FIRST OFF, I was present at this concert. Kendrick’s performance was disappointing; this dude needs to work on his lungs, he was omitting every second word or “rapping” slower than the beat and I say “rapping” because he tried to pull off some reggae shit. nu-uh, we know exactly what you’re doing, that is not going to fly. If you need to, which you do, get a hype man.
SECOND OFF, I can’t tell you the amount of times “Control” was yelled, chanted, etc so that he could play the damn song and show us he has balls to say what he said IN NY about NY. Nope, didn’t happen. Kendrick Lamar has tremendous talent, a great ear for production, and when it comes to music he’s got it, but the dude did not have the heart to back up his “Control” verse. Kendrick was soft at the wrong, potentially momentous, moment.
BUT, the people present either didn’t know about the control verse or have lost the pride and integrity that comes with being a NY’er and they seemed not to have been bothered by any of this. We expressed our discontent but the rest cheered on and Lamar went back to his bus thinking it was ok to conduct himself this way…..
