Dame Dash Responds To Lyor Cohen

Dame Is Watching.

Following our interview with Lyor Cohen earlier this week, Roc-A-Fella founder Dame Dash, responded to Lyor’s comments.

In the interview, Lyor said “It would bother me if it came from a credible source. I can’t give any light to that. It’s a clown right now” when asked about Dame’s “culture vulture” claims. Here’s what he said on his Instagram handle:

#CultureVulture won’t answer a direct question and gonna have the nerve to try to discredit a good positive man from our culture for telling the truth in an intelligent way..and still trying to convince us that we’re lucky to be getting robbed by him…they always try to make us think we are winning when we losing when they are trying to rob us …and he still can’t get a dollar from his own culture…I’m not credible?…. Who’s the clown?…And he’s like 70 still trying to get money off the rap game…nobody’s checking for that… The plantation game is over my culture is smarter then that these days… #HustleForYourLastNameFirst #CultureVulture the book coming soon @hip_hop_motivator let’s go! It’s time I’ve been waiting for him to speak after 6 months #nerd

    Preach Pastor Dash.

  2. Fleez says:

Dame is dead on here. Lyor went from working with Run, PE, Jay & DMX to Fetty Wap, T- Nasty & Migos.

Business wise it’s brilIant and I would respect him more if he just admitted that his new venture is strictly desined to capitalize on whatever’s “hot” and exploit it.

And maybe that is where “the culture” is headed, music IS consumed by “steams”, “views” & “likes” now.

But let’s not make it he’s a genius for being able to shift to a mordern business model.

And the MUSiC is STILL crap regardless of its popularity.

Those artist don’t need HIM. He NEEDS those artist! To stay relevant, to stay hot, to stay popping.

But he damn sure ain’t doing it for THE CULTURE, just found a new way to exploit it.

  4. We can sit here all day and try and talk crazy about Dame Dash, but everything Dame has said about Culture Vultures have been spot on. If you cant see that then i dont know what to tell you.

    1. Tom Mao says:

Dame just a hater cuz he out the game!

  5. dieter says:

yeah dame is often cocky and direct in your face with it..but i think lyor calling dame not a credible source & a clown simply confirms that he’s got no respect for the culture whatsoever. Because dame is definitely part of the culture and deserves that discussion. HE was the mastermind behind rocafella and still to this day he contributes knowledge, passion, love to our culture. he’s interview on the breakfast club alone has probably more cultural value than jay z’s entire catalogue. at least for people like myself..early 30’s, business owner, die hard hiphopfan,

    1. Miss.S says:

true on a few levels but DAME IS NOT THE “CULTURE” he is a rapist of the culture… how many “positive acts” did dame sign over at the ROC.. not one… ahahahahah anyway .. Lyor still gettin money niggaz is mad and yeah dame is a fuckin clown..

      1. O.G says:

Freeway wasn’t positive? Kanye? What are you talking about?? lol

    2. Kris Kompute says:

Let them keep sleeping on Dame’s knowledge. It’s not meant for everyone to be an entrepreneur.

    3. hands mahoney says:

Lyor is more of a part of the culture than Dame is. Lyor has been part of this culture from almost the beginning. Dame was in diapers when Lyor was helping the legends. Unless you’re talking about race and in that case gtfoh.

      1. Megamind says:

False…and you must be white to say that.
Do you know how many acts Dame’s been a part of nurturing and breaking in this business.

        Lyor didn’t necessarily start in this business…but he’s a G and I respect him.

        Megamind

        1. hands mahoney says:

Lyor has nurtured way more artists than Dame, and continues to do so. Dame just likes to talk shit about people, and continues to do so, but hasn’t been able to nurture or break any artists since Hov took his business elsewhere. Prove me wrong.

          1. Megamind says:

Hmmm…there’s a difference between nurturing and financing. Dame nurtured Jay, Cam’rom, Jones, young Mase and Big L (to an extent)…that’s a LOT of talent.

Whereas Lyor works for the label and provided resources for artists to release music…so there’s a big difference. Label’s haven’t nurtured artist since Russell Def Jam days, LA Reid La Face, Rap A Lot, etc. That’s why you have some many production companies – ie MMG, Taylor Gang, Good Music, YM, CMB, FBG, OVO, etc…THOSE are the companies discovering and developing talent.
People like Lyor, etc…all they do is provide capital/resources.

Now Lyor, etc. might provide them with business acumen AFTER the relationship is established. You can say they nurture from that POV…but not too often from a creative standpoint…unless they started out as creatives…ie Jimmy Iovine.

            Megamind

  6. Soup Weezy..... says:

Lyor could care less about the authenticity of Hip Hop. He’s just been around the right places at the right times and he’s been able to move with the shift of the movement.. Point in case- There’s no way if you really like HipHop and you’re a hip hop purist are you going to say that Fetty Wap is brilliant..FOH… Lyor’s a culture vulture, circling around the culture to swoop down on whatever is so-called hot…

    1. DeadCroaker says:

Lyor did what he supposed to do, that is get money who cares if he is a culture vulture. These rappers don’t care why should he.

      1. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

Still dont understand how Lyor is a Culture Vulture. Dude was in this business for over 30 years. Brought hip-hop to hollywood. Co-founded Def Jam. What more do you want?

        1. Megamind says:

He didn’t co-found Def Jam…that’s a falsity…he was a tour manager for RUN DMC and was brought in by Russ AFTER Rick Rubin moved on to start Def American Records. Fun Fact…Russ, Lyor, Rick and Kevin Liles still own the name Def Jam. They actually license it to UMG.

