Andre Harrell Passes Away
The beat goes on.
Music mogul and founder of the influential R&B and Hip Hop record label Uptown Records, Andre Harrell passed away on Friday (May 8). He was 59.
DJ DNice broke the tragic news on his Instagram Live and it has since been confirmed. Andre’s ex-wife Wendy Credle says he passed due to heart failure and had heart problems for quite some time.
Born in Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Harrell’s music career began as one half of the ‘80s rap duo Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Alonzo Brown. After his tenure as Vice President at Def Jam under Russell Simmons, Andre soon founded his own label, Uptown Records.
Playing a key role on introducing the New Jack Swing genre, Andre helped introduce the acts Heavy D & The Boyz, Al B Sure, Guy, Jodeci, and Mary J. Blige. Harrell also took Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs under his wing, who eventually parted ways and created his own, Bad Boy Records.
Keeping a close friendship ever since, Harrell helped Diddy launch the music television and multi-platform brand, REVOLT. Here, Harrell took the role as vice chairman and help created the annual REVOLT Hip Hop Summit.
Last year, Harrell announced that he was working with BET on a scripted miniseries on Uptown Records. Listen to his Rap Radar Podcast appearance here.
