DJ Khaled earned his first number one album this week with Major Key clearing 95,000 album units. According to Billboard, 59,000 were from traditional album sales. Khaled celebrated the news yesterday onboard a yacht with a bottle of Belaire champagne. Congrats!

Why everybody on here only looking at the traditional sales numbers?
95k SPS album units is better than what Gucci (68k SPS) just did, SchoolBoy Q (73k SPS) and dudes celebrated these things, you were at least happy for them.
Digital download sales for 2016 are down 24% year on year, in comparison to streaming being up 87%. Streaming is all the industry cares about so really the streaming plus sales numbers are what matter most.
Khaled’s album was only available for digital downloads on itunes and apple music for streaming.
95k SPS and 59k of that is traditional sales, sounds great for a DJ Khaled album to me. No real need to hate.
That would be true, if it was a solo album. Then the artist would still have made a reasonable profit after the label and retailers take their share and all the producers, engineers and such are paid. But her Khaled had to pay all those people and all the artists on his album. Paying producers is one thing, but after buying three Future features, a a couple verse from Jay, and solo tracks from Drake and Nas you have to wonder how long it will be until Khaled sees a profit from this album.
ANYONE COULD HAVE MADE THIS ALBUM OR A WAY BETTER ONE WITH THE BUDGET AND CONNECTS DJ KHALED HAS.
I can’t speak on exactly what the profits look like for Khaled but I would argue that they didn’t spend as much as it looks like they did on paper.
All Future features more likely free, courtesy of Epic records and the already well established relationship that he and Khaled already have. Remember Khaled did premiere Future’s album Evol on his first Beats Radio show too.
Most of these verses, are likely free and favours on the upfront side but the artists/songwriters/producers likely get great splits. So I’m not saying they aren’t getting paid but more than likely not upfront. Especially because of the promotional nature of being on Khaled’s album. Khaled has a track record of hits that can’t be denied, his collab’s are great promotional tools.
Even the Jay features, Jay had just signed on to manage Khaled, I’m almost sure he gave Khaled that shit on the strength because it is also Jay’s biggest song out of his latest releases. I Got The Keys put Jay right back in the heads of this generation of kids who listen to future.
95% of the people on the album have collaborated with Khaled in the past. It really wouldn’t be far fetched to me that they only cared about getting their share of writer credit and the royalties that go along with it. Better splits on a song can be worth way more than an upfront fee.
Honestly though, I’ve wondered for years how Khaled works out the splits for all his collaborations. I would really like to hear somebody like a DJ Clue, DJ Drama or Kayslay break down how DJ albums work out splits with artists/producers.
