J.Cole Says BP3’s On Par With The Black Album

[vodpod id=Groupvideo.3647426&w=425&h=350&fv=]

Somewhere in a dark alley, J.Cole says The Blueprint 3 is on the same wavelength as The Black Album. After numerous listens, I’d agree. Still, “Change Clothes” belongs in the hamper.

Run this town got on Z100 The Yankees Have the Own Version
Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rihanna’s “Run This Town” collaboration has taken over New York radio airwaves and become the Yankees’ main anthem as they progress in the Major League Baseball post-season.

Remixed via New York station Z100, the song will now be played as the Yankees advance.
“Run This Town” has been made the theme song for the Yankee’s and revamped to say “The Yanks gonna run this town tonight.” The song was originally a spoof that was made by NY mega station Z100 but after they got massive responses to play it again, it was taken more seriously. The radio station hopes that Jay will eventually sing the song himself and help to amp up Yankee fans around the world. (Bossip)

  9. ace says:

The Black Album is the eighth studio album by American rapper Jay-Z, released November 14, 2003 on Roc-A-Fella Records. It was promoted as his final studio album, which also serves as its recurring theme,[11] although Jay-Z subsequently announced a return to solo recording in 2006. The album features a guest appearance by Pharrell (in “Change Clothes”) and Jay-Z’s mother, who speaks about his childhood in different portions of “December 4th”.
An a cappella-only version of The Black Album was also released. The Black Album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with nearly 463,000 copies sold in its first week and over 3 million to date. It received universal acclaim from most music critics, based on an aggregate score of 84/100 from Metacritic.[12

  13. ctg says:

The Black Album had 2-4 questionable songs depending on your tastes.

    “Change Clothes” (too commercial)
“Justify My Thug” (because of the production)
    “Threats” (because of the production)
“Moment of Clarity (because of the production)

The Blueprint 3 has 3-7 questionable songs.

“On to the Next One” (repetitive sample is annoying)
    “Off That” (it’s just bad)
“A Star Is Born” (pop sounding hook and backhanded compliments)
“Venus vs. Mars” (fake LL record)
“Hate” (sounds like a throwaway track, too goofy)
“Reminder” (eh, just doesn’t hit hard)
“Young Forever” (just flat out bad)

The Black Album is more cohesive and has more bangers. I like The Blueprint 3 A LOT. I think it’s Jay’s best album since The Black Album however it’s not as good as it.

  14. Young Sha says:

I’d have to disagree. on all notes. i think BP3 is sequenced right. and sonically, sounds good

  17. Dman says:

Bp3 is good but no it does not top black album

  18. RamJam says:

    Read CTG’s comments… co-sign

    Black Album > BP3…by a mile.

  19. gooch says:

Co-Sign. I’m thinking I was wrong about KC as well.

  21. Can says:

Blueprint 3 doesn’t say anything new. You know nothing more about Jay leaving out than you did coming in. I enjoy BP3 alot, but I -love- The Black Album.

Pretty much, the best thing I can say about BP3 has already been said elsewhere, in Slant Magazine: “The album is a hip-hop feast, for sure, filled to the brim with elite production and elite rapping, but it lacks the hungriness, the spirit, and the craziness that marks a classic album”. That’s pretty much it.

  22. Jamiezz says:

Black album is my favorite Jay album.. but I agree with cole saying BP3 is right below Black album. Black album I play everything. BP3 I skip about 2 tracks.. based strictly on the beats.. Swizz shit gets very annoying after a few listens. Other than that though its a solid album.

OH yeah CTG i pretty much disagree on everything except “On to the Next One” (repetitive sample is annoying) and the reminder comment. Rest of it is definately wrong..

Forever Young was such a dope outro. Would’ve been better if he did that shit on Black album if he actually did retire.. but its still a good choice for the end.

  23. Nathaniel says:

fuck all this album comparison malarkey. he said he’s been listening to the Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory for the last couple weeks heavy. oh that alone, he can say whatever he likes. that album alone, (if we really want to make comparisons) is saying more than most niggas do in their whole careers in this “walking, rapping commercials” ass mainstream these days.

    hats off to J. Cole.

  32. iCandy says:

J.Cole… slowly working my last nerve lately with these interviews… gawd.

Still checking for him but some statements make my eyes go 0_o

And the comments *hilarious* I actually read them. most of you are really just biased. Now for the truth:

    1) The Black Album is *not* a classic Jay-Z album nor a clasic HH(HipHop) album. Period.

