Pharrell Announces Juneteenth A State Holiday In Virginia

Pharrell joined the legislation of making Juneteenth an official paid holiday in the state of Virginia.
During a news conference yesterday (June 16), Virginia Governor Ralph Northam welcomed musician and Virginia native Pharrell Williams for the reveal. Celebrated on June 19, Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when slavery was abolished.
“Every year, as a nation we mark the Fourth of July, celebrating our independence from English colonial rule—but that freedom did not include everyone. It’s time we elevate Juneteenth, not just as a celebration by and for some, but one acknowledged and commemorated by all of us”, says Northam. Williams added “This is our chance to lead, to truly embrace the importance of Juneteenth and to treat it as a celebration of freedom that Black people truly deserve”.
