In the wake of Macklemore’s Grammy wins, yours truly along with Datwon Thomas and Jamilah King talked about the uproar on HuffpostLive.
I can’t believe B. Dot is avoiding the fact that Macklemore’s win is a clear case of white privilege. We get it, you rock with him. But Kendrick clearly had a better body of work. Rappers don’t get Grammy love. Kanye has never won in a white category. Let’s stop kidding ourselves.
And Macklemore texting, instagramming, but then not taking a stand at the Grammy’s further reaffirms the fact that he will not represent Hip Hop when it actually matters. We don’t need his white sympathy. We need action. He should’ve said, “I appreciate this award, but Kendrick should have won.” But he doesn’t want to upset his white fan base and show that he is our ally. Because he isn’t. His priority is his career. Not racial injustice. Not equality.
And I used to be a huge fan of him…
@Matt i rock with Kendrick too. I said I liked both of them. I think Mack shouldn’t have to show a text message to Kendrick. He worked hard. It’s not his fault that the system is broken.
Coons like BDot need to hang it up! at cookouts? where? Its False Equivalence…. The win still had to be somewhat believable. None of the other white artists that BDot is referring to had enough leverage to win an award for 2013… Macklemore had the sales so they used him.
If B.Dot wants to be a provocateur that’s one thing, but if he wants to represent the culture of hip-hop he demonstrates an ill informed opinion. Probably he just wants to play the asshole?
it wasn’t Macklemore’s fault for this situation (actually it is a lil if you look at his main body of work) Him winning the Grammys. Whether he won or not, his mainstream set up would respected him more than Kendrick. He’s already a poster child for safe pop music and the LGBT community so his popularity was gonna cloud Kendricks anyways

‘Yeah but if we use that as a measure, it’d be tough to say Esperaza Spaulding should have won best new artist. And she beat out a lot of Big names, Drake, Justin Bieber. I can go down the list.

I initially agreed with what the grammy committee wanting to put Macklemore in a different category but I guess they wanted the white dude to flourish in hip hop rather than little black kendrick from Compton…SMH