    2) BP3 is the second worst album of Jay-Z’s catalog including the trash with R.Kelly

    3) BP3 should not have been released in it’s current state. Much of the reasons have already been stated but one has not. Jay-Z isn’t on his 1st, 2nd or 3rd album here. We expect way more cohesiveness, vision, wordplay.. If he stops growing as an artist, we respectfully ask him to just fall back because he’s fucking with a classic discography.

    4) FACT: There are always 2-4 songs on any Jay-Z album that are complete fuckery. On BP# the number doubles.

At the end of the day, even though he’s CRAZY inconsistent, distracted, too well-fed to care, Jay-Z is the best rapper RAPPING currently active and relative. Alot of rappers are alive so we can’t re-use that cliche but the currently-active-and-relative category, he is king, he is the ruler, his *shit* still has more nuggets than the best from mediocre artists.

Now back to J.Cole. Wale said Jay-Z is the best rapper EVER. Now J.Cole can’t accurately judge Jay-Z discovery. This makes me worried. Am I alone?

As of the past year, only albums I’ve bought are Jay-Z and Michael Jackson. I will keep my beans until someone has something worth hearing. Mixtapes I listen freely since they’re free but unless it’s decent I don’t keep it in rotation. When did Hip Hop die?

  33. Black London says:

Co-Sign > i think we starting to discredit american gangsta .. to me american gangsta was a dope as fuckin album .. word

American Gangsta is better than BP3….Its more cohesive than BP3. BP3 is dope but American Gangsta is better.

*yep* x2 …i’ve been noticing people smoothing over American Gangster. Kingdom Come is somewhere in the bottom of the barrel of his catalog, but uh…that American Gangster shit is dope as fuck. its like RD from a 38yr old Jay’s perspective. cohesive, and….fuck the explanation. American Gangster is dope. no complaints.

  37. mac DIESEL says:

    @ Nathaniel

YO THAT KINGDOME COME WAS DOPE!!!! NIGGAS IS SLEEPIN’ ON THAT ALBUM!!!! WASN’T BETTER THAN AMERICAN GANGSTA BUT IT WAS DOPE!!!!

  39. UNKNOWN says:

OK OK, I SEE WHAT ALL Y’ALL SAYING, AND EVERYBODY IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION BUT PEEP GAME FROM A CERTIFIED HH HEAD, AND JAY STAN

1.) FIRST OF ALL YOU CAN’T COMPARE HOV ALBUMS, YOU CAN ONLY MEASURE THEM AGAINST EACH OTHER, THEY ARE JUST WAY TOO DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER BUT THEY MAKE UP THE PUZZLE CALLED JAY-Z

2.) SECONDLY THERE IS NOT A LAME JAY-Z ALBUM TO DATE, THERE ARE SONGS THAT MAKE YOU SAY C’MON SON @ JAY BUT I REPEAT NO LAME ALBUMS.

3.) BLACK ALBUM CAN NOT BE USED AS A BENCH MARK FOR JAY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM, BECAUSE THAT COULD NEVER HAVE BEEN HIS “SWAN SONG” HE HAD TO COME BACK AFTER THAT. AND I WOULDNT PUT IT AS ONE OF HOV’S BEST EITHER.

4.) IF YOU WANNA THROW AWAY ANY PIECES TO THE PUZZLE IT WOULD BE VOL 1 AND KINGDOM COME, BUT YOU CAN’T DO THT CAUSE THEY ARE ALOT OF IMPORTANT JOINTS ON THEM BOTH, AND IF ANY OTHER ARTIST PUT THOSE OUT, Y’ALL WOULD HAVE PRAISED THE SOCKS OFF THAT MOTHERFUCKER.

5.) AMERICAN GANSTER IS A MASTERPEICE, THAT IS WHAT A ALBUM IS SPOSE TO SOUND LIKE, COHERENT , FLOWS ALONG LOGICALLY, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT WAS TIED TO A CONCEPT AND A BASIC THEME, IT BRINGS YOU BACK TO AND ERA WHILE IT STAYED CURRENT, BEAUTIFUL BEATS, ARTISTIC LYRICISM THAT VIVIDLY PAINTED THE LIFE OF A REAL AMERICAN GANGSTA, AND HIS FLOW WAS AMAZING ON THAT ALBUM. AT BEST I GIVE THAT ALBUM 4.5 MICS, AT ITS LOWEST POINT 4, BUT HELLO BROOKLYN WAS STR8 TRASH WNT FRONT, I HATE THAT SHIT, JAY DIDNT DO BROOKLYN RITE WITH THT ONE.

