The other podcasts are good for nostalgia but RR really brings out what has made these artists successful. “Rap is about yourself.” Q hits the nail on the head on the best way to be original in this copycat era.
Wyclef spoke on producers moving beyond the computer when making music, understanding the sample or an instrument. For my generation, sampling was a door to learning about all kinds of music and all the possible messages. You see how militant, positive and mind expanding previous generations were and you start to think maybe there is conspiracists dumbing the music down. Or maybe just Greed and stupid marketing execs who make decisions using twitter analytics and listen to the opinions of Oberlin College music writer “critics.”
