Real spit, if you live in the Washington region you see the adoration the Washingtonians have for Chuck Brown. And to be quiet honest, being a New York City kid and coming to this area, I never understood it, but as I said, you see the love they have this guy and recognize the influence he’s had on Washingtonian.

With any thing, music is music and I respect the culture of music, so its only right we respect Go-Go as we would if it was our favorite rap artist. And, we don’t have to put in quotation the word Go-Go because we wouldn’t quote the word rap.

I look forward to tomorrow at work, where every native Washingtonian will be sharing their favorite Chuck Brown story.

Don’t think he influenced rap music? Go check out “Paid in Full’ with Cam’ron and you’ll hear a Chuck Brown sample.

    Respect the legends.

  16. Ill Street says:

Chuck is revered because he basically pioneered an entire genre, which drew from funk, jazz, gospel, r&b, latin and african rhythms — creating the cousin to hip hop, Go-Go music.

Go-Go has had a tremendous influence on hip hop early on, from the breaks of “Bustin Loose”, to the breakout success of Trouble Funk (also another heavily sampled group, see “Pump Me Up” or even LL’s “Rock The Bells”), EU, Rare Essence and Junkyard Band (who released a 12″ on Def Jam). Ask Bambaataa, he loves Go-Go.

Beyond the obvious genre innovation, Chuck Brown’s earlier 70’s work with the Soul Searchers produced monster cuts like “Blow Your Whistle”, which was a b-boy favorite, and “Ashley’s Roachclip”, the funk jam that hip hop DJs used to cut up and contained riffs and breaks that eventually showed up in cuts like “Paid In Full (Eric B & Rakim)”, “Run’s House”, “Jack The Ripper (LL)”, “Set Adrift …. (PM Dawn)”, “All Around The World (Lloyd)”, and countless joints WORLDWIDE.

His impact on the world instills a sense of pride from the DC area similar to the impacts of Marvin Gaye and Duke Ellington, significantly because DC is often overlooked by the entertainment industry, especially in hip hop.

Respect to the legend. RIP Chuck.