6.) IF YOU ASK ME WHAT MY VEIW IS ABOUT BP3, WHAT I WOLUD TELL YOU IS THAT ITS A THREE PEAT, NOT A THREE PEAT IN TERMS OF THE THIRD INSTALLMENT OF THE BLUEPRINT SERIES, BUT A THREE PEAT IN THAT IT IS THE THIRD CLASSIC OF HIS CAREER

    >RESONABLE DOUBT
    >BLUEPRINT
    >BLUPRINT 3

Y’ALL SHUD NOT WAIT TO GIVE MY HIM HIS CERTIFICATION AS A CLASSIC, CAUSE Y’ALL TOOK WAY TO LONG TO GIVE REASONABLE DOUBT CLASSIC STATUS, IF Y’ALL YOUNGNS AINT KNOW THAT SHIT WAS SLEPT ON AT FIRST. THE DIFFERENCE WITH BP3 IS THAT ITS NOT THE TYPE OF CLASSIC THAT OUR EARS ARE TRAINED TO ACCEPT, ITS THAT NEW ORGANIC TYPE OF CLASSIC THT IS MODERN AND ECLECTIC, HIS FLOW ON BP3 IS BANNANAS, PLZ JUST LISTEN.

  40. Thomas says:

    @Unknown

“IF YOU WANNA THROW AWAY ANY PIECES TO THE PUZZLE IT WOULD BE VOL 1 AND KINGDOM COME,”

    ^^^
Ummm. Vol. 1 to me is Jay’s 2nd best album. You take “I Know What Girls Like” and “Face Off” off of that album; a better video for “Sunshine” and people would say Jay had back to back classics. Vol.1 gave us “A Million and One,” “Lucky Me,” “Imaginary Player,” “Friend or Foe 98′,” “Who Ya Wit,” “You Must Love Me,” “Streets is Watching,” “Where I’m From,” “Rap Game/Crack Game,” “Real Niggaz” What track list if F’ing with that?

Kingdom Come (I’m changing my mind about this album) was sequenced incorrectly. The better songs were at the beginning of the album and should have bee spaced out. First 6 were dope middle 3-5 were meh and last 2-3 were dope.

  41. JAKKO DA WAKKOFF says:

so ambitious > Hate & Off that

  42. etam* K says:

He said best “U WANT THE OLD JAYZ,BUY MY OLD ALBUM”!!!let’s stop comparing pls!! Let the nigga grow musically u dnt hear red hot chili peppers saying damn I wish staduim arch. sound like califorcation(SORRY IF THAT iS OVER YALL CLONES HEAD,step ur music game up)!BP3is classic material by 2day standards&the black album was classic4its time.2me there aint but a handful of timeless rap album.

  43. Can says:

Young Forever just feels a re-tread of everything Jay accomplished (to much greater effect, in my opinion) musically, lyrically, and aesthetically on Beach Chair.

  44. UNKNOWN says:

^^^^^ can homie i expressed those same sentiments, but dnt discount how dope beach chair is, but forever young is beach chair done way better, beach chair went over ppls head, including mine i wnt front, i had to make my own interpretation of that record, to get it.

@thomas i also agree thats why i said they can’t be thrown away to much important joints on there. but if you were to pic some Jay albums to throw away, those would have to be the two in the trash. but that wont happen

  45. UNKNOWN says:

@ jakko stop wacking off, so ambitious you can tell pharell already had that laid out , hook and all, but Jay made it his own, didnt youhear the part when that motherfucker said what the nay sayers say are like kicks and he is insearch of them like a sneaker head just to fuel his drive, and he’s gonna take ll those kicks until he reaches the edge, and take a leap of faith and watch his eagle wings spread- u gotta be kidding me, thats dope material.

HATE IS CRAZY my nigga,” i cnt even stomach my self- ulcer” thats ill

off that kinda annoying but if you listen its dope, what he says u gotta understand its where Jay is in his life right now, and i cnt beleive Timbaland wanted Drake to ryhme on that beat, what is Drake gonna say off that to, he’s just coming in the game, his voice was great for the hook and thats that.

  46. Hoffa193 says:
