50 Cent On Leaving Interscope

#SMSAudio.

Last month, 50’s decade long relationship with Interscope Records came to an end. Continuing his conversation with Rob Markman, Fif says part of the reason of his decision was the label’s marketing of Beats By Dre.

“Not that there wasn’t a whole lot of support, but just an actual fear factor created from the aura of respect that Jimmy[Iovine] has within the Interscope system. When you see Interscope turn into Beats Records, where everyone that you see is actually marketing Beats headphones — you don’t even see a music video without Beats headphones in it. So, when the only task from the actual video department is to make sure that I don’t put my headsets in the actual video — and then when we do see a rough cut, I see SMS Audio that I had on my hat is blurred out of the music video”.

Nothing wrong with what he said, but still 50 has to acknowledge that he can’t also promote his headphones on Interscope records without giving Interscope a slice (like what he did in My Life video or We Up)

    1. bigfoot2011 says:

He is making excuses for leaving. Koch is where u go when the majors no longer have interest in u. Let’s not act like koch is not the graveyard”- These are 50’s own words. Now he’s signed to Caroline records. Smh. Stop making excuses for him

      1. The More You Know says:

You can’t compare Caroline to Koch. He’s not a fool he wouldn’t sign no Kock deal. A big name like 50 can do great independently selling a more refined and quality product to more loyal fans.

        1. bigfoot2011 says:

U niggaz are hilarious. All the artists making most money on forbes list are on majors. This nigga is making excuses. No majors want him. Even wiz signed with a major when the money was right.

          1. bigfootdontknowshit says:

The top 3 on the Forbes list aren’t there for being signed to a major but for their business deals outside of rapping. Diddy is on the list because of Ciroc not Interscope. Jay is on the list for his touring deal with LiveNation, his Samsung deal & Roc Nation Management & Label, Dre hasn’t dropped an album for 15 years but Beats alone puts him on the list. And you really think that Interscope didn’t want to keep 50 when every album he has dropped has at least gone gold but they would wanna keep Chief Keef, French Montana, MGK, Slaughterhouse, and Yelawolf who have never gone gold? That also must mean that nobody wants Wiz since his last album didn’t even get there

          2. kevin james says:

They dropped him cause they know fif wont even go gold nowadays. It took BISD a damn year just to go gold

          3. kevinjamesdontknowshiteither says:

Damn you don’t know shit either, you honestly think Jimmy Iovine would drop an artist go who has sold over 20 million records but want to keep Cassie, Red Cafe and Azealia Banks??? I know you aren’t that fucking stupid

          4. kevin james says:

Homie thats in the past. When fif drop this album, he will do Cassie, Red Cafe and Azealia Banks numbers.

          5. Justadmityouareahater says:

You gotta be an irrational hater or really fucking stupid to actually believe that. Even if it’s in the past labels still don’t throw that shit way, how do you think Diddy and Bad Boy still have a deal? No one on Bad Boy has gone platinum since 2008 but no one is dropping Diddy or Bad Boy.

          6. bigfoot2011 says:

The argument was major vs independent. All the top guys u named are on majors and have gotten the global recognition from majors that has allowed them to branch out and do other things. There’s a reason beyonce doesn’t go independent or Eminem doesn’t go independent. French and Mgk, won’t demand the kind of money or budget 50 wants. This is a business. Why would interscope let someone go if they thought he was worth a lot to the company? They basically said, we can’t give u the budget u want and we won’t miss u cuz ur ice cold. I bet they won’t let eminem go.

          7. Truth B Told says:

            Nothing But the Truth!!!

          8. ghost says:

Lol, what is the big 50 deal outside of music? Sms? SK? Box fights? Movies? Why you think he fell off so hard on that list. The sad part is that his irrelevant new music its his best shot to became at least mediocre again!

          9. #RG4 says:

To challenge your statement and thinking.

            Macklemore ($16 mil, 2013) & Ryan Lewis.

            Label: Macklemore LLC | ADA

          10. The More You Know says:

Macklemore and Tech N9ne both on the Forbes list last year making more independently than major label artists such as Rick Ross and Jeezy.

          11. Michael Ibbett says:

Same with Mac Miller originally too, I believe.

        2. bigfoot2011 says:

Nigga please. This nigga on Koch. I love the excuses. His album will be pushed back again. Watch

      2. Darth Plagueis says:

That was years ago brother. Times have changed.
Now, MAJOR LABELS is where you go when the INDIES no longer have interest in you! #Truth

      3. Raj says:

But what u feel to realize, or probably acknowledge is that Fif is too big to be an artist anymore…it was time for him to move on. He’s a real mogul, a real boss…you gotta do something different at one point. And if you read the release he is REALLY getting $7 for every $10/11 dollar album sold….keep hustling Fif…keep on winning…And trust…he coulda gone to any other label if he wanted…he left interscope he didn’t get pushed off.

        1. bigfoot2011 says:

Wow my nigga, ur have a very feeble and impressionable mind. The aargument ur making for getting $8/10 an album was the same argument independent artists on koch were making when fif called it the graveyard. How many artists on the forbes list are independent? Why did wiz khalifa sign with a major when he was independent in the beginning? Why isn’t beyonce or rihanna or justin beiber independent? U get more money per album independent, but u sell much less because u don’t have the financial backing. Bigger percent of a small amount isn’t the way to go. Fif just wack now period.

