general, but generally get the cold shoulder or worse, dissed for it. You mean to tell me, Lil B of all fucking people reached out to an almost superproducer like 9th, 9th actually went and googled his catalogue and was cool about it? Then for another hot producer (Khysis) to refer Lil B to 9th again and then BOOM, yall working together and there’s people out here that bring more to the table than Lil B at the end of the day? No disrespect to B, but i call a spade a spade and the dude has a lot to improve on and there’s tons of cats I know that are way hotter than that Freshman class, period. Rap game ain’t what it used to be. I wish the 9th, Khysis, and yeah even Lil B the best in life, but this shit got me fucked up.

    translation ;

“when i heard this nigga shit i was like HELL NAH he’s garbage, but then he was really ready to cut a check for one of my beats, so fuck dat. A nigga gotta eat”

Im fuckin around. shout out to 9th!

  12. chargers_87 says:

I’m with the majority of you guys, 9th shouldn’t work with dudes with no lyrical caliber. But in the same time, this is what 9th has 2 do 2 put his name on the map. Talk 2 the so-called “hip hop” listener, and ask them have they heard of little brother!

  13. Chi Town says:

9th u don’t have to do this. Try calling J Cole one more time don’t waste the track

  14. Errol James says:

  15. Craig says:

  20. omgitshova says:

Murs is the better than ur fav rapper

  21. Errol James says:

Lil B is the next Lil B. Only similarity I can think that he has with Too Short is they’re from the Bay Area. He reminds me more of Andre Nickatina. They both have a style of they’re own, and are stories of underground success. Even then I wouldn’t say Lil B is the next Andre Nickatina. There is only one BasedGod.

  22. NEWKIDONTHEBLOG says:

Good job on guiding these yung rappers 9th wonder!

  23. Del says:

i don’t get the wiz and quik comparison at all… they sound nothing alike

  24. boogie says:

Hip hop done got crossed up. Just cause something is different dont make it wack. Reminds me of DC in the 90s where people were afraid to be different cause theyd get joaned on. That’s wack to me. In the early days of hip hop you couldnt call anyone wack at anything unless you had the skills yourself to back it up. You definitely couldnt say out your mouth an MC was wack unless you had the nuts to step up and battle. Now we got blogs and comments, and everyones a critic. I dare anyone who says Lil B is wack to put out 250 (shit even 125) of your own songs. Until then youre just a internet hater. Thank you 9th!