I worked at Def Jam during the Lyor/Kevin Liles regime. We had Jay, Ja, X…Mef, Red…just had signed Luda, Musiq…and Sisqo was killin’em too. I have respect for Lyor as a businessman…he’s extremely shrewd. I wouldn’t call him a full on “CV”…BUT there is some truth to what Dame says. He’s known to have play the Roc, RR and The Inc against each other…it was like the tower of Babel…he had to keep them at odds to not fully know the leverage/power they had.

Lyor definitely knows how to get money off the culture…But he’s help make a lot of Black people rich…including Dame. Dame had the talent but Def Jam was the means to the end. He’s also like Phil Jackson in a sense as well bc he was great at getting power players and personalities to gel.

Random fact…when IDJ merged and 2 of the top artist on Island (U2 and Bon Jovi) had to pick a label home…Doug Morris gave Jimmy Iovine U2 and Lyor got Bon Jovi…until this day it has been a source of contention between the two men. The latter of both (Lyor and Jon Bon Jovi) has always been resentful….just some behind the scene shit.

          Megamind

        2. Savimbi says:

Co-founded def jam!????????? And you’re supposed to be a “credible” hip hop journalist? Smfh

          1. Kiko says:

Bro what u know about savimbi lol R.i.p

        3. Dark Matters says:

You stumbled when you said Lyor co-founded DefJam, Brian.

        4. Vurbz Fenomeno says:

I’m saying ….personally I think if u don’t like Lyor Cohen it’s strictly because of his skin color ..yall niggaz are racist because Lyor didn’t do anything that puffy didn’t do and yall still love puff ..FOH..if your gonna call out culture vultures be consistent. yall worry too much

          1. WhoaPlayer says:

Because culture vulture is usually and initially was intended to describe non black fandom. However, mediocre melody hot song for the month-s/year artists can be vultures as well.

          2. Vurbz Fenomeno says:

nah you’re wrong cullture vulture refers to anyone who is not of a culture but hovers around waiting to benefit off the death and/or exploitation of the culture. Lyor Cohen use to manage Big daddy Kane in the 80’s, i think its pretty safe to say that he’s part of hip hop. Anything else is just racism. Y’all fight to make your culture equal and then dont want anybody else outside your race to enjoy what you’ve built. Kill that noise.

          3. WhoaPlayer says:

No blk ppl don’t want their culture exploited. Blk culture is synonymous w/ hip hop culture! My nixxa duh. And yes Cohen and others helped bring hip hop to the mainstream (hence now hip pop) and ppl can enjoy but don’t water down the authencity. Plus not every artist was business savvy. I can call Fetty a vulture but I’d just say it’s different artistry. Blk Americans through racism envy jealousy and without anything at all were and still are the most emulated group of ppl all over the world.

  8. el jim chapo guzman says:

The music industry is full of this stuff…culture vultures…even back with rock & roll and how it was once white washed… Lyor Cohen isn’t the first, nor the last of these types, he’s just the one that most irks Dame, given his experience. But they also enabled him to the point of millions at one point via partnerships. But since the well has run drier than some may wish, it hurts now more than it did before, cause before the money made it hurt less.

      1. el jim chapo guzman says:

  9. thedeamkid19 says:

i think this culture vulture shit got outta hand, so you have to be black to work with black people? motherfuckers are gonna work with what ever is giving money, if all the cultures start complaining about having vultures that would divide groups insted of unite them. also shitty bosses come in all colors

    1. Kris Kompute says:

You are the first and only person on here to bring up race. Yet, we (black people) always pull the race card?

      1. thedeamkid19 says:

what does ‘culture’ mean? stupid motherfucker

        1. Tdawg says:

Way of life for a group of people,HIP-HOP in this case

          1. thedeamkid19 says:

… The plantation game is over my culture is smarter then that these days… -You know he aint talking about hip hop

          2. Tdawg says:

There both making $$$ but if one’s heart is smaller than his bottomline, kinda makes them a parasite right?

          3. thedeamkid19 says:

true, the world of bussiness where people dont give a fuck about what they sale. people complaining about this culture vulture is ridiculous cause they want that anybody around hip hop should be black

          4. Tdawg says:

I get what your saying but if you live for the culture or at least have respect for it, damn someone questioning your motives. Don’t get defensive!!!

          5. thedeamkid19 says:

imagine the country/rock/pop artists complaining to executives about not being part of that culture, sounds stupid right?

          6. Tdawg says:

Hip Hop punk and metal you will get called out because its a way of life. Country you might get called out, but pop is whats popping at the moment. That is a WORST example!!! Pop is here to day gone tomorrow, pop = fast and processed foods!!!

          7. thedeamkid19 says:

that calling out executives sounds more like jealousy. and pop is also a music categorie defined with its own musical rules, one thing is pop culture and other pop music

          8. Tdawg says:

Execs are accountable too. Pop=popular, fades, trends etc. etc. but we can agree to disagree

        2. Kris Kompute says:

          From Merriam-Webster:

“A culture is a way of life of a group of people–the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next.”

Here’s a link to a synopsis of a sociological study about culture conducted at Texas A&M:

          https://www.tamu.edu/faculty/choudhury/culture.html

          Nothing regarding race…stupid motherfucker.

          1. thedeamkid19 says:

instead of googling shit what you need to do is actually read what is on this page on dame dash coments: The plantation game is over my culture is smarter then that these days… retarded motherfucker

          2. Kris Kompute says:

“Plantation Game” as in one party sits in the house and makes money (record label) while the other party does all the heavy lifting (artists).

Once again, nothing specific about race.

No one has called Rick Rubin a culture vulture. Ever. Or Jimmy Iovine.

Dame is talking about getting what you deserve from a label or doing it on your own. But your institutionalized racist views blind you too much to see that.

          3. thedeamkid19 says:

ha ha your a fucking clown making up interpretations, so according to your stupid reading of his words: what does …and he still can’t get a dollar from his own culture… means? hahahaha