          1. Raj says:

“How many artists on the forbes list are independent”….#1 if that’s your argument bruh…sit down, because that’s a weak argument to make just on merit…but okay..BABY FROM CASH MONEY!..Check whats real, its the same deal they… Cash Money has..thats 1!!!…2..forbes isn’t comprised of just record sales but all other merchandise, investments, etc. de

          2. intelligentsoul says:

You consider birdman an artist? LMAAAAOOOOOOOOO

          3. Megamind says:

Thank you for schooling young’n…these cats don’t get it.
I respect 50’s acumen…but PLEASE believe he is cold as an iceberg right now!

I work for a label…and if he was still a commodity…Atlantic, Warner, IDJ, Columbia, etc would have snatched him up! They know at this point, it’s going to cost more in marketing spend than they would actually make on CD/digital sales.

Now in 50’s defense…he will actually be profitable because he won’t spend on the marketing end what a major would…those the viral looking videos and no real ad buy campaign, etc.

But perfect example of someone still profitable…TI…you see Columbia picked him up and gave him a good deal…it was FARRRR from the 50mil he wanted….but still a great deal for a vet.

          4. AK says:

and TI is no 50, there isnt another black artist that has sold to date what 50 has sold, the nigga had deals on the table, going independent is what he chose to do cause all a label is good for is building up a newer artist and making them a household name, artist like 50 names are worldwide, no need to not be the boss. a label is a fucking safety net, don’t care what you saying, of course you gonna be an advocate for a record label cause as you said you work for one

          5. kevin james says:

Yo you killing this nigga! lol

          6. AK says:

nigga do yo research Tech N9ne been on Forbes for years and he been independent since 2002

          7. bigfoot2011 says:

So what about the 18 other ppl on the list who are on majors? U just discard them? Smh. Majors is where the money is if ur a big star. Independent is where u go if u have a niche following

          8. King Dolla says:

Wiz is signed to an independent that is signed to a major…that nigga makes absolutely no money off of his records..he makes money off of tours and merchandise which does extremely well. The major label is good for marketing him to a bigger audience. An audience 50 already has..technically he does not need the label support any longer.

          9. Michael Ibbett says:

Yeah but 50s argument was that they weren’t actually getting that much per album. So Raj point in saying he REALLY does is still valid

      4. OTB says:

Damn nigga you are obsessed with 50, did he drop you from G Unit or something? Is that you Game? Buck? Nah I know who you are you that bitch Olivia. You still mad about 50 not releasing your album aren’t you

      5. Extra Domus says:

Caroline is a premium label for independent artists that was made under Virgin records in New york in the 70-80’s can’t quite remember. It’s a perfect fit TF u talking bout…

    2. Truth B Told says:

Give interscope a slice of what…50 has several other business ventures that Interscope doesnt get a cut off…so,why should he give them a cut of his SMS profits…thats fuckn ridiculous!!

  2. ghost says:

Welcome to the graveyard! At least now you got a excuse when your new album go plastic in the first week!

    1. MEDULLA_OBLONGATA says:

Lool. Karma rhymes with snitch, I guess.

  3. iseerashonal says:

Fuck all that shit. Sincr when should fans give a fuck bout their business…im just hoping he delivers music wise. Give me some real shit i can bum in the whip

    1. Ricky Retardo says:

wow. the realest comment i’ve seen in the last 10 years.

  4. Jig-ah says:

    Baby I’M a Boss…I Don’t Know What They Do…I Don’t get Drop…I Drop the Label…JAY-Z said it BEST…# Karma # R.I.P.Deprtment

    1. AKofteam80ty says:

exactly and your point is, 50 dropped the label dumbass

  5. EchoxHotel says:

It wasnt in his best interest career wise to stay on interscope. If u not promoting beats but they blurring out your shit why stay. If they putting niggas like french montana ahead of you release wise why stay. When your boss is helping produce your other bosses album and also dealing with commercials and jon connor, and making music constantly for a project for an album that may never be released, why stay

  6. kevin james says:

Hahahaha its so funny 2 see fif eat his own words. I mean Jayz is cocky, but he was never 50 cent cocky. I guess 50 thought he was gonna be on top forever. Little did he know, his run would not last long. Poor fif and R.I.P. G unit.

  7. Rudy t says:

Bigfoot shut yo maggot ass up the game has changed drastically where have you been?

  8. GreenBergs says:

all a wack marketing ploy supposed to be fresh and outside the box for his wack album..he’s still signed for a few albums jimmy aint letting that go all that quick..

  9. YeDaTruth says:

your average 50 cent interview: “In terms of the actual project, the actual project is actually projected to project to an actual market and fanbase due to the actual project being marketed correctly to an actual market, and then the actual project can be released properly, as an actual project.”

  10. WAGADOOGOO says:

50 Cent has a limited vocabulary:
Curtis always says the same words and phrases over and over in all of his interviews!
